Well, at the least it's a lateral move from Volpatti to Sestito. Bigger guy, meaner by all accounts, has some actual decent hockey numbers behind him in other leagues, younger...I'm okay with it as long as he can bury the hatchet with Kassian.

Tom Sestito Appreciation Thread: Volpatti who?

Once again, Mike Gillis proves his ingenuity and his ability to adapt. He made a mistake putting Volpatti on waivers but quickly recovered by adding a 25 year old, 6'5, 230lbs monster in the line-up that can play.

There are not many players like Sestito in the league, not in the sense of ability, but his tools that he possesses.

- He loves to fight and is just a straight up physical beast! He just gets it, and is one of the few players that wants to drop it anytime, anywhere with anyone. Rypien was another player with this attribute.

- He can skate extremely well

- He has produced at every level he has been at, he has put up serviceable production that warrants him at least 8-10 goals a season in the NHL on the 4th line.

Claim to fame: He put 32 points, and 18 fights in 46 games in the AHL. That is quite the anomaly and not many players can actually do this. He also had three fights in one game, how many players in the league have that type of spirit and stamina?

I am looking forward to him develop under Gillis' tutelage along with Kassian, Weise, Jensen, LaBate, and Gaunce. Gillis is building a large team.

Some of us don't expect him to come in and be a 40-50pt player. What we expect is for him to do what he's done his entire hockey career. Something this team hasn't had in years. There is a difference between fighting and being a fighter. Sestito is a fighter and has the reputation that goes along with it... who just happens to be a 6'5 monster. It might have happened by fluke but this was a steal for Van. We are a better team today with Sestito then we were with Volpatti a few days ago. I read that MTL and CHI also put in claims for this brute. Anyone want to let CHI have him so he can eye up one of the Sedin's in the playoffs?... I didn't think so.

Ugh. Too bad Gillis botched the Volpatti waive - cause a guy who's played 7 games this year averaging 5 TOI isn't much of an addition IMO. In his team 1040 interview today, Gillis said they can get Volpatti back if Wash waives him at any point. He said they might eventually waive him - so hopefully he can come back.

Funny enough, this is the first Russian guy to play on the Canucks (under Gillis) since Shirokovs 2 game experiment.

Volpatti takes way way more minors than Sestito.

It's not like Vopatti was a big PK specialist. Didn't Gillis even say that they wanted to send him down just for that exact reason? To get him to improve his PK and defensive skills?

I agree about Volpattis inability to get the puck out of his own zone. But he knew his role in Van. If he played 6 mins or 9, he was out there making big hits and stepping up in weight category if he needed to. Sestito is much bigger - but I've yet to see it translate into being better. I guess we'll see. I don't think he'll be around much longer anyways, once Pizz is ready to go - I'm guessing they'll waive Ses barring injuries.
