Leafs can offer 6m x 7years; hopefully he takes a discount (will be offered more by other teams) to play on a contender.

If Ellis is ready to "take a discount to play on a contender", why wouldn't he take that discount right where he is? On a better team than the Leafs where his discount would impact his wallet much less thanks to the difference in tax rates.

We can have a sit-down meeting with him and present how he can live out his boyhood dream. We are good at that now.

If we are not signing a core piece, we should develop them from within. I'd rather give a kid a spot than have a vet take it up their opportunity moving forward.

I would too but I also know that Babcock is the coach...he just doesn’t trust young players with tough minutes with the exception of Matthews, it would take a couple seasons before Liljegren, Dermott, Sandin can earn his trust.

We signed Tavares to go for it. There is no holding back now. If there is a 27-28 year old RD available, you go and try to get him. If there is a great player available at the deadline you trade a first round pick to get him.

Nashville this year 117 (with Ellis lets say an extra 6 points so 111)
Toronto this year 105 (without Tavares lets say an extra 6 points so 111)

Lets call it even; Ellis can decide which 111 point team he would like to play for.

Toronto is on the upswing where as Nashville may be on the downswing in terms of contender-ship:

Hyman(2.25) Tavares(11) Marner(7)
Marleau(6.25) Matthews(10) Nylander(7)
Johnsson(2.1) Kadri(4.5) Kapanen(2.1)
Grundstrom(0.925) Jooris(1) Brown(2.1)
Leivo(1.3)

Rielly(5) Zaitsev(4.5)
Dermott(0.863) Ellis(6)
Borgman(1.3) Liljegren(0.895)
Rosen(1.3) Holl(0.675)

Andersen(5)
Pickard (1)

Kessel(1.2)

Basically every core player we have is under 30 and many are 25 and under yet we may be on the downswing.

Isn't your goalie about to retire? and the top 2 centers, as well as the remaining of the top 4 dmen will be on the wrong side of 30 for the majority of an Ellis 7 year contract.

And we have a 23 year old replacement at goalie, already playing in the NHL. Our top 2 centers are 25 and 28. The top 4 D-men turned 29 a couple months ago, two turned 28 a month or two ago and Ellis won't turn 28 until the new year. Our offensive core is 23, 25, 26, 28, 21, 25 and 19. That is not anywhere close to a downswing.

OK Cool. Hopefully he can make it to June 25 2019 with no contract. Would love for Dubas/Shanny/Babcock and his ex-teammate Tavares to have a sitdown with him.

Contrary to the standard HF hyperbole, 30 and over is not a death sentence in hockey. 6 out of the top 10 scorers this season were 30+. I'd reckon those scorers will be pretty high this year too.

As health and fitness becomes better and better with these athletes, more rules and protocols are put in to make the game safer, and more money is put on the line with these megacap contracts, good players are middle fingering father time.

Even if Josi takes a discount on his next contract, it will be minimum 9M.

Can they fit all of Subban (9M), Josi (9M) and Ellis (~7M) in longterm?

He's a 6x6 guy in this day and age. A nice guy to have on your 2nd pairing.

Can Nashville sign him or will he become cap casualty?

I’d love the Leafs to try and get him but if he hits the market he will likely be a overpaid by a bit out of the Leafs range. I’d go after Stralman if the Lightning somehow get Karlsson and decide not to sign him.

The issue isn’t the cap but the expansion draft.

Nashville protected 8 skaters and 1 goalie for vegas. If they try to do that for Seattle they will expose some good young forwards

It looks like they should go 7-3-1 which means probably trading one of their 4 Dmen and get back a replacement Dman who’d be exempt.

He's maybe a $5m-$5.5m player that will get $6.5m-$7m on the open market because he's a RHD with a decent shot.

He'll get minimum $7 million on the open market if he wants. If he has his sights on a contending team, including Nashville of course, then anything between $5 to $6 million per year would be a decent deal all things considered.

Edmonton may have a spot for him, lots of question marks on our blue line.

Josi is left exposed as a UFA and re-signs after the expansion draft.

From what we can tell the hold up isn't really the dollars, it's the fact he wants a NTC so he is protected from the Seattle expansion. My guess is he signs for 6 X 6 and Poile gives him a hand shake agreement or a short term NTC that only lasts til the Seattle draft is over.

First of all, when were Ellis and Tavares ever teammates except for possibly some random Canadian WC or WJC teams?

Second of all, I'm really not sure how you expect to give Ellis 6-7M per season when you're paying Tavares, Matthews, Marner and Nylander almost 40M.

Nashville has 9 million in cap space with so much of the core locked up already . If they go from Rinne to Sarros in a year with a defensive team like that And Sarros showing flashes they will still be great and have much more cap space there . They will be fine . They can keep their defense together and still have cap space. Ellis will resign.

1 2009 WJC gold medal team.

2 See post above with dollar figures. Nashville going to pay almost 25 mill for their top 3 dmen?
