He knows he is heading straight to free agency, so why should he care. Some other team will sign him to a one year minimum wage deal or he might be contemplating retirement after this year.

Why should he care? Because he’s a professional, he’s on a team trying to make the playoffs, he doesn’t want to let down his teammates, maybe he wants to make more than the veteran’s minimum if he continues playing next season. There is a lot of reasons.

It’s too bad Ducharme can’t make anymore moves because Staal should be watching the games. At least, as @montreal pointed out, his minutes have decreased. Next he needs to take him off the power play.

I'm willing to wait and see if he can turn it on in the playoffs or not. MB throws shit against the wall, sometimes he hits, other times you get Alzner, King, Martinsen, Semin, Schlemko, Kinkaid, Niemi, Peca, Streit, Logan Shaw, Davidson, Flynn, Ben Scribbles, John Scott, Victor Bartley, Matteau, Chaput, Froese, Lessio, Sekac, Bowman, Tangradi, Rene Bourque, Malhotra, Gilbert, Douglas Murray, Kaberle, etc...
Neither Bourque or Kaberle were acquired by MB

The rest of this season doesn't matter. They're in the playoffs in an ideal situation as underdogs against their arch rivals. Staal knows this, all the vets do. Along with the coaching staff and management. The task is quite simple, step it up a hair against a team they've played pretty much dead even so far this season, in a playoff series. If they beat the Leafs the season automatically is a success. If they don't, where they are in the standings will have them drafting close to where they have the past two years. Not a bad consolation, considering they have a raft of draft picks still. If they win beyond the Leafs, it becomes a great season, even though their draft position drops.

There isn't any point in moving from the spot they are now in the standings. No home ice advantage to speak of. Going up or down even a notch, makes their situation worse. Staal led the Wild in playoff scoring last year, over a point per game. Look at the long game for a change.

Everyone is looking at the "long game" and it's still the same mediocre one it's been for years...struggle to make the playoffs, struggle to beat a better team if you make it...every year...rudderless ship hoping to stay on course...everything you just posted is making excuses for mediocrity in the HOPES that it gets better with no evidence on the ice to back it up...that's not being a "Negative Nelly"; it's just posting facts instead of excuses...

What's the point in looking back? Would you be any happier with today's team if they won the Cup lasr season? Or three in the past decade? Every season is a restart in sports, that's the charm. I think they're in the perfect spot this year, as we speak, and pretty well positioned for the near future.

Every season is not a restart, it is a continuation of a common goal around the League, built from the foundation of previous seasons...again, you provide no support or substance to your statements...in order to reach The Path, one must set upon it to begin the journey...otherwise, you're just going the wrong way...forget who said it, but they knew their shyte...

Well if you want to get historical (instead of hysterical) :( don't the Habs have the most Cups of any team in the league? What's the gripe?

I was the one who “said it”. You are welcome...

That Bargain Bin doesn't have the ability to continue that proud tradition...and the evidence is mounting as we speak...and you still provide absolutely no evidence to the contrary...

I’d be happier as a Habs fan if they had won the cup or 3 in the last decade. It would also show me that this organization knows how to win. They don’t know how to, not having made it to the final 8 teams in the playoffs in 6 years.

And with not much roster turnover year over year every season isn’t a restart. Almost all the teams retain their elite talent. Teams may all start with the same record but that doesn’t mean they have the same chance at winning the Cup. No one thought the Red Wings had the same chance at winning the Cup as the Lightning entering this season.

I'm sure Staal cares. And I'm sure he hoped something would spark by coming over. The body just isn't cooperating is my thought. Evans has the energy and body to contribute.

And then take the pro scout who told MB that he still had game and stuff him into a cannon and blast him into outer space.

Our tradition and pride stopped in the 70's. Any one coming into Montreal talking about our proud tradition is full of it. We sucked since the 70's and continue to suck. But hey, at least our coaches since the 80's can talk 2 languages.
