Two boneheaded plays that resulted in the other teams two goals.

Seriously though, what did he do on the Semin goal? Nodl skated down and turned the puck over, Semin cranked a slapshot in Joslin's face at the other end. McBain was on the other side of the ice the whole time, in correct defensive position. How did his actions result in the goal, or even affect the play at all?

I guess you could say he got caught in a pinch on the second goal, but it still had nothing to do with the scoring play on Joslin's side. McBain would have had to completely abandon his lane to make any difference there.

No way does a guy get a free pass for playing poor defense and NOT chipping in on the scoring at all.

The purpose of the project is to count the number of mistakes-leading-to-goals-against and contributions-to-goals-for. What he did in the rest of the game isn't really relevant.

Look, I don't like him or Joslin, and shudder to think that they may both be permanent fixtures if Gleason/Allen/Spacek get traded!

But I do understand how your system works!

I'd give LaRose a + on that Brent goal. It's obvious (and was stated by Brent) that he was trying to get the puck to LaRose on the goal line there, but the puck bounced off the skate of a Winnipeg defender. Without LaRose on the goal line, the goal never happens.

I had it that way and then talked myself out of it, not knowing what Brent had said. Edit upcoming, thanks for the correction.

ES GOALS FOR

3rd 3:15 Sutter (Gleason)

+1 Sutter, nice soft backhand :)
There may have been more to this one, but the only replay is cut short at the beginning.

ES GOALS AGAINST

3rd 7:36 Tavares (Moulson, Staios)
Puckhandling error by Ward put the defense in a terrible position. No changes.

Note that at this point, Gleason has more +s than Harrison with about half as many -s.

Situational ice time is definitely a factor so don't take those numbers entirely at face value, but I think it's significant given the discussion over their respective performances and Gleason's contract extension.

Some defenseman wandering behind the play stayed even.

I don't mean to be harsh on Bowman, but he was lucky that pass wasn't a turnover going the other way on Kopitar's stick. I don't think he had any intention of sending that to Jokinen.

Seems like that should be a MOE then... I mean it was a tape-to-tape pass that resulted in a goal. If you're not gonna give him a plus give him an MOE instead, but it really should be a plus.

Not giving someone a plus for an assist because you're grading them on what you think should've happened rather than what actually happened doesn't seem right to me. But, since there's debate, it probably should be MOE.

Good point, I'll make it a MOE.

To the second paragraph, I just think he actually made a pretty bad pass there. Unless he has MUCH better vision than I'm giving him credit for, he was making a short pass to Skinner that missed completely. If not for Jokinen moving over to pick it up, it would have sent Williams and Kopitar flying up ice in transition.

In that highlight package, the corner-angle replay gives a better sense of what Bowman was seeing on the play.

Game 54 @ Anaheim
3-2 SOL

ES GOALS FOR

1st 17:57 Ruutu (Tlusty, Faulk)
+1 Tlusty, quarterbacking the rush from end to end. Good stuff.
+1 Ruutu, who looked surprisingly similar to a skill player there.
Faulk, Harrison, Staal even

3rd 3:47 Staal (unassisted)
+1 Staal, got a little lucky on the bounce but it was a nice takeaway and scoring move.

ES GOALS AGAINST

2nd 12:48 Bonino (Visnovsky, Cogliano)
-1 Nodl, who ruined a great defensive shift by his teammates with shoddy positioning.
-1 Harrison, who was literally looking at the end boards while his man tipped it past Ward.
Dwyer, Sutter, Faulk

3rd 5:11 Koivu (Beleskey, Sbisa)
-1 Stewart, who was horrible on that shift and out of position for no good reason.
-1 Spacek for a somewhat ineffective defensive strategy.
-1 LaRose for reasons explained in bcc's post below.
Brent, McBain even.

OT 2:14 Perry (Brookbank)

I knew as soon as I saw this goal that I was going to hate doing the +/- breakdown. Obviously it's a trip, even Ducks fans seemed to agree with that. It seems unfair to penalize the Canes for a missed call. But the play goes on... it's not like Jokinen dumped the puck directly into the net. You gotta expect bad calls and react to them.

-1 McBain, who actually got back into position at one point but then turned his back on Perry. If he simply skates backward instead of turning, that one-timer doesn't happen.
-1 Jokinen, who covered McBain's spot well for a second but really needed to read that play better. He ended up drifting toward the crease when it should have been obvious from his vantage point that the shot was going to come from the wing. Part of the problem being that, like McBain, he turns his back on Perry.

I'm going to go ahead and give both of them a MOE point because that's a tough, tough goal to judge.

Totals for the game:
+1 Ruutu
+1 Staal
+1 Tlusty
-1 Harrison
-1 Jokinen
-1 LaRose
-1 McBain
-1 Nodl
-1 Spacek
-1 Stewart

Stewart was out of position because LaRose switched wings to chase the puck. Watch as they enter the zone, LaRose is to the right of Stewart (or left, from the perspective of the TV angle), which means he's the RW on the play. He then chases the puck down to the face-off circle and stays there, making no attempt to cover either point until the puck is already passed. Stewart could have played the situation better and thus deserves a -, but LaRose put him in a position where covering either point is leaving the other one open.

LaRose even.

LaRose must be some kind of wizard to be both even and a minus 1 on the same goal. Did he distract you with his dreamy smile while you were fixing it according to BCC's thoughts?

Or were you just on meth?

I left a hint, see if you can figure out the correct answer.
