I can't see how building a shopping district and condos would be needed for a small rink and a gymnastics facility..

How about (as it states in the article you linked):
A legislature approved the district, which will serve as a way for the university to lease land to private developers to generate revenue in order to renovate Sun Devil Stadium and other athletic facilities without a tax increase.

Those renovations (according to the actual district's website) cost $256 million. Their website also states "A small arena is being planned adjacent to Wells Fargo Arena to house some of the Olympic sports with the possibility of including hockey. The feasibility of a new stand-alone hockey venue is also being evaluated but a decision regarding its status and location within or outside of the district has not been made."

So while they could have changed their mind in regards to the hockey venue it doesn't sound like it and $256 million renovations to the football stadium is no chump change. This tax district (to me) seems to be more about ASU having a funding source for the arms race that is big-time college athletics facilities.

I mean you don't make all these front office changes and buy an AHL team to move to Tucson for nothing. I do think that a new arena is getting built, I just think it will be built by the casino at Talking Stick. IA is just trying to use Talking Stick as leverage to try to get an arena built in downtown Phoenix or maybe Tempe.

What is ironic to me about Talking Stick is that it is essentially at the exact opposite end of the 101 loop so any fans that might have been gained in Glendale will have the same experience that East Valley fans now experience. We will truly see how valid the "all the hockey fans live in the East Valley" statement is because I have a feeling any fans gained by the move to Glendale will be lost lol.

ASU was never a possibility unless the Coyotes carried their own freight. When have they ever done that?

The tribes paying for an arena should have been announced already if it was a sure thing as well.

It's not at the "exact opposite end" - Westgate is significantly farther south on the 101 than Talking Stick is. But anyway, if I had the money to continue my season tickets, a drive to Talking Stick would be no impediment at all. Certainly less of a hassle than going downtown or going down to ASU.

Talking Stick is the best possible location because it's on the east side and it's right up around where all the major money is in Arizona - much closer to it than ASU or downtown would be. And the site has plenty of space to develop infrastructure, painless ingress/egress, etc.

But who knows if it's even being considered at this point.

Which is why I like the Tempe and Phoenix possibilities a whole lot better.

I'm guessing IA feels the same way you do - albeit for different rea$ons.

Talking Stick is 26mi from me and Karsten is 21mi - I suppose it's a quicker drive up the 101 (depending on the time and day) and parking is probably much easier.

Especially after they finish....whatever it is they're doing on the 101 from about McKellips north (I'm in DC so we're on the same route)... (DC is Downtown Chandler, they're trying to make that stick)

I hate this. Move or stay. Sign a long term lease that ensures the team will be here or get out. The uncertainty is worse than them moving even this many years into the game.

Maybe they're saving the news for the draft party? Fans need something to celebrate once we trade 7th OV for Tyson Barrie :sarcasm:

Serious question - do you think there would be cheers or boos if, at the draft party, it was announced we'd traded two first round picks, Max Domi, and Christian Dvorak to Toronto for Auston Matthews?

I'd happily dish Dvorak, and our 2 1st rounders for #1 overall.

Wouldn't dish Domi though. He and Duclair just work..

People at the draft party would probably cheer because a big thing happened. A spectacle. I'd disavow my fandom and commit to begin cheering for Toronto. I'd continually forget to cheer for Toronto, and by this time next year I'd no longer be a hockey fan. Not because of the one trade, but because of what the one trade would symbolize. That this franchise is again run by complete morons and another decade (at least) of dark times are still in store. I don't have time for that. I have things to do.

Take Domi out of that proposal, and I'd be pretty excited by the move. I'd consider it a bit of an overpayment and a pretty big risk. But exciting nonetheless.

I would boo but I won't be there. I think casual fans might like the move though

I'm not sure about that. From what I saw last season at the arena, Domi is already the third-most-popular player on the ice. Giving him up for a Scottsdale kid might not go over well with the paying customers.

The math just doesn't work. I think Matthews has a reasonable shot of being an 80pt player at least semi-regularly. I think Domi has a reasonable shot of being an 65pt player at least semi-regularly. I think Dvorak has a reasonable shot of being an 50pt player at least semi-regularly. Then there are TWO first round picks. That's just a stupid, irresponsible trade.

Tyson Barrie > 7th overall in this draft. AINEC.

Oh, I'd do the trade for sure. It's just kind of funny to throw a draft party when the pick could very well be traded. I suppose there is still 20 OV though.

Mentioned a while back that I'd be comfortable with either Strome+20 or Dvorak+7 for Matthews. Not really thrilled with either of those packages, but I feel they're both fair value and "overpayment" to pull in a 1 OA pick. Possibly add the 20 to the Dvorak deal. With this franchise, you have to wonder if the Matthews factor contributes to an arena deal... "The House That Auston Built"...

I liked last year when around pick 5 they decided to show the band they had on every TV instead of the draft. Kind of odd to call it a draft party then show less than half of the.......uh..........you know....... actual draft.
