I thought Akira had a good game. Looked shaky as hell on the one goal - playing the pass instead of the shot because he doesn't trust our defense... which is pretty much par for all of our goaltenders who had previously seen our defense the past five years or so.

I know folks are worried about Wood at $4.5 or Blackwood at $3.5 but I think the only one we need to worry about is Damon Severson at anything above Marino's contract.

Remember when we thought he was good defensively and his lifetime -131 was actually just a victim of being on a bad team? He's actually a -1 this year on this frigging juggernaut where Siegs is +15 playing against top lines. With three points.

Giving Severson $5m+ might be a worse move than Wood or Blackwood.
For some reason and I don't know why, but I feel like Severson is the least likely to be re-signed of the 3.

I'm starting to think Blackwood is the second least likeliest, but Severson seems to be the least likeliest re-signing of all of them.

I'm actually starting to think for the first time ever that Graves might be re-signed before Severson, if we can get him on a cheap-ish, short term deal. If not only because they don't want to definitely ice two rookies with no experience.

I somehow get the feeling that Severson will 99% not be back. He'll be Rafalskied out of here on July 1st.

And let’s not lift posts from other boards, people have the right to be ignorant and homeristic on their own board. And if (rather when) anyone is that stupid on the main board leave the dunking on them for there.
Awww Pops, it’s all in good fun. (Unlike posting there, which is, as the kids say, cringey.)

^This. I think you're absolutely right.

Edit: If we can get Graves on Marino's contract, I'm doing that. I don't know if I'd be so gutsy as to trade Severson at the TDL, as I think he's great value on our third pair. If we are still on a heater by the deadline I'm not touching a frigging thing... but if someone swings a big dick $6m+ contract at Sevs like they might. sayonara.

I can see Severson being the the next Shattenkirk. Some team(s) out there are going to end up giving him big money and their fans are going to say he's a 1st pairing D that was just held back behind Hamilton and Marino, and they'll end up buying him out or dumping him a few years later in frustration.

I honestly don't want him here after this year, unless he really wants to give such a discount that we can't refuse.

And it would have to be enough of a discount that it would cause the NHLPA to be even more angry than the discount Marty gave us on his second to last contract here.

There was something that came out a week or two ago that Friedman said the hold up was term and that he wanted 8 years. If anyone gives him even 6 or 7 years they're out of their mind.

And I'm a fan of Severson's, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices and get rid of players in the salary cap era and he's not nearly our best defenseman anymore. And then we have two guys yet to debut in the NHL that definitely aren't better than him now, but probably will be in two years from now.

I'd have zero issue with Graves being re-signed so long as he agrees to NEVER TO DO ANOTHER COMMERCIAL EVER AGAIN.

WTF was this?

The RD free agent market is super thin. Someone will absolutely over pay for Severson.

But with how we are playing I simply let him walk instead of selling at the deadline.

I've seen Graves interviewed so many times and never noticed the missing tooth until the Car Shield commercial. Is that real?

He's one of the more random Devils players to do a Car Shield commercial, but I guess he's cheaper than Hughes or Hischier. They probably can't afford one of those guys to do the ads after all the money they've dropped on Ric Flair and Ice-T.

The rest of his teeth look too nice (and maybe even fake) for him to have that one missing one like that.

And I've never seen the missing tooth in his locker room interviews and I've watched a lot of them this year.

Severson is definitely a goner. He’s been shifted to a very sheltered 3rd pair and his role on the PK has been noticeably reduced.

He’s still on the PP2 but it’s not like he’s particularly good on it, we just don’t have a lot of great alternatives at the moment.

In Fitz’s season ending presser he talked about what he wanted to see from his players and I remember “hard on the puck”. Severson is not that at times, to me it’s his biggest flaw. He’s a pretty big guy but he’s real mushy around the net and doesn’t pay attention to the little things.

Posters are going nuts for Marino because he’s the opposite despite not having the size.

Graves is a bigger question since he and Marino are getting the tough minutes and he plays so much on the PK now. It’s not like Fitz can just easily pencil in Bahl and Luke in those spots.

I'm not giving Graves 6 years. He is a solid Dman but he is not at that caliber where I want to pay him for a stretch that includes the down side of his career, given the talent we have coming up. 4 or maybe 5 year term max depending on the cap hit.

Severson is playing with brendan f***ing smith

And still getting elite results on ice

He’s not been bad stop with that
Not keeping him has nothing to do with him being bad on our 3rd pair we just aren’t going to re-sign him to keep him there.

Definitely doesn’t make sense to bring back Severson with Nemec not too far away, but he is most certainly a reason why we’re a relentless team. He’s not putting up points, but he is still very important to our transition. Very glad we don’t have a 3rd pairing with two plugs.

I agree, but I think we're going to need another RHD next year. I'm not willing to gamble on Nemic being ready, and the only viable replacement in case of injury is Smith.
