Solid and above average but not elite. His career 5v5 sv% is VERY comparable to Halak, Price, Howard, Reimer, Crawford, and Bryzgalov (which should identify for you how Price is not elite either, but that's a whole different can of worms)...

I HATE. The Habs but Price is absolutely Elite

Not enough consistency or enough of a track record of excellence yet.

At this point I'd say he's very good, but not elite.

Save percentage over this year and last, bernier's first two years as a starting goalie.

minimum 48gms played (i.e. starters)

1. C.Price: 83gms, .925sv%
2. T.Rask: 79gms, .925sv%
3. S.Varlamov: 78gms, .924sv%
4. B.Bishop: 87gms, .922sv%
5. J.Bernier: 76gms, .921sv%
6. S.Bobrovsky: 76gms, .921sv%
7. J.Quick: 71gms, .921sv%
8. J.Halak: 71gms, .921sv%
9. R.Luongo: 77gms, .920sv%
10. C.Crawford: 77gms, .919sv%
11. C.Schneider: 72gms, .919sv%
12. F.Anderson: 52gms, .919sv%
13. M.Fleury: 85gms, .918sv%
14. P.Rinne: 48gms, .918sv%
15. H.Lundqvist: 83gms, .917sv%
16. S.Mason: 80gms, .917sv%
17. R.Miller: 81gms, .915sv%
18. C.Anderson: 70gms, .915sv%
19. B.Holtby: 70gms, .915sv%
20. K.Lehtonen: 88gms, .914sv%
21. A.Niemi: 85gms, .913sv%
22. J.Howard: 74gms, .913sv%
23. J.Hiller: 67gms, .912sv%
24. B.Scrivens: 60gms, .911sv%
25. M.Smith: 83gms, .910sv%
26. O.Pavelec: 79gms, .904sv%
27. C.Ward: 49gms, .902sv%

so if bernier's not elite yet, he's getting pretty close.

then again, you have to notice how close they all are. all but five teams have a goalie starting full time the last two years with a save percentage between .910 and .925. average goalie is around .917.

If he's talking about starting goalies, that's not that laughable.

If you say 30 startinh goalies, mediocre would be 15th, give or take a few, right? We will say 12 to 18th?

If you say 3 elite goalies in the league, as was stated, the halfway point of 3 and 12 is 7.5. Saying he's closer to mediocre could mean outside the top 7. Top ten goalie could still be closer to mediocre.

Not an outrageous statement.he's clearly a couple of tiers below elite at this point.

He's a Leaf, so that means he's not elite. Everybody knows that the Leafs aren't allowed to have elite players.

Well according to Leaf fans Gardiner = future Norris trophy winner, Tyler Bozak = Tavares, Reimer = Optimus Reim top 10 goaltender, Kessel >>> Kane etc etc

To me, to be in the elite, you have to have gone "God mode" in the playoffs. Lundqvist, Quick and Price do that.

Bernier can be considered elite when he has a monstrous showing in the playoffs.

pretty much the same thing for me - which is why I consider rask quite overrated. he doesn't belong in a top 3 goalies list.

Also, bernier is pretty good. i'd say hes in ''pretty good'' tier right now. not elite yet.

Just as all Canucks fans think President's Trophy = Stanley Cup Kassian = Next Lucic Luongo = Elite goalie Schneider = elite goalie Lack = elite goalie Miller = elite goalie

Why do people generalize fanbases, including leaf fans on this one. Newsflash, every fan base thinks of their players in a more positive light in comparison to other team's players. And FYI Kessel is > Kane :sarcasm: But seriously. Nobody on the Leaf boards says these things so stop making yourself look bad by lying.

Neither of those are remotely true.

It does seem to be the way things are perceived though.

That being said, is Bernier elite? Not enough of a track record. Has he provided well above average goaltending for 150 games? Absolutely. Every goaltender is capable of pulling off good games or even good stretches in a season. Ask this question again in a year and there may be some traction.

Question for non leafs fans. When your team is playing the leafs what do you fear most?

If that answer is more often than not the goalie. Then there is a stronger case for elite. Luongo Miller Price Rask Rinne Brodeur... These are or were guys that single handedly change a games.

Your own logic is flaweed and Rinne wasn't close to being elite last year.

You....You do realize how serious his injury issues were....right?

Rinne was nominated for a Vezina in 2011 and then 2012....and he'll likely add a 3rd to that this season. Rinne is the definition of elite.

As for the question of the thread. No. There's only a few elite goalies in the league. Legit number 1? Yes. Great? Sure.

Needs time to be elite though and whether he'll get there or not is anybody's guess.
