It's hard to say if he's better than Smith, Staal or Skjei, but a case can be made that he is better.

If you consider Trouba's market value at $8m, I have a bridge to sell you.

It's not about whether or not he's better. Those 3 were already under contract. They aren't sitting a guy getting paid 5m a year.

And Trouba's contract is definitely market value. I'm not saying I am happy with the contract, but he signed at a lower CH% (9.82) than Hedman (10.79), Weber (13.1), Suter (12.56) Letang (11.28), Pietrangelo, Ekblad* (10.27), Pietrangelo (10.11) and in the range of Burns (9.63), Vlasic (9.33), Giordano (9.25).

8m a year for a top-pair defenseman who puts up 30+ points per full season for 3 years is absolutely fair value. Trouba had just 1 RFA year left unlike guys like Parayko and Dumba who someone else used as a (wrong) comparison.

*And Ekblad had 4(!) RFA years in that deal

The problem was and is Fox and ADA are better served offensively. $8M for a defenseman not leading the PP. He was suppose to be that guy but then got leapfrogged.

$8M is fine if hes putting up 50pts. He wont get that with those two here.

Yes, and nobody will deny that his first season with the Rangers was disappointing. On the bright side, he was a lot better after he was released from the anchor called Brady Skjei. It still doesn't make the contract bloated. It's market value for what he brought up to the point of negotiations

It's much riskier holding on to him than getting rid of him, if possible. And if his contract is appropriate then it should be possible. Then replace him with someone who fits financially and can help stabilize the group. A Kevin Klein type. Ian Cole, Joel Edmundson, etc.

Trouba needs to play better in the upcoming seasons. He hasn't been worth the contract given to him let alone the additional assets we gave up for him.

I think too often fans look at what Trouba isn't, not what he is. And while he might leave you wanting more, he's still a very good and effective player who fills an important need on this team.

He's a bit like Kreider that way.

A 1st and Hollander = a lot to give up
A 1st and Pionk = not a lot to give up

Trouba is for sure overpaid to be a defenseman he clearly is not, but to cry over a late first rounder (in a draft where we had 2OA!) and *checks notes* Neal f***ing Pionk? That’s laughable.

Cool. Next topic, then?
It was in comparison to Kapanen. But if it's true that nobody would take him on his own for no return there is still packaging him with assets or taking back negative value or eating some of the contract.

So let's keep the discussion going!

What cap hit? When we traded for Trouba he was RFA. You're comparing the two trades. You should look at the situation on the day those trades were made then
A player's contract status is inherent to the player's value. So yes, we traded for Trouba who we intended to throw a monster contract at. That was the trade.

This thread is legit clown worthy.

There isn't a dman in the league that's going to do anything in a system that gives up the neutral zone and invites high percentage SOG by DESIGN!

How about we have an actual system in place for the defense to play in?

SMFH...

The two rooks beg to differ.
