I can't speak for others but I don't think Marner is better today. I do think that when all is said and done he could have a better career than Eichel. I don't see why that's so outrageous

He very well may...I just think Eichel gets underrated due to the market and his injury last year. I think he's having a monster year.

If somebody wants to post a link to the report that Nylander will not negotiate a contract in season apparently. Suck s because I think his price is going to go up substantially.

We have JVR, Bozzo, Leo, Fehr and Moore coming off the books next year. We can replace them with Kappy, Tavares, Grundstrom and Aaltonen and if Nylander demands north of $7M, we can move him for a dman.

Why Tavares when we already have Nylander?

Matthews --> $10.34 million x 8 years
Nylander --> $6.5 million x 8 years
Marner --> $6.5 million x 8 years

I'm sorry but it's madness to move out a young bluechip talent just because you may be apart by like .5-1 million in salary.

If he puts up 70+ points this summer he will be worth 7+ million. Nothing wrong to pay a guy what he's worth. I doubt the Leafs management will hand out an RFA salary that they don't think a player will live up to.

There's a fair chance that Nylander outscored Tavares this season too....

Nylander drafted #8, Ehlers drafted #9 in 2014.

Last years stats
Nylanders ..... 81 games 22 goals 39 assists 61 points
Ehlers ........... 82 games 25 goals 39 assists 64 points

Ehlers seems like the perfect comparable for Nylander .. Same draft, same age, same position, and essentially same production.

Hopefully, but to keep in mind also, Nylander has the advantage of waiting another season before signing a deal. If he puts up big numbers his agent can point to two good seasons instead of just one.

That might be the mistake of Leafs and Lou Lam.

Nylander and his agent have now said they don't plan on negotiating mid season, so that does give Nylander another season riding shotgun with Matthews and piling up the points potentially and in turning his demands is a higher contract.

So if Winnipeg gets Ehlers for $6 mil AAV and Leafs end up playing +$7 mil for Willie when they could have gotten a better cap hit by re-signing this year that only hurts the Leafs cap down the road.

You have to wonder if Lou said today here is the Ehlers deal to Nylander would he sign the exact same contract or think he can do better.

I'm not sure if you saw this stat list I posted earlier in this thread regarding last season (made a small error on Eichel's calculation):

Points per
1,000 minutes
TOI:
Ehlers44.63
Matthews47.72
Nylander47.03
Marner47.14
Eichel46.91

What is your point ? Marner and Nylander > Eichel and Ehlers ??

Makes perfect sense to me.

Great stat, and speaks to the potential of the big three vs. some other young stars.

In regards to valuation of contracts, and direct comparables, that does not change the fact that the accumulated statistics are virtually one for one (i.e. Nylander\Ehlers). You don't get paid off of points per minute (though smart franchises should most certainly track the metric internally).
