Unmotivated Semin might be in the KHL in a year and Hejduk retired. Two short-term assets for Callaghan (3-year), Bourque (5-year) and a prospect who has two years left, then RFA,
A classic CUP RUN now vs. longer term value trade. And yet, Minni could potentially win in the short term too, especially in the Caps deal with their cap tightness by trading Semin to a poor team.
Semin and Hejduk had a combined 110 points (in 136 games) last season while Callahan-Bourque had 98 (in 140 games). That's similar. But even if Semin and Hejduk leave the NHL players like Callahan and Bourque won't be to hard to replace in free agency.

Calahan-Bourque: getting about 100 points by the two players (48 in 60 games, 50 in 80) making a combined 7.6 million (4.275 + 3.33) with potential improvement too is nothing to scoff at!
In contrast, Semin's 6.7 1-year then INCREASE salary for 54 points in 65 games and potential upside of 80ish points, ensures he will go in free agency to the team that overpays for him. Hejduk's 56 points in 71 in not at all better than Callahan or Bourque's as a projection of the coming season.
Yes, Semin is the potential star performer and the most talented in the trade. But, at best, this trade adds 20ish points to the team getting Semin while losing both acquired players in free agency, while two good, possibly improving mid-career guys (26 and 29 year old) who are scoring liners under decent, noninflated longer term contracts.
Minnesota wins the deal for sure imo. Of course, if the Wild come up a few points short in the standings this coming season, the difference might be the Semin trade!
And he probably wants to turn that 6ish salary into a 10ish mill long term fat payday in next summer's free agency, an incentive for him to have a career year. His passion and commitment have been questioned, but maybe the money motive will light a fire under him.Well you probably are right, but I'm a big Semin fan and IMO Bradley's recent comments might spark Semin to have a fantastic year, he surely has the talent to be up there with the best in the game.

He could potentially hit 100 points. Not many players have that kind of potential.

D Jake Gardiner
D Matthias Ekholm
2013 3d round pick
The Colorado Avalanche are very happy to announce this deal. We've had our eyes on Gardiner for a while now. We believe he has top four-PPQB potential. He could be in the NHL as soon as 2012.
Ekholm is a great prospect. He is coming off an excellent season in the SEL, being crowned as the rookie of the year. It was very tough to give him up.
We thank refree for the easy negotiations.
DETROIT here, lookin to unload Brodeur for a First rounder
