From what I read Nurse was asking for a contract starting with a 6 long term. That could mean 6, it could also mean 6.9.

I don't think the Oilers had the cap space to go over 6 at the time.

6.5 would sure look nicer now, but it was an overpay at the time which everyone would have been furious about.
Partly because Holland signed Kassian to his extension a week and a half before Nurse signed his.

The gift that keeps on giving.

At this moment Nurse is worth 5M max after this season. He has been outplayed by Ceci. I would have rather lost Nurse for nothing then sign him to a crippling franchise destroying 9.25x8 contract a year earlier then he had to.

Terrible GM, he has been worse then Chia.

No he hasn't .

facts . Left side Chia -- Right side Holland

Eberle to Spooner <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Kane for nothing - Forwards added
1st and 2nd for Reinhart <<<<<< Keith and a 2nd for Jones - D trades
Lucic <<<<<<<<<<< Hyman - UFA signings
Cap management = Cap management - both bad at it
Drafting = Drafting - hard to say right now
Puljujarvi situation <<<<<<<<<<< Puljujarvi situation - Chia had him leave and he was never returning
Playoffs 1 year =< Playoffs 3 years -altho Chia got to the 2nd round
Goalie Koskinen 4 years <<<<< Goalie Smith -2 years at 1/2 the cap
Maroon trade >>>>>> Bear for Foegele Forgele was ok so far - Maroon was great

I tried to compare D for D forwards for forwards

Yeah forgetting a bunch of stuff like Kassian horrid signing, trading 2 2nds for AA, cap signings Chia is a million times better than Holland. Holland also made shit Lucic for Neal trade when Lucic is still useful to this day and we could still use him.
Lucic his first year here was better than Hymans.
Pulji is a non factor and won't even be resigned.
Kane pretty much forced a signing here, any gm that was here would have gotten him same with Barrie. Holland however. Resigned Barrie when we already had a better option in Bouchard.

Holland was and is a horrible GM and his Nurse signing might be the worst signing in the NHL. Nurse is barely a second pair dman.

This is pretty revisionist. Lucic was hot shit here and his contract was considered unmoveable.

Neal clicked early on but I blame Holland for not getting creative to get rid of him the way a Stan bowman, Julian briesbois, Kyle dubas would without cap implications.

If you wanna win you have to be prepared to be equally as dirty

Lol Darnell nurse is not the worst signing in the NHL. Holland has overpaid maybe 1.25m. If much rather have Darnell nurse over a Jacob trouba, Brett burns, Eric Karlsson etc.

Yeah lmao, if lucic looked like half of what he is in CGY we could have kept him. Too bad he just quit.

Might have been due to different expectations and use of the player. If I recall correctly, Looch wasn't exactly great his first year in Clowtown, but with the arrival of Sutter, he actually started to look like an NHL player again, and contributed. And we all know with a Sutter team, they all have at least one Lurch on them.

No, but logically he would have been better off exercising patience. There was no rush on the horizon. Whats the worry? Made zero logical sense and goes back to one of the chief complaints about Holland being very poor when it comes to his contract ability.
The worry was that Nurse Petry'd and refused to sign closer to becoming a UFA.

Nurse is a 7M defenseman if he plays consistently. He's an 8 - 8.5M defenseman if he gets closer to his production from last season.

The AA deal fell apart because of COVID. Hard to pin that on Holland.
Lucic for Neal was a clear short term win for us as Lucic completely gave up.
Pulujarvi being here has value, more value than him being in Europe. He will be traded most likely. He's a depth guy. You are expecting too much. He has been bad in the playoffs though.
Other teams were interested in Kane. Let's not pretend he was only interested in one team.
Your take on Nurse is ridiculous. He is a bit overpaid, but he is better than some of the others who got similar deals last summer. At least he plays the hard minutes, unlike Hamilton. And Seth Jones was way worse defensively than Nurse this year.

Behind you!
I have always felt that Nurse was a good, solid defenseman. His price is a little high, but we do get a hard worker, who puts in solid ice time and who is usually very beneficial to any line combination he's on. It's amazing to think, this guy is still developing, as a player...

Beyond useless. 0 hits, -3, cause of 3 goals single handedly. Zero heart, zero fight, zero push. This guy is a certified loser. He might be the worst contract in the NHL next season. Holland absolutely destroyed this franchise by signing him a year before he had to.

How is my take on Nurse now? What about Pulji? Two absolutely useless losers. Nurse makes Seth Jones look like prime Orr.

That was a terrible game for Nurse. Not sure whats wrong with him, but something is wrong with him. He’s Not the same guy he was this time last year. At all.

Something is obviously wrong with him guy, chill on the hate.

Another excuse

He’s been the same player minus his one good year in a Covid shortened season playing against the easiest competition he could ask for

Spare me

I have no sympathy for a player like him who squeezes the org out of every penny

He's injured imo. You can see him lift his leg in a funny way when he was behind the net by himself late in the 3rd. Still doesn't account for many of his bonehead plays though

That's garbage. He showed a lot of growth every year up until this one. This is the first time we have seen any regression in his game at all. Not sure why Nurse is getting the blame when it's the entire team who played like balls today.

This is on all of those f***ing clownshows in Oilers jerseys tonight. It was an absolute garbage effort throughout and even the best players were serving up gifts and missing assignments. How the f*** did they not learn anything after grinding through 7, barely, against LA and still not f***ing realize how you need to play and prepare for the god damn playoffs? These assholes SHOULD be embarassed, every last one of them.

Nurse has to understand he IS THE MAN on defense. His cap hit suggests he is, his workload suggests he is, his size and toolbox suggest he should be. If the team sucks ass in their end for most of the night (see: tonight) he is the one who is most responsible. The team goes nowhere until he understands that and actually puts the work into becoming better. We may as well light $9M on fire every year in Ford Hall if he can't get that through his head.

Revisionist history at its finest

He’s always been a 30 point Defenseman who has been mediocre in his own zone. You want to pay that guy 9.25m?

What part of his game has evolved?

Its not about just tonight either. He was putrid Tonight, but he’s been putrid all season and for a guy who’s ask was the moon, he needs to step the f*** up.

He showed a lot of growth offensively and stamina wise. He has never been good defensively.

At worst it's about a 2m overpay which is hardly criminal. Kosk eating 4.5m, Kassian at 3.2 are way more egregious.
