As long as he's prepared to play on the 3rd line for a significant discount from his last contract, I have no problem with this.

On the Canucks he'd slot in perfectly as the third pairing right hand shot guy.
If he's paid $1.5MM or less then i guess it makes sense. He's a natural right-side guy too which is what we need after losing Tanev.
If he signs for $1MM, then i think i'd rather have him than Tanev considering their respective costs.

Hughes & Schmidt
Edler & Myers
Juolevi/Benn & Hamonic

Alternatively, I actually wouldn't mind the Canucks going after Vatanen instead. Completely different player but I think he'd help the 2nd PP unit enough to justify his presence on the third pairing

I am shocked Vatanen is still out there.

Getting a good forward back for Hanifin would work too. Could be a good way to improve the team

If the plan is to use the cap space to sign Hoffman is there even room for another forward? We probably aren't getting a #1 centre in any deal. Do the Flames need more 2-3 line wingers? A top 9 of:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Hoffman
Tkachuk-Backlund-Lindholm
Dube-Bennett-Mangiapane

Who are we bringing in that's bumps any of those guys down? Potentially Bennett, but I think the plan is to give him more time and hope he can keep his playoff game this regular season.

The purpose of the Hanifin deal is to clear space for Hoffman.

The only way I can see that working is if we aren't signing Hoffman at all, and Hanifin is being traded for the upgraded winger.

Agreed. Like I said, Calgary's top 9 already has lots of depth. So the player coming back has to be a legit first liner. Someone better than Mangiapane. Even then, I think the plan is to give Mangiapane top 6 time, so there may not be room for any forwards in Calgary.

Honestly, unless a Hoffman level player is being acquired, it makes more sense to just hang onto Hanifin. Giordano is getting older. The Flames will likely lose someone to the expansion draft.

It also looks like the Hamonic tweet was deleted, so he likely is not returning to Calgary.

I am shocked Vatanen is still out there.

Going into free agency, it seemed like the middle class guys might get squeezed out with the flat cap / teams not spending as much given the drop in revenue. There's only about ten teams with 4 mil in cap space and a good chunk of those teams have unsigned RFAs and/or don't have the green light to spend.

Vatanen probably went from thinking he'd get a multiyear deal at close to the AAV of his previous deal to perhaps having to take a significant pay cut on a short term deal. He and his agent might just be being patient to see if any additional openings pop up due to injuries/etc rather than rushing. Or like Hoffman, maybe Vatanen has the framework of a deal in place with somebody contingent on that team clearing cap space?

I wouldn't mind Hammer back on a 900k/1M deal.
He can't play up the lineup at all, but a guy to spot in every couple games as your 5/6 with that grit and leadership is fine.

Not sure there's much money out there for him these days to be honest. Bad regular season and then skipped the playoffs (for valid reasons, but still).

I'm not.
He's in that group of:
"I'm too good to be earning 900k a year, but I'm also not good enough to merit 5m like I would any other season in a flat cap."

Options are limited where he could go that would pay close to what he's worth.

Long Island was too far from home for him. Hopefully his family issues have been resolved.
Will always love Hammer.

I doubt there's many (if any) direct flights from NYC to Winnipeg though. Where as Vancouver and Calgary will have multiple flights daily.

That top line would possibly be the worst line defensively in the league. Regular season sure but come playoff time? Yikes.

Friedman is talking about it on 960, but sounds like Vancouver is the main interest in the equation.

Will always love Hammer.
Van to WPG is like a 3 hour flight with no hassles at airports. Easy to get direct flights. Also I read the Jets may not play at home this year due to restrictions, unless they are lifted by season opening.

My question is... who would take Hanifin's spot if he's traded to make cap space room for a Hoffman signing? Personally I think its expecting a lot to have a player with 24 NHL games under his belt slide into the left side of the 2nd line.

Probably better off swapping Lindholm and Hoffman.
