+1 Skinner, who caused perhaps his first takeaway of the season there.

We're getting far enough along that some of these trends can't be a coincidence.

Jokinen has really leveled off since the beginning of the season. Before the New Year he was 13-4 (+11) and now he is 17-8 (+9). His game has dropped at both ends.
Staal makes way too many defensive mistakes for a guy of his caliber.
Stewart quietly has nearly as many pluses as LaRose now, and a lot fewer minuses.
Considering the matchups he gets, Sutter is a defensive beast.

Harrison with 50% more costly defensive errors than anybody else is troubling.
Spacek makes a remarkable number of errors considering the amount of time he has been here.
McBain's offensive production is impressive, and his defensive game isn't as bad as his reputation.
Faulk seems low on offense... I suspect he's more of a PP specialist than he seems.

-1 Samson and
-1 Staal for the Keystone Kops collision trying to get the puck out of the zone

Per the project guidelines, goals scored as an extension of a PP sequence don't count.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 2:42 Smith (Halischuk, Bourque)
-1 Spacek, who had multiple opportunities to affect that sequence and took advantage of none of them.
-1 McBain, who was a step too slow to seal the post against that wrap-around.

2nd 12:31 Wilson (unassisted)

+1 Staal, nice power move to the crease.
+1 Tlusty, playing with jam and making things happen in front.
+1 Harrison, smart pinch and he beat 4 Rangers to the rebound.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 8:21 Anisimov (Gaborik, Stepan)
-1 Faulk, got seriously worked over on the boards.
-1 Harrison, who did nothing to affect the shot other than screen Ward.

2nd 14:53 Gaborik (Stepan, Bickel)
-1 Joslin, who is just physically too slow to get to that kind of wrap-around clearing pass. And really could get a -2 for also failing to defend Gaborik after the turnover.
-1 Faulk, who made a bad read which led to a 2-on-0 for Cam down low.
-1 Sutter and
-1 Harrison, who seemed to get crossed up in their assignments when Gaborik came down the boards.

3rd 1:57 Prust (Boyle, Fedotenko)
-1 Skinner... I swear he looked to scared to throw a hit there. That didn't look like a strategic decision. He wimped out.
-1 Spacek. I guess it's tough luck to hit the linesman on a dump-in, but that doesn't excuse failure to get the puck deep. And it doesn't explain getting caught flat-footed by Brian Friggin' Boyle.

+1 Stewart... look at the jets on this guy! Wish we'd seen more of that this year.
+1 Staal, nice long pass up-ice to spring Stewart.

2nd 15:02 Jokinen (unassisted)
+1 Jokinen. The shot was smart and opportunistic, but it was his persistent board work which led to the opportunity.

2nd 16:18 Stewart (Staal, Tlusty)
+1 Staal, who subtly showed some great footwork getting to that rebound.

Interesting results developing at the higher offensive end:

Player | Plus | Minus | Total | Margin Of Error
Tuomo Ruutu | 25 | 8 | +17 | -
Jeff Skinner | 21 | 11 | +10 | 1
Eric Staal | 28 | 16 | +12 | -
Jiri Tlusty | 25 | 11 | +14 | 1

^ Imagine if we went to the main board and asked people to rank these players in terms of on-ice impact. Now look at their +/- figure for this season.

And on the lower defensive end:

Player | Plus | Minus | Total | Margin Of Error
Chad LaRose | 13 | 11 | +2 | -
Jeff Skinner | 21 | 11 | +10 | 1
Eric Staal | 28 | 16 | +12 | -
Jiri Tlusty | 25 | 11 | +14 | 1

^ Which of these does not belong?

Player | Plus | Minus | Total | Margin Of Error
Bryan Allen | 6 | 15 | -9 | 1
Tim Gleason | 9 | 13 | -4 | -
Jaroslav Spacek | 5 | 15 | -8 | -

Allen and Gleason have each played more than double Spacek's even-strength time to achieve their numbers, while also playing large PK minutes and drawing much tougher matchups every night. AKA, Spacek is a friggin' disgrace on defense.

Edit: How much tougher, you ask? Well, Allen-Gleason have shared TOI most commonly across from Ovechkin, St. Louis and Moulson. Spacek has shared his TOI most commonly with Matthias, Phaneuf and Brewer. THAT much tougher.

Player | Plus | Minus | Total | Margin Of Error
Justin Faulk | 4 | 16 | -12 | -
Jamie McBain | 16 | 22 | -6 | 2

I like Faulk's game, and am impressed with his past couple of months, but he has a lot of improving to do. On this board we tend to overlook a lot of rookie mistakes.

as we should because good rookies learn from their mistakes. I think Faulk will be fine.

I think he is getting at the perception that Faulk > McBain.

According to this, McBain is far and away our best ES offensive producer. I wonder how he would stack up to Pitkanen if the latter was in.

I think he is getting at the perception that Faulk > McBain.

According to this, McBain is far and away our best ES offensive producer. I wonder how he would stack up to Pitkanen if the latter was in.

But if we are talking about mistakes and defensive play, we aren't really looking at ES producing, we should be looking at ES goals against, so if you look JUST at those numbers, you come to a different conclusion.

