Free Agency
The Free Agent Frenzy broadcast team:
Host: James Duthie
Deal Breaker Desk: Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre LeBrun, and Gord Miller
Instant Analysis Panel: Ray Ferraro, Jeff O’Neill, Dave Poulin, Martin Biron, Pierre McGuire
FA Bait: Craig Button
Free Agency Panel: Jamie McLennan, Aaron Ward
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duthie: It's time for TSN's annual coverage of the Free Agent Frenzy. It's 202,0, and although they pool isn't as deep as the incredible pool last year, we still have some great talent available. Craig, who are the top players in play?
Button: James, I wouldn't underestimated the talent that this Free Agent Crop has. It features 2 elite forwards in Mikael Granlund and Nicklas Backstrom, 2 elite defensemen in Roman Josi and Tyson Barrie, and an elite, albeit aging, goalie in Corey Crawford. After that there is considerably depth from Schenn (F), to Krug (D), to Anderson (G). Quite the pool.
Ward: The Rangers are going to be on the hunt for a forward, shockingly. Despite having a great offense on paper, it faltered last season.
McLennan: I'm also hearing rumblings that they're talking contract with a few backup goalies on the market. They weren't impressed with Alexandar Georgievs performance last season. They're not ruling him out for the job again next season, but they want a better option.
McKenzie: Philadelphia has already completley revamped their goaltending, signing both Corey Crawford and Craig Anderson so 2-year deals. Both are 35+ and they will benefit from having eachother to give them time off.
Another team we've seen revamp a position is Colorado, who despite losing Tyson Barrie, signed both T.J Brodie and Sami Vatenen to multi-year deals.
Dreger: Nashville and New Jersey have both also been news factories today. The Predators lost Roman Josi to Detroit, but added a solid defender in Anton Stralman and a great winger in Tyler Toffoli. New Jersey added two of the biggest names available when they signed Tyson Barrie and Mikael Granlund to 5 and 6 year deals respectively.
LeBrun: We've already heard Josi is heading to Detroit, but they weren't done there. The Red Wings also signed G Robin Lehner to be there starter as they cut ties with Jimmy Howard. Minnesota may have lost Grandlund, but they added Mike Hoffman to provide some scoring replacement.
Miller: Joe Thornton, who was long rumored to want to join the Rangers before he retired, has instead joined Dallas. Have to assume NYR weren't interested with their center conundrum they already have. Speaking of centers, Nicklas Backstrom, winner of three straight Stanley Cups with the Capitals, has now joined the Boston Bruins.
Dreger: Brayden Schenn is heading to the Rangers on a 3 or 4 year deal. Hearing the cap hit is $7.000M no matter the term.
Poulin: The Rangers have this last chance to put it together. There was no way they should have struggled to score last year, but they did, so they were forced to do this. The deal is actually fair value, but it doesn't make any sense according to the Rangers situation.
Ferraro: I have to agree. The Rangers have Pavel Buchnevich, Filip Chytil, Brett Howden and Lias Andersson all on expiring deals. They will likely cash in at around $20.000M - at minimum, and they currently only preside over $8.000M. That's a scary thought.
McKenzie: Malcolm Subban is going to join Schenn in New York. Obviously not as big of a deal, this one only carries a 2-year term. It's total value is $3.500M.
Biron: This is a great signing. Georgiev does not see to be the heir to Hank's throne, and I'm not sure if Subban is, but he's a better option.
O'Neill: I still don't see how the Rangers are contenders when they haven't taken care of their biggest issue on defense. There is a glaring hole in their lineup in the fact that they don't have an elite D. Every single team that has won the Cup in the last 10 years has had an elite defenseman, save for the Penguins when Letang was injured. Chara, Keith, Doughty, Keith, Doughty, Keith, N/A (Letang inj.), Letang, Carlson, Carlson, Carlson.
McGuire: They have Lindgren, Byram, Bigras, Keane and Hajek coming up in the ranks. They have incredible depth, and Henrik Lundqvist is a better goaltender, even at 38, than any of those teams that won the Cup, so he can help. Not predicting a Cup win, but don't count them out.
Duthie: Okay folks, that's all the time we have. We will see you back here on TSN at the Trade Deadline, where you may juts see the Rangers return to buying.

Resign Phase
The Rangers entered the resign phase with $12.000M to utilize. No big names, but quite a few depth contracts to sort out.
Player | OVR | Age | Potential | Position | Player Type | Stats | Years/AAV | Thoughts |
Ryan Strome | 80 | 26 | Med Top 9F | C/RW | Playmaker | 60 GP 12G-12A-24P +11 ... 2 PIM (NHL) | 1/$2.100M | Good to see if last years resurgance was a fluke or not. The kid has talent, but he has yet to put together two straight good seasons. |
Alexandar Georgiev | 79 | 24 | Med Fringe Starter | G | Hybrid | 17 GP 5-8-1 .892 SV% 3.27 GAA 1 SO (NHL) | 2/$0.900M | Cheap deal, and trade- able contract should the Rangers wish to move on from the young goalie who struggled mightily last season. |
Chris Bigras | 77 | 25 | Med Top 6D | D | 2 way Defender | 76 GP 6G-23A-29P +2 ... 49 PIM (AHL) | 1/$0.850M | Bigras was once considered to be a failed prospect, but he just may have a shot at the Rangers roster come opening night. Could be his last deal if he doesn't make the most of opportunity. |
Ville Meskanen | 77 | 24 | Med Top 9F | RW | 2 way Forward | 76 GP 16G-30A-46P +2 ... 12 PIM (AHL) | 1/$0.900M | Meskanen has a shot ast Frk's spot as they play a similar, shooting game. Same situation as Bigras, although Meskanen is not a failed prospect and would be more of a success story. |
Ryan Gropp | 76 | 23 | Med Top 9F | LW | Power Forward | 75 GP 11G-18A-29P +14 ... 34 PIM (AHL) | 2/$0.875M | The much criticized 2nd round pick of New York in 2015 finally looks to crack the roster. Still time even if it doesn't happen this season, hence the two year term. |
Alexander Porkhorkin | 74 | 18 | Med Top 6F | LW/C | Sniper | 55 GP 9G-7A-16P +2 ... 13 PIM (Russia) | 3/$0.925M (ELC) | The Rangers 9th overall pick in the Draft signs his ELC immediately and will likely join HFD to get acclimated to NA ice. |
Nil;s Lundkvist | 69 | 19 | Med Top 4D | D | 2 way Defender | 48 GP 5G-17A-22P -4 ... 12 PIM (SHL) | 3/$0.900M (ELC) | The Rangers 28th overall pick in 2018 signs his ELC. Bright future for the young defender. |
Nico Gross | 68 | 20 | Med Top 6D | D | Defensive Defenseman | 64 GP 8G-34A-42P +7 ... 10 PIM (OHL) | 3/$0.875M (ELC) | Rangers 4th rounder in '18 signs his ELC. Rangers have lots of prospect depth on D, so tough to see path to NHL for Gross. |
