Very strange coaching indeed. Almqvist is a fine PP specialist but replacing him on the PP with Donovan instead of Dahlin at midseason is a decision I will never understand.

I saw perhaps 20-ish Frölunda games this last season and I thought they were garbage for long stretches. Granted, they had numerous injuries and no-one knew if Lias was in or out flying back and forth over the Atlantic.

It was a dysfunctional team with mediocre goal-tending (at best). It was perplexing to watch .. when Rasmus was on ice he was many times their best player. I felt they did not deserve him in their team.

But on the topic of Dahlin and the pressure. Dahlin couldn't go to a more friendly place when it comes to pressure on their top picks. The media, even with the major sources consolidating are a bunch of pushovers, who usually get their news from other outlets. I can probably guess Dahlin puts more pressure on himself than he will get from anybody in Buffalo.

I wouldn’t say no way, it depends if he plays on PP1 with Eichel-Risto-Reinhart-ROR or not. They were number 1 2 years ago sucked last year and are due for a bounce back. If he can put together 15-20 PP points he could be in the mid 40s easily. Otherwise I could see 30s

Agreed. A large part of it depends on if they give him PP1 time or not. Hedman didn't get to play on PP1 until 5 years into his career and his stats reflect that. I don't think its a given Dahlin plays on PP1 since Risto is actually a pretty good PP quarterback. Even the 30 range would be a huge improvement over what we've had, the last time we had 2 defensemen with 30+ points was back in 2010.

His hands are just insane, not just for a Dman either. They are some of the best hands I’ve seen.

The way he handles the puck and can move laterally is just incredible, it’s Datsyuk like.

Don't know about that, a minimum of 40 points is asking a lot from a rookie defenseman, especially on the 18/19 Sabres.

Doughty had 27 and Hedman had 20 in their first seasons.

From every account I've heard, analysts and scouts alike agreed that Dahlin would have gone first overall this year even if he entered the draft as a forward. Obviously, defense is a different position to be playing as an 18 year entering the highest league in the world, but you see what I'm saying, right? The consensus #1 pick in a draft, regardless of whether he play D or F. That's some high praise, and it says volumes about his skillset and toolbox.

I should rephrase what I said earlier, and instead of saying slightly disappointed, I'll switch to slightly underwhelming. Points aren't the be-all-end-all, so if he gets high 20s/mid 30s or so and shows that he can dominate at times and prove that he's worthy of the #1 OA in his first year, then I'd consider that a great first year. But...less than 20 points for a kid with that kind of talent? I wouldn't be super thrilled.

Regardless, his rookie season isn't going to define his career so really this is just a fun exercise in wasting time farting around on here

I belive he will have a rough first year and then takeoff. Swedes dont usally cope with big hype well. I think i he will work on the defensive play first, get a feel for the much faster and harder game. I want him to do good but not get my hope up before this first season. He can get 17 points and still play realy good D. But i want to be wrong with about 50-60 points...

That's actually one of the things I'm least concerned about with this kid. He entered a pro league at 16-17yo and thrived. Has been on some of the biggest stages and thrived. He loves it.

Mentally, he's ready. We'll see if he's physically there yet though.

If you seriously think a guy would be drafted 1st overall to play a different position, I don't know what to say. I would say the same thing if it was said about a Leafs player. Like when a national writer said Eichel wasn't fit to tie Matthews skates pre-draft lottery.

Dahlin played center until he was 13, when he switched to D. 3 years later, he was playing for Frolunda in a men's league... as a defenseman.

Yep thats right , my bad, Sundin is so much Toronto that it slipped my mind. He was just talking about how much he felt the pressure and he was not prepared for it.

Thats great , dont think the kid needs more pressure then he puts on himself. Its good to push yourself but not pressure, it can make you drop the intuition level a lot, and make you overthink stuff. Im exited to see how he will manage.

Kid's hands might be better than Eichel and Mittelstadt. And he's a defenseman. The skill level is just insane.
