The more I think about it, the more Buff +9 makes sense to Florida, but may not for the Jets.
They would have him for 2 more years, on the back end. If they don't re-sign him, he becomes a rental where he might fetch a player, prospect and pick. That's good return for Florida to move from #1 to #9, especially if they still get a guy they like at #9 in Ehlers or Nylander. Buff would immediately improve their team next year. That may be appealing.
For Jets, they would have to really like a guy at #1, and feel Buff would either walk after 2 yrs or doesn't fit their organization moving forward. Neither seems to be apparent at the moment. If they feel the guy at #1 can be a quality player for next decade for them, much more so than whomever they would take at 9, then it may make sense to them too. Just don't know if the guy at #1 will be that franchise changing guy.
