The NHL announced the annual retirements yesterday, headlined by the Great 8, Alex Ovechkin. Ovechkin will go down in history as possibly the greatest goal scorer ever, scoring 835 goals in 1411 games, the 2nd most in history, trailing only The Great One, Wayne Gretzky. The 37-year-old Ovechkin scored 35 goals and 77 points this past season, leaving some to question why he would retire when he's so close to the record. His 1539 points also ranks 13th all-time. Ovechkin was drafted 1st overall by the Washington Capitals in 2004 and spent the first 16 seasons with the Capitals before signing with Boston in July 2021. Suffice to say that Ovechkin's trophy cabinet is stuffed to the brim with 9 Maurice Richard trophies, 2 Art Ross trophies, 4 Hart Memorial trophies, 3 Lester B Pearson/Ted Lindsay awards, 1 Conn Smythe trophy, 1 Calder Memorial trophy, and a Stanley Cup ring.
Boston lost 3 other key players to retirement as well: Patrice Bergeron, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and David Krejci. Bergeron will likely go down as the greatest defensive forward in NHL history, having won the Frank J. Selke trophy 6 times over his career, twice more than any other player in history. Bergeron is also a two-time Stanley Cup champion and won the Art Ross trophy in 2020. Bergeron's outstanding defensive proficiency often overshadows his offensive gifts, as his 1065 career points often flies under the radar. Krejci also won two Stanley Cups with the Bruins and was a fixture of Boston's top 6 for a very long time. Vlasic will retire as an Olympic gold medal winner with Canada in 2014 and was a stalwart for the San Jose Sharks for over a decade before being traded to Boston just a few weeks after Boston won the Stanley Cup in 2021.
Jay Bouwmeester, best known for his ironman streak and effortless skating, retires with 1443 games played for Florida, Calgary, and St. Louis, spending his final year for the Calgary Flames.
Ryan Suter, the minute-munching defenseman for the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild, hangs up the skates after 1340 games with 574 career points.
Anaheim's long-serving captain Ryan Getzlaf retires with a Stanley Cup Ring, numerous Presidents' Trophies, and two Olympic gold medals to go with his 1137 career points.
Russian winger Ilya Kovalchuk also calls it quits after 1104 career NHL games. Kovalchuk scored 524 goals and 1059 points despite spending several seasons in Russia playing in the KHL. Kovalchuk won the Maurice Richard trophy in 2004.
Vancouver's Antoine Roussel opted for retirement after spending the past 2 seasons in the AHL. Roussel, a French native, is the highest-scoring NHL player in France's history with 205 career points.
