Not a dive, just a very awkward losing the balance by Getzlaf. Hilariously stupid for a NHL player, but I don't think he was trying to get a penalty here.

P.S. I don't like Getzlaf or the Ducks much.

Yes, it was a dive.

I understand there was contact and he was losing his balance. But why not drop to his knees and get back up?

There's no reasonable explanation for why he throws his right leg up in the air like that other than a dive. A toe pick doesn't cause that. He just would've fallen forward. (I should know from toe picking way more than I'm proud of).

For the record I don't think Getzlaf is a notorious diver. But this one was.

Getzlaf is a lot better skater than I am, and even losing my balance I would've gone down more gracefully than that and gotten up quicker had I wanted to.

 Classic HF post right there.

I'm sure you would have been VERY graceful when busting your ass on the ice.

Though I'm enjoying the extents to which people will go to explain away a pretty clear dive.

It's so clear that nearly everyone but you is looking at it and saying "meh, dude fell down."

I think it was just an awkward fall. People can look funny when they try to maintain their balance, especially when they fail to do so.

If you're trying to maintain or regain your balance, typically you don't shoot your right leg out from under you and launch yourself forward.

It was a dive.

I wonder if it'll take the league as long to respond to the diving epidemic as it did clutching and grabbing.

Yeah, the league should look at the epidemic of diving, except that Getzlaf doesn't usually dive, so what's the point in saying something like this in this thread?

Like the Red Wings don't dive.

I don't think it's a dive either. Seems like he hilariously loses his balance moving forward.

This has happened to me too.

Oh man.. Not every fall is the same, he clearly thought he could keep himself up and ended up going down awkwardly.

can't even make a joke about tripping over the blue line...

I'm a decent skater and this was easily a dive... you just don't fall forward with your leg way up like that unless you propelled it up yourself, which is exactly what he did. Phaneuf certainly didn't do it.

Getzlaf clapping for the Kessel goal was way funnier. Just sayin'.

That applause was dripping with derisiveness.

You do when you try to maintain your balance, and you fail. It was an awkward fall.

You can see his left hand try to keep him up. I like Getzlaf and I don't even think it is a dive, he could have done a worse impression if he really wanted to dive.

The exaggerated fall is from him overcompensating to try to keep balance.

Same kind of fall as this. Looks exaggerated but it is not intentional.

Don't think I'd compare the two. Ruutu trips Phaneuf, and I don't doubt for a second that it took Phaneuf completely by surprise. I don't think he was trying to get a call, he was trying to fight Sharko and got embarrassed by the more veteran player.

On topic, it looked like an awkward fall. Not nearly enough to call that a dive by Getz.
