The Oilers could I suppose retain say $1 million on his contract and see if there would be a taker for him at that salary range.

I believe he was a scratch the game before.
On and off he's been one. To his (or Woodcroft's) defense, they've won pretty much all of their games over the past 30. I don't see the benefit forcing this guy into a key role, displacing the guys who got them there.

Why hasn't anybody in the Oilers org have been made to answer the question of why on Earth Manning was acquired? I haven't seen one presser where the Oilers were really cornered on that topic. At least give us the vague rationale on what this acquisition was about so we can evaluate the decision making. We're left wondering, continually, what the Oilers see in specific players because this org refuses to engage in even the slightest degree of accountability to speak on behalf of acquisitions. Lots of teams do this, and explain decisions to their fans, and why they made it. This org will do that if the extent of the trade was Taylor Hall. But it trades Eberle's for Spoons without so much as comment.

It would seem a no brainer for the org to be made to answer why they acquired a talentless McD adversary that put the star player out for half a season and then laughed about it.

Did the Oilers hire Manning specifically because their conclusion was that this indicated that Manning has big balls? Is that it? Is that the depth of evaluation?

A large part of the frustration is watching this org f*** up one thing after another and always having to wonder why.

PC was fired. He wanted him since last year or the year before. Not sure what else you can expect to happen

It really is mystifying how Chiarelli went about his business. At the time of the Manning trade, Russell and Sekera were both days away from returning from injury. Caleb Jones had been playing relatively well. Klefbom was what? Two weeks away from returning? And that same day, he’d already acquired Petrovic for added insurance. Yet he still aggressively sought out and acquired Manning, yet another LH shot bottom pairing nobody, despite him having an awful contract that he wasnt living up to, with two years remaining, PLUS he’s the one guy in the whole f$k?ng league that McDavid hates. The cost of acquisition was a relatively cheap winger who could score the odd goal and skate pretty well. Qualities this team was and is desperately short of. What possible reasons could he have had for thinking it was a good idea? Virtually anyone who watches the Oilers on a semi regular basis would have dismissed the thought of a trade like that immediately as being stupid. Yet Chiarelli charged ahead and, apparently, nobody had the brains, the balls, or the spine to talk some sense into him. This is the Oilers organization in a nutshell.

If he would've talked to the media or been available how other GM's have been, the media would've let him know how it was a bad move.

The media while complete idiots at times, do have a lot of contact throughout the league. Talking with them can give some insight on players. Especially when you only employ two pro scouts

FWIW Manning not playing in Bakersfield likely has more to do with the AHL Veteran Player limits than his game, if they didn't have Stanton, Lowe, Callahan etc down there already he'd likely be in. They're probably giving preference to the guys that got them where they are which is for the best. That said this isn't an attempt to defend that deal, it was an awful deal when they made it that didn't even fill a need considering they had already picked up a better dman who was on an expiring contract earlier in the day. To me this was the worst of Chiarelli's deals because there was absolutely zero chance ever turned into any kind of a win the minute it was made.

Does anybody know how many pro scouts a real team has? I never knew we only had 2 till recently and that doesnt seem like enough to cover the west let alone the entire league

Brilliant post. There are about 800 NHL players, there is only ONE who was absolutely a no-no, and he is a shit player by the way, yet Chia had had a hard on for him for a year and nobody in this f***ing organization stopped him. I mean, we could have somebody deliberately sabotaging us and the OBC would still approve all his moves, that was proven with Chia. Like you said, that's the Katz Oilers in a nutshell.

That's what is listed on the NHL site. Struds was all over this for a bit. Not just scouting, but the development as well. We don't have enough invested in developing players and scouting players.

So while it might be fun to say our pro scouts suck, is it really even their fault? Who even knows if they scouted any of the guys that PC traded for or signed. Especially Manning who PC apparently has been after for quite some time.

I really do get the whole veteran thing and have thought that's part of the reason. With that being said, if Manning was real good they'd find a way to get him in more often than not.

Lets keep in mind offensively the last time Manning was in the AHL he was a very good offensive d-man. Offensively pro-rated he'd be our best point producing d-man if he played to that level. However, right now he's showing goose eggs. The player himself needs to be better when playing and force himself to get more minutes and games.

MICHAEL CHIARELLIAMATEUR SCOUT
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

LOL
It is rather funny, but I have no idea if he's any good or not. He was in Boston all those years too, so who knows.

At least on the amateur side we have a bunch of scouts, so there probably is someone that is seeing the players he is.

Pro side I get a little concerned when there is nepotism with a Messier there and he's one of two pro scouts.

Chia will be in the Oiler's Hall of Shame along with Eakins, Burnett etc. His stupidity has almost no equal. Fortunately he built a respectable development system so he isn't at the very bottom of the barrel. Seems like he knew he was leaving so he sabotaged the Oilers with the last 3 moves. (Must have a job in Calgary) Koskinen overpay for a average goalie, Manning and Petrovic deals plus Strome for a nobody in Spooner,
