Looking at it from afar, Winnipeg has Pionk/Demelo/Poolman signed on the right side and have 7D on one way deals. They're over the cap (with Jack Roslovic to sign) but will be compliant once Bryan Little goes on LTIR. Might be a mix of budget/fit as the reason Winnipeg isn't in play.

Vancouver has cap issues but the fit would make a little more sense with Tyler Myers being the only RHD (Nate Schmidt probably playing the right side as a lefty). Calgary has Tanev/Andersson as RHD, so Hamonic could slot in there.

-----

Also, original tweet seems to have been deleted. Was the source valid?

I have no idea why Hamonic didn't sign in Winnipeg... Winnipeg badly needed Dman with size and Hamonic wanted to play close to home.

I guess with Samberg and Forbort Winnipeg doesn't need size that much right now but still

I think he loves hockey. Despite the fact the game is passing him by, due to his lack of foot speed, I think he genuinely enjoys getting out there and mucking it up.

No doubt he loves hockey. But this....

“Playing in the NHL is a privilege and I take a lot of pride in doing so for an incredible franchise like the Calgary Flames. Most importantly, God allowed my family the opportunity to see his love and grace first-hand last year when our little girl contracted a very serious respiratory virus. Like every parent, everything we do is to provide and protect our kids and try to take away any suffering they may endure. Last year we spent the longest, scariest and hardest week of our lives by our daughter’s hospital bedside. We were unsure of what would come next, but with God’s strength our little girl fought her respiratory virus and recovered. During that long week, we were helpless and couldn’t do anything to help her except hold her little hands, kiss her head and pray. We saw what a respiratory virus can do to our healthy little girl and it’s something no parent wants or should have to go through. Now blessed with our second child, a baby boy, the risk of today’s COVID-19 pandemic is a very difficult one to weigh as parents.
“Due to what my daughter already has gone through and the concerns if she were to catch COVID-19, I’ve decided to opt out and seek a leave of absence from the Calgary Flames for the remainder of the playoffs.

Still not sure why Hammer and Winnipeg can't get something figured out. Seems like an obvious fit. I think I would rather not see him back with the Flames but if the price is right for one year I won't be chafed too badly.

I really hope that if he comes to Calgary it is with Kylington established as the player in front of him. Feel like if this is in support of a Hanifin move that would be a terrible move from Calgary, since Hamonic could be seen as the player holding Hanifin back for as long as they played together last season. Feels like getting Hamonic as a depth defensemen is where I'm comfortable, last year it felt like his pairing was consistently the worst on the ice imo.

I think the bigger issue with Hamonic which may make me and some other Flames fans biased against him is that he came in for the same package that Hamilton did, and was on our worst pairing for much of this year with Hanifin showing potential whenever away from him. We paid a high price to bring him in and he was played well above where he should've been in the lineup despite Andersson, who was better, being right behind him, and the analytics of his pairing with Hanifin were just awful. I'm sure he'd be fine as a bottom pairing option on most teams but the flames have young d-men he would block if he played every day, and his past history with Calgary is uninspiring to say the least.

It looks like it was from TSN1040. Weird that they removed it.

It looks like it was TSN1040 radio host Bob Marjanovich speculating what he had heard: https://post.futurimedia.com/ckstam/playlist/10/listen-28683.html?cb=1607973184.980421

Seems like they touched a number of topics over the 45+ minute podcast. The blip about Hamonic starts around 26 minutes in.

Edit: Here's a rough transcription -

Bob Marjanovich said:
One of things I've heard over the weekend is Travis Green is really making a case to management to try to get another defenseman. The guy that he would like to come to Vancouver is Travis Hamonic.

(talks about Vancouver's cap issues)

I'm hearing that Calgary and Vancouver are in on Hamonic. And whoever can clear enough space will probably get Hamonic on a one year deal.

That was the main part, Marjanovich also mentions that he's heard that Vancouver ownership is perhaps privately backing off previous public statements about spending to the cap. So that could be an issue with additional signings. He notes that fitting Hamonic might be contingent on whether the team can put Micheal Ferland on LTIR.

Just in general, I always caution about using radio interviews as sources since a Twitter headline might make it seem more substantive than it is, or that they spent 20 minutes talking about Hamonic whereas they talked about him for like 3 minutes.

Meh, as long as he's paid like a 3rd pairing I'm fine with it. He's going to battling just to get in the top 6.

Seems odd that Winnipeg isn't the front runner.
