It's funny, 10 years ago Harper would've probably already been signed to a monster deal, but the sport has really changed. Boras can spout all the BS he wants but it really is almost illogical to give this player a retirement contract

Boras and BS kind of go hand in hand...boy what a blowhard that guy is.

Does all this time passing, mean that maybe the 10 yrs and 300M from the Nats might just be his best offer? I would think other teams are scared of the term, and the whispers of the guy not being great in the clubhouse?

I don't think Harper will end up with nearly as much money as most people think. Or at least not as much as Scott Boras insists he'll be getting.

Which sucks for Scott Boras, of course, but.....***** Scott Boras.

Well to be fair he's younger than say Pujols was so at least you wouldnt be stuck paying a 40 year old 30M per year.

Stanton got 13 years when he was a couple years younger (yes Miami was desperate to keep him) and while there was a opt out, it was a player opt out only.

The 90s and 00s saw tons of big, bad contracts from teams at the wrong point in their compete/rebuild cycle. Teams have done well to learn from that. Boras is only negotiating with a few teams, teams that are in no rush to meet his demands. In a market with few interested teams leverage shifts to the teams as time passes. This isnt a comment on Harper, its a comment on how GMs have wised up and have become more prudent.

I don’t see Harper’s logic in going to LA if his goal is to win a World Series. The major pieces of that team are largely getting passed their prime now. I really don’t see them as massive favorites with other teams in the NL improving

They will still be contenders in the NL and he's a west coast guy that will likely love the opportunity to be in a big prime time market like LA.

He wants money. That's always the biggest thing.......winning is 3rd or 4th on the list.

They still have Seager and Bellinger. They'll get Kluber and contend for at least next 3 years.

Funny that Puigs 3 year WAR is higher than Harper's. I find it hard to believe Friedman would be for this type of thing
Agreed. In the last 7 seasons Rizzo is 19th in WAR with 29.2 and Harper is 27.4. Bryce has only been top 11 in MVP voting once and his career batting average is 10 points < Harold Baines.

funny you bring up war since it took baines 22 years to produce a third more war than harper in seven seasons.

Why aren't the Angels showing any interest? You'd think having the best player to play with would be attractive unless Bryce doesn't want to be a Barça Neymar.

harper is much better hitter than rizzo, lol

yeah, not really.

career slash line:

Harper: .279/.388/.512, .900 OPS, 139 OPS+
Rizzo: .270/.369/.484, .853 OPS, 128 OPS+

162 game avg:

Harper: .279, 32 HR, 92 RBI, 161 hits, 102 BB, 146 K
Rizzo: .270, 29 HR, 97 RBI, 161 hits, 78 BB, 112 K

30 HR seasons:

Harper: 2
Rizzo: 4

100 RBI seasons:

Not even getting into defense where Harper is a liability and Rizzo is a 2x Gold Glove winner.

Career WAR, Harper 27.4...Rizzo 28.8
