This isn't about whether Buffalo or Medicine Hat or whatnot is or isn't a crappy town, it's about a 18 y.o. cali kid having a snotty attitude towards where he earns his living, or where he plays for his country. I'd love it to find out one day in the future that the Ducks traded his pretentious ass to the Sabres. After spending four full years in Medicine Hat, of course. And life certainly often has that sense of humour.

Again, you could say this about any city in the U.S or Canada. Buffalo is nothing special, just another city and there's nothing wrong with that.

True but I hate Buffalo getting a ****** reputation from people who know nothing about the city. Also not true because few cities in this country have the art and music scene that Buffalo does. You can say a lot of things about a lot of cities but unless you live here, you have no idea what it has to offer.

I hear certain areas of Malmo are somewhat unwelcoming to a native Swede. How about the banlieues of Paris? Wander from the train station in Marseilles down to the old port; I suggest a daytime stroll.

European cities have scary, impoverished areas. They just happen to be in the near suburbs, not the picturesque city centers frequented by tourists. In many American cities the opposite is true.

Take the blinders off.

I know about France, not disagreeing with you, just explaining why European players attending the WJC might be reacting in a rather bad way about Buffalo.

The European kids taking part are obviously not used to the difference and that's why the react that way about Buffalo and I did about downtown Atlanta and Memphis.

Shouldn't downtown were tourists hang out feel safe though? We tried to walk to Martin Luther King's house in Atlanta by foot since it was such a short walk but it was so scary that we waited 30 minutes for a bus to take us back instead of walking back.

Norway and Switzerland don't have what I'd call poor impoverished areas though, they just really don't.

That "Buffalo is a ****hole" quote was from a Finnish reporter. You guys have to understand, there are no actual ghettos or slum areas in Finland. It's probably just a culture shock thing more than anything.

Man, show a little respect to the people putting on the tournament. This ******** that you "can't speak your mind" is so friggen' stupid. You can speak your mind, but you don't have to be a complete ******* about it. It is called being a ****ing adult.

If that Swede is scared of "one exit wrong from highway" I'd hate to see what would have happened had the tournament actually been somewhere scary. I have lived all over the East Coast in various larger cities, and while I won't argue what there is to do, Buffalo is far from scary.

I do have to say the Swedes comments strike me as incredibly racist and ignorant.

LOL

maybe the swedes are scared of black people

In case you didn't know, the paragraph in English was said by a Finnish journalist.

Anyway, if you really want a dirty, scary place I believe Naples fills those criteria.

lol so people are ignorant for calling buffalo a waste land and the responses are that it pretty much is unless you go into the suburbs or drive all over the place to find the odd good spot? talk about grasping for straws. another response was it has a good bar scene. again, hillarious. a bunch of 18 yr olds at the tournament of their lives aren't going to be club hopping all night, so you've essentialy proved all their comments to be true.

it's one thing to stand up for your city but some of you just sound ridiculous. are you really that dense that you can't see why someone coming from a large city with tons of action would consider buffalo a ghost town?

buffallo is a ****hole no matter how you want to slice it. i don't even like driving through it let alone having to stay there for a week.

How are they racist? And didn't someone from Sweden say that it wasn't even their comments?

edit. apparently a Finnish journalist said it so it turns out you were ignorant :P

If that's the cities big 'grab' video... I can understand these quotes.

Sure, for you people who live there and grew up there, you enjoy it and there are things to do - but for a visitor, it doesn't seem like there is much to do. Thus, the reputation it has gained over time. It isn't a destination.

Sorry, not enough water parks or circuses for your dim mind? Too much world class architecture and too many great art galleries that your brain can't handle? Sorry, we'll get to building more places where there are guys dressed in mickey mouse costumes walking around.:shakehead

This is exactly why the typical tourist is a complete idiot. They are looking for cheap exhibits with bright flashy lights and roller coasters. As far as i'm concerned they can stay out of here.

Take a look at what numerous writers for various magazines and newspapers have said: http://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/visitors/stories/saying.asp

Most hockey fans have A.D.D. Let's build a slide off the Skyway to keep them entertained. Better yet a bus tour that drops them off at the corner of Walden and Goodyear.

Yeah cause they are socialist countries, that tax you out of your a$$, and then give it to the poor people. That sh*% does not work in the long run, i.e. look at Greece, Ireland, and Germany and all their debt.

Downtown Buffalo is a joke. no one likes going down there, save for bar hoppers hitting Chippawa or events at Sheas or HSBC arena. Even the hotels down there are abysmal. The 33 (the highway from the airport) doesn't help either. It's goes right through the worst areas of the city.

I understand the outsiders point of view. You get stuck downtown in a hotel and you're thinking "WTF is there to do here?" Once 5-6 pm rolls around everyone is heading home for the downtown offices and the place goes silent.

Most of what is great about this area is spread out all over the frigging place. Our biggest mall is in Cheektowaga, our Football stadium is in Hamburg, our major Colleges are in Amherst and North Buffalo. nothing about this city is compacted. It's all spread out throughout the region.

I had a friend from Connecticut visit once and we took him around town and he had a great time. The one thing he mentioned at the end of that few days is that he found it amusing that when we told him where we were going and he asked how long will it take we always said "About a half hour"

My opinion is the kid has a right to his opinion. As western new yorkers we should be berating the elected officials of this region instead of railing against outsiders speaking their mind. We should be attacking the cause of the issue not the effect.

And to be honest Denmark and Sweden are nothing special. Visited my cousin in Sonderborg Denmark and it was a ****hole. The stinch of manure from the fields weren't pleasant, either.

This is OT and you don't have a clue of what you're talking about.

Every large country in the world has economically challenged areas. The U.S. Has a population of over 300,000,000 people. There is no way given the sheer size of the country and population numbers that every city or large population center could look pristine.
