Karlsson+Pageau to Ottawa (15M)
Chabot to NYI (8M)
Korpisalo+Palmieri+(NYI Picks+Prospects) to PIT
*Ottawa dumps Korpisalo+Chabot to offset Karlsson+Pageau.
**NYI dumps Pageau+Palmieri to offset Chabot's cap. which gives Chabot positive value.
***PIT buyout Korpisalo for 333k this year, and 833k next year.
The end result is that Ottawa makes a lateral move cap wise because they dump 48M (42.66M if Korpisalo is bought out) and take back 40M. For Ottawa, they swap 2 negative value contracts for 2 different negative value contracts that fit better. That's the gist of it.
The Islanders dump 15M in cap to offset Chabot's remaining 32M. If the book on Chabot is that he is still good, but is overpaid, that should be enough to make him worth a protected 1st.
The Penguins get a do-over on the Karlsson trade because they get back a pick equivalent to what the 1st was valued at when they gave it up last year. They have to take back 15.66M in cap between Korpisalo's buyout and Palmieri, but they dumped a similar amount to San Jose when they made the Karlsson deal, so that is a wash. Also, Korpisalo's buyout cap hit is negligible over the first two years of the buyout.
Karlsson's NMC, performance, and term+cap means that the Penguins won't have many options to trade him. If they can get what amounts to a do over, that's a very good result for them.
Sens also get to party like it's 2016. They could send out feelers to Guy Boucher.
