Some of you're absolutely embarrassing. There is no sencerity in anything you post. You just spew absolute garbage to hate on a team you dislike or more garbage to defend poor moves your favorite team make's. I don't understand that type of mentality whatsoever. I'm going to asume the majority who do this are under 16 so some advice. It won't take you far in life. I was happy to say I thought the Matthews contract was horrific and the Leafs are my team. If you're spewing that either of the numbers reported for the last 2 signing are bad you're just being a disingenuous troll.

Some Marlies will fill those roles. Maybe Brown goes and remaining cap + Browns cap signs a 2nd pairing D.

Maybe there is a big trade in the works that adds someone. Who knows. Point is, the Leafs shouldn't have that much worse of a roster than last year. Basically they lose Gardiner and Hainsey

Well said

I swear when people say "how are the Leafs going to fill certain holes" they actually forget that we draft and develop well, and have great farm teams.........to bring players UP!?

Just mind boggling

Pretty simple. All our prospects are busts and if they are not they deserve 11M

This is going to be a beautiful contract. He’s going to be playing with either Matthews or Tavares for the duration so I think he’ll produce like a 5M player at least.

Gonna be a great bang for buck contract. Very tradeable asset to flip for help elsewhere down the line too.

Some of you are just unbearable. All we hear is how all the Leafs key young RFAs are getting offersheeted, and even when the Leafs sign two (or close to) to good deals they still get flak for the order in which it's done. It's impossible to win. Give it up.

I still think Leafs would be wise to move Marner for defenseman or two on good deals (ahem, Pesce).

Yes Marner is good, but Nylanders metrics are even better and Leafs could get such a strong return for Marner if they move him now.

I know everyone is bedazzled by 94 points, but long-term a Pesce like deal (would be Pesce and more) will help Leafs in postseason play where dense and goaltending are so important

Just my 2c

Leafs cap availability is pretty funny. I did the math to see how it would play out.

Upper limit (Per Capfriendly) 81,500,000.00
Less:
Currently used 16 spots (67,959,699.00)
Projected cap space 13,540,301.00
Less:
Johnson (3,400,000.00)
Kapanen (3,250,000.00)
Projected 18/23 spots 6,890,301.00
11F / 5D / 2G
Ennis (750,000.00)
Borgman (700,000.00)
Rosen (750,000.00)
Marincin (800,000.00)
Projected 22/23 spots
12F / 8D / 2G 3,890,301.00
Assuming the 13th F is Marner
13F / 8D / 2G - 23/23
You have 3.89M left to sign Marner. So trades
must happen before he can sign.
Remove Zaitsev 4,500,000.00
Replacement: Liljegren (863,333.00)
Post Zaitsev cap available 7,526,968.00
Remove Brown 2,100,000.00
Replacement: Bracco (842,500.00)
Post Z + Brown cap avail. 8,784,468.00
Next in line at that point then becomes Kadri
Remove Kadri 4,500,000.00
Replacement: Brooks? (759,167.00)
Post Z + B + Kadri cap avail. 12,525,301.00
Marner cap estimate (11,500,000.00)
Cap flexibility 1,025,301.00
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
So assuming those trades (Brown, Zaitsev, and Kadri) because otherwise, the Leafs don't have enough cap space under any other scenario to sign Marner, it's pretty safe to say that the Leafs are not going to make the playoffs next year. That 1M in cap flexibility can be used at this point to keep for later in the season at the TDL (more cumulated space) or to upgrade on one of the replacement level players (say with signatures around the 1M mark.)

The 18/19 Leafs were 4 points out of not making the playoffs, and next year's roster will include 4 prospects/AHLer level players on their blueline, they no longer have the "3 headed monster" down the middle, and are weakening their overall forward group depth/strength.

My guess is they do not make the playoffs in 19/20.

My guess is you don't realize Nathan Hortons contract will be on the LTIR.

Good effort though!

Even then, you remove the trade of Kadri from the equation, maybe Connor Brown depending on the definitive Marner AAV. That still means an overall decline in the quality of their defensive group, and in the depth of their forward group.

At best it keeps them as a bubble team to make the playoffs.

Oh so you mean the Leafs are NOT in "cap hell" and having to move a bunch of their young roster players to make room for Marner?

Just one trade of a super late 1st, and soon, the trading of Zaitsev, and all that "cap hell" disappears?

Hmmm.........but we were told otherwise.

:)

Nope, all you have to do is lose 3 players that played in your top 4 last year and replace them with players at the league minimum. Seems like a solid strategy..

I just can’t get over how much effort you put into calculating all that and didn’t even put Horton on LTIR. What do you have to say for yourself about that, aside from trying to pretend like you have any clue how to navigate this cap situation?

This is a minor tweak. This "effort" took me 3-4 minutes. I can easily update it for you if you'd like, but that doesn't change the underlying reality of the crunch they are in.

LOL. Are you really suggesting that losing Gardiner, Zaitsev and Hainsey will be bad for us in any way/shape/form? Really? :D

He should fire his agent immediately. RFA compensation for that contract is a second rounder. How do you not at least wait to see if the phone rings?

Gives them roughly 2.58M to ice players at 1M AAV rather than AHLers. still means the overall quality of the roster will dip. (Above calculation has 13 of the 23 players being sub-million dollar players.)

At best the Leafs can "improve" one of their 5 sub-million dollar AAV defensemen to a 3.5M defenseman.

Depend on the replacement pieces for sure. Dubas has a lot of work to do to make that defense contender-level (especially with Dermott injury), but he certainly can make a big move in the next few days. The defense looks horrendous right now.

I expect:

1) Zaitsev out for no $ back (will cost a few assets (2nd + 3rd +?) but I think he'll manage
2) Get a top RHD that is not too expansive (feel like Faulk is a better bet than Miller because Vegas is cap strapped as well... Could be a 3-way trade though) in exchange for a winger (Kapanen or Johnsson in a sign and trade?) or Kadri.
3) Dump Brown for whatever he can (6th or 7th or C prospect)
4) Sign Hainsey back for cheap

You may have missed it, would be a extra 5.3 mil to spend.
