Wonder why Detroit doesn’t get in on this.

Hamonic is from Manitoba. He's stated multiple times that he wants to play close to home. He also has several family members with heath issues. He's clearly a small town guy.

For a little more background, Hamonic grew up on a farm, and his father passed away when he was 10. Since then, he took over a father type role in his family and strongly values time with his family. He refused to play in the bubble, as he did not want to risk getting his family sick. He doesn't seem to care about money or glory. He's also very active in local first nations advocacy and youth groups.

Detroit, a very urban US city, is probably the last place he wants to sign. Because he's willing to take a discount to sign in a Western Canadian city, does not mean any team can just sign him for cheap.

Why not play in Winnipeg for like 1 million. He's better than Forbort or Beaulieu.

Vancouver could sure use him, and it would make some sense if Calgary is actually shopping Hanifin

If Calgary is the team rumoured to be signing Hoffman that makes sense. Have a top 4 of:

Tanev, Giordano, Valimaki, and Anderson, with Hamonic as an extra to provide steadiness and support. Clear cap space with a Hanifin trade and then sign Hoffman. Overall, Calgary is a much improved team.

I haven't been a fan of Hamonic's days as a Flame, but I guess I'd keep him if he's affordable, I'm also surprised he's not signing in Winnipeg.
He'd be a decent mentor for the young Flames D corps, but I don't want him here long term. 1 year $1 million, sure why not.

Getting a good forward back for Hanifin would work too. Could be a good way to improve the team

Why not Winnipeg tho

Looking at it from afar, Winnipeg has Pionk/Demelo/Poolman signed on the right side and have 7D on one way deals. They're over the cap (with Jack Roslovic to sign) but will be compliant once Bryan Little goes on LTIR. Might be a mix of budget/fit as the reason Winnipeg isn't in play.

Vancouver has cap issues but the fit would make a little more sense with Tyler Myers being the only RHD (Nate Schmidt probably playing the right side as a lefty). Calgary has Tanev/Andersson as RHD, so Hamonic could slot in there.
