The only way Karlsson works here is a Chabot exchange with retention to even out AAV.
If you do that you’d need to bring in a top 4 shutdown LD like a Methot to play with him so he can be impact. Would also help with the balance of the team and having a LD who can focus on shutting down his side of the ice would probably help the team out a lot. By freeing up Sandy from all the hard assignments . (trade Chychryn of course )

A 30 year old AHLer in Jacob Megna was able to play this role, he and Karlsson were + players together on the lowly Sharks. Right now Ryan Graves is. Before we had Methot and Kuba get career years and contracts playing with Karlsson.

Not only is it easier to get a strong defensive LHD vs RHD but Karlsson elevates his linemate and teammates to a much greater level than Chabot or Chychrun.

Karlsson is turning 34 years old and eating up 10% of the cap last place teams dont trade for these types of players. Karlsson has more hockey sense than Chabot awesome he still isnt a fit. You also arent pointing out something ground breaking. They both struggle with consistency and compete in the D zone thats what this team needs to address big time.

The irony of all of this is you blame Brady who brings the most consistent play of any player on the team outside of Giroux and Sanderson. But Karlssons teams have only underachieving or been terrible for 7 seasons. Insane stuff.

Voila a soft as f*** d core. Tell us again how you've never played the sport.

This team isn't supposed to be a last place team, everyone is in their prime and we're supposed to be competing for the playoffs.

That's why Staois is going on about adding veterans.

Out of Chabot, Chychrun, and Karlsson it is obvious who the team would benefit from most.

Also come on Brady is not a consistent player.

24 years old and it’s his third straight 30+ goal season, consistently in the league lead for hits per game. I’d say he’s consistent. You always know what he’s going to bring to a game.

I think he's consistent in his overall style of play but his style of play does not lead to positive outcome consistently.

For some games you will see him back check, break plays, and generally driving the play but that doesn't happen often. For the vast majority of the games he is a liability out there unless the puck is within 10 feet of the opposing net. He's not a possesion driver but he will create and capitalize on chances when he's around the net.

Need a lot more from him so in that sense I can certainly understand the notion that he's not consistent. Tkachuk relies heavily on his teammates to break plays and spring him on odd man rushes in the neutral zone. He needs to be more active in breaking plays himself.

Similar concept for Stutzle or Batherson. They produce similar points as last season but they are incredibly inconsistent in effort level and effectiveness if you look from a 5 game stretch to another 5 game stretch. Stutzle particularly has looked like a shell of himself compared to last season even if the points show on his hockeydb page.

What about bringing Karlsson back and pairing him with Zadorov as a UFA signing?
I like the idea its just the cap hit on Karlsson that is very worrying. No matter what we either pay a ton of assets to get retention or we lose the space to upgrade rest of lineup or we would need to trade BOTH Chabot and Chychrun - not ideal any way this would play out.

Would rather we bring in two new RD to play in our regular rotation. Both who are defensive-minded first, play well positionally, and are physical.

Sanderson-Zub
Chabot-???(4-5M)
Brannstrom-???(2-3M)

Orange County Prison
Karlsson+Pageau to Ottawa (15M)
Chabot to NYI (8M)
Korpisalo+Palmieri+(NYI Picks+Prospects) to PIT

*Ottawa dumps Korpisalo+Chabot to offset Karlsson+Pageau.
**NYI dumps Pageau+Palmieri to offset Chabot's cap. which gives Chabot positive value.
***PIT buyout Korpisalo for 333k this year, and 833k next year.

The end result is that Ottawa makes a lateral move cap wise because they dump 48M (42.66M if Korpisalo is bought out) and take back 40M. For Ottawa, they swap 2 negative value contracts for 2 different negative value contracts that fit better. That's the gist of it.

The Islanders dump 15M in cap to offset Chabot's remaining 32M. If the book on Chabot is that he is still good, but is overpaid, that should be enough to make him worth a protected 1st.

The Penguins get a do-over on the Karlsson trade because they get back a pick equivalent to what the 1st was valued at when they gave it up last year. They have to take back 15.66M in cap between Korpisalo's buyout and Palmieri, but they dumped a similar amount to San Jose when they made the Karlsson deal, so that is a wash. Also, Korpisalo's buyout cap hit is negligible over the first two years of the buyout.

Karlsson's NMC, performance, and term+cap means that the Penguins won't have many options to trade him. If they can get what amounts to a do over, that's a very good result for them.

Sens also get to party like it's 2016. They could send out feelers to Guy Boucher.

If the Avs wanna re-sign Sean Walker, I wonder if we could get Manson from them?

Or better yet, we sign Walker ourselves if the Avs let him walk.