Even though McBain has played more games, the ES TOI for the season isn't that far off between the two (971 for McBain, 895 for Faulk so an 7.8% difference). You could also argue that Faulk is getting those minutes against tougher competition vs. McBain. Faulk was responsible for 16 goals against (and 4 of them were his 1st 3 games of the season where he was a train wreck) and McBain has been responsible for 22 goals against.

Using statistics to say that Faulk makes more rookie mistakes than McBain doesn't really hold water. I think most posters understand that both of these guys are young and will need to continue to improve in that area.

And wouldn't you judge a defenseman by the goals prevented and not the goals against in the first place? It's about breaking up scoring chances, which don't show up in the scoresheet or +/-.

For instance, against Tampa (I believe), Gleason had two great plays to break up grade A chances against Ward, one where he dove across the crease to knock the puck away from an open net. And the only thing that indicates those plays happened is the lack of a minus during that shift.

The same goes with Faulk. He's making the plays that don't show up on +/-, even subjective ones.

^ Absolutely. I didn't mean to imply that Faulk has been worse than McBain, and certainly not lately. Just pointing out that we have a tendency to force rookies up the depth chart before they're really ready to handle more responsibility. We did the same thing with McBain a couple of years ago, when we went into his first full season expecting him to be instant top-4 material.

The thing that strikes me about McBain vs Faulk above, is that McBain is underrated around here for his balance of offense and defense. Yeah, he gets burned from time to time, but he makes up for it with strong offensive play. On the whole he has been a LOT better than Jay Harrison, who gets lauded for his roundedness.

See below, where I assign random names to our regular defensemen in the style of NHL12.

Defensemen | | | |
Frank Ponikarovsky | 9 | 13 | -4 | -
Antii Johnson | 16 | 22 | -6 | 2
Ronald Jagr | 5 | 15 | -8 | -
Lars McDiddlebopper | 6 | 15 | -9 | 1
Horatio Smith-Pelley | 4 | 16 | -12 | -
Anton Kaberle | 9 | 23 | -14 | -

Looking at those players objectively, with the eyeball test already inherent in the numbers but no bias attached to the names, how would you judge them? Look for the guys you would consider the best-rounded, highest-impact players and then the ones you could consider too one-dimensional or generally not effective.

In order from top to bottom, they are Tim Gleason, Jamie McBain, Jaroslav Spacek, Bryan Allen, Justin Faulk, and Jay Harrison. Almost a perfect inversion of the consensus opinion on this board. There has to be something to that.

ES GOALS FOR

2nd 4:41 Tlusty (Samson, Staal)
+1 Spacek for a nice soft entry pass to get the rush started.
+1 Staal and
+1 Samson, whose passing on that play was really nice to watch.
+1 Tlusty for illustrating why there should never be 4 defenders inside a single faceoff circle.

2nd 8:30 LaRose (Gleason, Allen)
I'm going to defer to the crowd on this one. Do you guys think Gleason put that puck off the boards on purpose, or was it a terrible shot? That's going to determine the distribution of pluses here.
Edit: Consensus says to give Gleason a + for the possibly-lucky/possibly-clever shot, and LaRose for pretty much not missing the open net.

3rd 1:45 Sutter (Skinner, Gleason)
+1 Wideman...
+1 Sutter for proving that he is in fact good on breakaways.

OT 3:38 Faulk (Sutter)
+1 Faulk for making an outstanding play at both ends of the ice.
+1 Sutter for the prettiest little saucer pass you could ever see.

ES GOALS AGAINST

1st 13:59 Brouwer (Aucoin)
-1 Allen, first for getting driven completely out of his lane and behind the net, then for failing to contain the loose puck OR check Brouwer in any way.
edit: Also -1 and MOE point Gleason for giving up too much ground on the zone entry, complete with missed sweep checks.
edit: And another -1 and MOE point for initiating that sequence with a turnover, and flubbing an opportunity to stop it from developing.

2nd 4:11 Beagle (Orlov, Wideman)
-1 Stewart, who left Orlov wide open to defend a large patch of empty ice, but not the passing lane.
-1 Gleason... not clear why he thought it would be a good idea to charge the point there.

3rd 17:08 Laich (Johansson, Carlson)
-1 LaRose for that laughable attempt at an open-ice hit.
-1 Allen, who has been around long enough to know you play the pass in a 2-on-1.

Totals for the game:
+2 Sutter
+1 Faulk
+1 Samson
+1 Spacek
+1 Staal
+1 Tlusty
-1 Gleason
-1 Stewart
-2 Allen

Give Gleason the +. No way he intended to do it, but without that shot the goal isn't scored. Plain and simple.

Either that or put it in the MOE slot.

Suggestion for next year if you do end up doing it again. Rather than making the MOE slot simply a counter of disputable points, make it it's own +/-. That way, we'll have the final +/-, but then we'll actually have an idea of what it'd turn into if we incorporate the MOE. Now, we look at the MOE and see "6," and we have no idea how many of those 6 were potential pluses and how many were potential minuses. By keeping a separate +/- in the MOE category we at least know which MOE's were positive ones or negative ones, without having to go back and sift through 82 games worth of goals. Just a suggestion though...

I'd give the Canes 2nd goal a + for LaRose and Gleason, but give a - for Gleason on the Caps 1st goal. Got walked on the entry to the zone, started the whole thing.
