Make my day.
Classic management.

Blame the losses on a lack of depth, all while having so much garbage floating around the system that you can't even sign desirable College UFAs

Tell everyone you found the found the lack of depth problem
Sign more depth
Tell everyone you have fixed the depth problem
Tell everyone you have an amazing prospect pool the minors ready to step up

play like rubbish
Get a few injuries
continue playing like rubbish
missing the playoffs

Blame missing the playoffs on lack of depth

So, the next Gaunce? Beagle? Sutter?
Beagle and Sutter are guys blocking his path here along with Eriksson and Virtanen and Granlund and Roussell and Motte and that other guy I have blanked from my mind. I could see his agent pushing him to somewhere with an easier path (like Edmonton).

It was this line of thinking on Justin Schultz’ part hat got him into trouble back in 2012.

Most of these college free agents are older anyways. So, it's 2 year deal for the majority of them. Only cause Teves is 24 does he get a 1 year deal. So, they will get a chance to see what anyone they sign will do in the AHL next season. If they don't develop, you cut bait or work out a new deal.

If this guys a center and has lots of options I'm not sure why he'd sign here. We're already liked into Pettersson/Horvat/Sutter/Beagle with Gaudette waiting as the #5, and the Canucks don't exactly have a stellar record with promoting guys from Utica.

Sturm does have some connections to the Canucks scouting staff so he should be a player the Canucks are familiar with.

Always entertaining to read screams of management incompetence in a thread involving highly sought after college UFAs.

Not sure I totally agree... Sutter is as good as done. Gaudette proven himself ready and Beagle isn’t going anywhere...

I think the Canucks are very thin beyond what you see in the nhl. The Canucks need centres desperately.

Pronman has him at #2 on his list of CHL, College, and Europe free agents:

"2. Nico Sturm, C, Clarkson-ECAC
May 3, 1995 | 6-foot-3 | 207 pounds
Sturm is a player who could project to the NHL as a fourth-line center due to the fact he’s 6-foot-3, skates well for a big man and has decent offensive tools. He’s by no means a playmaker, but he moves the puck well and has decent hands in tight. Sturm competes hard, gets to the net consistently and can kill penalties. He’s been one of the best players in the ECAC this season and I could see a quick transition in how he plays to the pro level."

Pronman: Ranking the top free agents from the CHL, college...

Man these write-ups annoy me. I could write half of them by looking at their size/weight and stats everything is so cliche and tells so little about the player.

“Skates fast for a big man” is one of those meanings statements said about every bit prospect nowadays similar to how every defensmen has a good first pass somehow. Skating is relative to other players, not relative to your height.

“Not a playmaker but moves the puck well”

That tells me absolutely nothing. That could describe every non-playmaker in the NHL with how freely many throw around that phrase.

“Decent offensive tools”

Well we already established that he isn’t a playmaker. His goal totals don’t jump off the page and aren’t mentioned here. His ceiling is apparently a fourth line centre so how could can these tools really be?

“Competes hard”

Yeah so do the rest of the players in the NHL (and AHL) with few exceptions.

I would pay $500 to never have to read another thing from pronman or hear someone citing him as an expert on anything.

You guys realize because we have Beagle, Pettersson is able to have 70%+ O zone starts right? Look what happen to Bo when he went down. You guys are so simple minded, majority of the stuff you guys post are just stupid.

Speaking of simple minded, literally anyone else could have been used to give Petey 70% ozone starts. That's not somehow a unique skill possessed by Beagle.

It's clear he doesn't watch as much hockey as he claims to, and has a collection of notes that he refers to from years before, adding his own "projection" to them after looking at youtube and a box score.

Simple-minded...lol. Amazing.

The point is, if we wanted a pure defensive specialist to bury in the D-zone and kill penalties, we could have found one for far cheaper and at less term than Beagle. There is no need to massively overpay bit players.

Guys like Riley Sheahan and Riley Nash are on cheap deals. Brad Richardson plays this role too. Heck, Gaunce could play this role too - and he has done it in the past, with a decent underlying profile to boot!

I get that Sutter is injured now, but how does a GM look at a roster that already has a Brandon Sutter on it (who literally does the same thing Beagle does, only a bit better) and conclude "I must give Jay Beagle big dollars and term"?

Happy for the kid.

Would be marginally happy if he made it here.

I’d rather see a guy like Gaunce turn the ship around and be a good 4th Line C for us (since he’s been with us for so long), but it looks like his days are numbered here.

Best of luck to Sturm and maybe we’ll see him here one day.

Faceoffs?

The Sedins got 80% ozone starts last year. How did that happen without Beagle?

Since you likely aren't going to get an answer: both Brendan Gaunce and Nic Dowd had much better numbers last year than Beagle has this year despite getting an even lower percentage of offensive zone starts. And that's despite the fact that Beagle wins more faceoffs - any effect the extra faceoff wins has on GF%/Corsi is already accounted for in those numbers. It's not clear he is an upgrade on either of those players, let alone an upgrade worth $12 million over four years.
