This is pure fantasy but...

When was the last time a Bruins prospect, rookie, unheralded shmo took the league by the balls? Krug in the 2013 playoffs? I think statistically, we're due for an unexpected breakout.

I have a gut feeling, based purely on wanting to feel good about myself and the Bruins, that Jack Studnicka is going to breakout big against the Habs and never look back. You have reams of papers, hours of tapes, mountains of evidence that he's not ready, players like him need time to adjust, let's not put the cart before the horse. You're absolutely right.

But it happens right? Lightning in a bottle? Why not Studnicka?

Pure wishful thinking I agree, but I'd love to see this. Perfect stage for it to happen, against the bitter rivals in Montreal, and Studnicka is arguably our best prospect and the one most likely to pull out something special, however slim the odds. Sometimes you just need those special, rare, joyful, defining moments, and wouldn't it be just grand if this were one!

I was thinking the same thing. It sure would be nice. I guess McAvoy would have been a surprise for us.
But many of our other prospects have sputtered.

Hope we dont see another ****show by refs like last time. We're missing bergy but I'm quite sure we get 4 points out of this road trip.

You have a better chance of winning the lottery.

Who is the hack crew for tonight anyway? Are we going to get a couple hometown boys making the hometown calls for the Habs like last time? I'd expect nothing less from the NHLOL.

Have they, though? They may not have had a dominant rookie season, but look at the youth in the lineup: Carlo, McAvoy, Clifton, Grzelcyk, Debrusk, Heinen, Bjork, and Pastrnak....

Today’s Globe:

Intriguing possibility

The Bruins (15-3-5) have sat atop the Atlantic Divison for nearly a month. The Canadiens (11-7-5) have inhabited third place/wild card territory for most of the season. No one in their dressing room is looking that far ahead, but count among those who would welcome a Boston-Montreal playoff series.

“One day. Oh my goodness. I can’t imagine,” said McAvoy, still two years away from enrolling at Boston University when the Bruins and Habs faced each other in the 2014 second round, a seven-game second-round win by Montreal.

You kind of inherit these rivalries, if you’re me,” he said. “You go to school, you hate BC. You come here, you hate Montreal. I didn’t grow up a Bruins fan, so I didn’t grow up hating the Canadiens my whole life. But you inherit it, you know there’s a history there, know the game means a little more than 2 points, even though that’s all that’s at stake.”

McAvoy, of Long Beach, N.Y., grew up a Rangers fan, so the Islanders were the villains.

“That rivalry, I don’t think it has much on this one,” he said. “Once you start to learn about the Bruins and Habs . . .”

Yes, I hate this.

Playing teams like Montreal 8 times a year was such a treat. 4 is not nearly enough.

So easy to fix too. Just cut down games against the Metro division teams to a home and home just like the Western divisions and allocate those 8 games to divisional match-ups. Add in one more game per year to make it 83, and have teams meet each divisional opponent 5 times.

When Seattle joins:

Home and home vs. the 24 out-of-division teams = 48 games

5 games vs. the 7 divisional teams = 35 games

That’s probably the only way the rivalry is coming back.

Habs fan here. As much as I have enjoyed the annual Bruins beating up on the Leafs in round 1, I would love to rekindle the real rivalry with a Bruins -Habs matchup. Nothing better IMO.

I agree, we are who each other loves to hate and it just hasn't been the same for while now.
