If Murray/Forsberg play well we'll never know what we have in Gus long term.
If Murray/Forsberg poop the bed, and Gus steps in and takes the starting job; we're left with an albatross.
Pick your poison.
Let's go Soogard!Mando!Meri!

Go take a walk.

Is Gustavsson viewed as their future #1? Or is he expendable given their commitment to Murray and the other young goaltenders in the system?

He should be playing behind Murray, but the team can easily let him stay in the AHL because they gave a contract to Forsberg.

No he shouldn’t. He should be the starter in Belleville playing 40-50 games.

He’s good but needs seasoning, and we absolutely don’t need him feeling the heat when we start reeling off some loses.

Besides, if Murray plays like we have seen for 7 straight games now, Gus wouldn’t play much in Ottawa this season.

1. Murray - starter in Ottawa
2. Forsberg - backup in Ottawa, likely traded by the TDL

3. Gustavsson - starter in Belleville, likely promoted to Ottawa after Forsberg is traded
4. Mandolese - has AHL experience & makes a good backup in Belleville

5. Sogaard - I assume he plays in the ECHL to get as many reps as possible, likely called up to Belleville after Gustavsson gets called up to Ottawa.

People too easily forget how mediocre our goaltending situation has been since, well, the dawn of the franchise. Now that we have options let's manage them patiently and not complain.

Having Gus chomping at the heels of a serviceable back up in Forsberg is literally a perfect situation heading into this year.

Anyone think he has any sort of chance to pass Ulmark for the number three goalie spot on Sweden's Olympic roster? How good would he have to be to do it? Or would being stuck behind the pylon d-core effectively nullify any chance of playing his way onto the team?

I don't see it. Markstrom, Lehner and Ullmark all have track records. Barring an injury to one of those three I don't see Gustavsson being in the conversation at all.

Did our goalie pipeline just get less crowded for the kids?

NHL:
Forsberg (45 games)
Gustavsson (25 games)
Sogaard (5 games)
Mandolese (5 games)

AHL:
Sogaard (35 games)
Mandolese (35 games)
Merillainen (10 games)

Isn't Merilainen back in Kingston this year as an OA? Not sure if I read that or am making it up.

I believe Gus can be an NHL backup. Murray ruined his season, being hurt, then having to sit while Forsberg was lights out. He missed out on a lot of AHL games because Murray was made out of papier mache

Getting serious Zibanejad trade vibes on this with every passing season and that last game didn't help despite the win.

Really glad PD's gone tbh.

2-4-2 in 9 games with 4.15 gaa and .882 sv%. Was this post caught in a time lag from last season?
Looking at his development as a whole rather than just this season where Minnesota's had a bad start as a whole and their pitfalls are largely not goaltending related.

He developed into a #1A right when we traded him trying to secure our goaltending.

What??? He's one of the worst goalies in the league this season. Dead last in GAA. Even worse than Skinner and Samsonov:

They talked about this during the Sweden game broadcast.

Minnesota, for a long time, has always played a very goalie friendly system. Thats why you had guys like Talbot and an aging MAF looking like solid starters.

After many years, they've changed that system this season, and well.... you can see the result.
