not to mention picks and prospects. trading nylander for anything less than a top pair D is a loss, a 1st and a prospect will get you a top 4 D why throw away an elite asset at his lowest possible value. Rangers and Flames don't have the type of dmen that would be worth trading nylander for

What #1/#2 dman do you think Nylander is going to get you 1 for 1 ?

An overrated healthy scratch dman for Nylander? No thanks.

Who in their right mind would trade Nylander for "an overrated healthy scratch dman" ? Any trade involving Shatty and Nylander would be much bigger.

Dubas kicking the tires on Shatty doesn't have to mean Nylander going the other. That is my thinking.

Kreider +K'andre miller+ Tampa's 1st in 2019 plus Skeiji is what i would ask from the rangers for Nylander

Nothing on the flames that they would deal is intruging to me for a nylander deal.

Lewis Gross was also at the game. Thread name should probably be changed to reflect that

Main goal probably to chat with him

that's the point probably none, it still doesn't mean you settle and trade him for a top4 you use other assets. Unless a team has 3 top pair D and no scoring forwards we wont get the dman we need in a nylander trade. use futures and brown type players to get a top 4 D instead of 1 elite piece in nylander

I do think this most likely has to do with Dubas visiting Gross and then just going to a game while he's there. In saying that, if it did have something to do with a trade, NYR have a few pretty interesting pieces.

  • Kreider would add that powerforward element we mostly lack, and is good/versatile enough to play on any of the top 3 lines. Downsides are he's only signed for two more seasons, is 27, and isn't as good as Nylander. So they'd have to add some pretty decent pieces to this (e.g. K'Andre Miller, TB's 1st, their own 2nd which should be a high 2nd, Lias Andersson, Nils Lundqvist, etc are pieces I'd be looking at).
  • Skjei is a 6'3 defenceman that skates well and can log big minutes, he's a legit #2-3 guy and would really solidify the top 4. He's also signed long-term at 5.25M. Really the only issue with him is that he's a LHD and not a RHD. If he was the main piece in a trade for Nylander, that's a lot closer in value than Kreider is.

Wouldn't at all be interested in pending UFAs like Zuccarello, McQuaid, Hayes, etc forming part of the trade return. When you're trading a 22 year old high profile RFA, you need to get pieces that are guaranteed to help for multiple years IMO. Shattenkirk even if he was at the level he used to be at is a terrible fit, so wouldn't want him. We need guys that can log big minutes at even-strength, not PP specialists that need their minutes babied at even-strength.

I'm not sure how sold I am on Skjei yet, and Kreider would be a very underwhelming main piece coming back. As for the UFAs, I agree. Zucc is a piece that you add to a bigger deal as a short-term replacement for Willy, but should be nowhere near the main piece. McQuaid and Hayes honestly don't move the needle at all for me.

Shattenkirk is currently on an elevator going down, there should be no reason why the Leafs would have interest

he's currently averaging 17mins a night which sounds a lot like a 5/6 w/pp time

he's not the answer to any anything

You be lucky to get Tkachuk for Nylander 1 for 1 but you want Flames to add. Sure.

“I want my team to lose every trade it makes” Why wouldn’t I want the Leafs get the best value they can for Nylander? Maybe the Flames value Nylanders pure skill and centre potential over a crash and banger like Tkachuk

I imagine this was nothing more than a chance to meet face to face, as well as watching Calgary who they play next week.

Why not both ... scouting the Rangers and talking to Gross about Nylander?

Rangers are in rebuild mode, so they could have expiring pieces (1 or 2 years left) that interest the Leafs.
Flames had a hard time demoting some young defenders but did so due to waivers, not performance.
Flames have forever underperforming Bennett, who can look really good one night and press box the next. Buy low?

Gross and Dubas should at least discuss options.

Of course we all want our team to get the best value. I personally think it is clear that the Flames do not prefer Nylander's skill over Tkachuk's crash and bang and hence why Leafs would need to sweeten the deal.
