If Melnyk is cash poor buying out Bobby Ryan might be useful. While he doesn't save much money over the lifetime of the contract due to Ryan's signing bonuses and the cost of a replacement body (650k), it's basically a payment plan.

Instead of paying Ryan 7.5M next year, through buying him out he only has to pay Ryan 3.8M, and then a replacement player 650k for a total of 4.45M. So that's 3M he doesn't have to worry about each season for the next 3 seasons. If Melnyk is actually cash poor, that's a pretty good deal. An additional 3M in his pocket for each of the next three years is probably worth more to him than about 2M out of his pocket (due to the buyout) 4/5/6 years from now.
Thanks for the details
You’re quite the reference in terms of player’s contracts

Ryan was a beast on Boedker's goal. He didn't officially get an assist, but he was the guy who set it up by keeping the play going in the offensive zone...

He had a nice set up to Duchene right before the Boedker goal.

His hands (ironically) are his best quality at this point.

I don't think he fits in with this teams on ice identity. Off the ice, I don't know how important or unimportant he is to the chemistry in the room. I think if it wouldn't hurt the room we're probably at a point where a buyout might make sense just for the sake of both sides moving on. I say this knowing a buyout really doesn't save much cash due to his bonuses. (Although it spreads it out)

Ryan is still a smart player .. that can contribute on the PP and help add some scoring to a 3rd line.. His size and his hands are still valuable. His play in the Dzone is frustrating to watch because he is too slow to react to loose pucks or from down low to up high

Imagine our team if, instead of bobby, we have a legit top 6er who plays like Stone/Tiereny/Tkachuk/Duchene

I gotta admit tho, he did have couple solid shifts late in the game with boedker and duchene but this guy was also floating a lot in other parts of the game.

Ryan still has some juice left in him. Yes, he's overpaid, but he brings a certain skillset we don't have much of on the team.

We can't afford a PP specialist at 7 per
He can be replaced within imo
Anyway he won't be here in 3-4 years when were ready to compete

Ryan is invisible until he isn't.

He's like the opposite of Duchene who is always doing something even if nothing happens.

Lol jokes aside, Nylander is the exact type of forward we are missing. A creative playmaking star who can create plays from nothing. We have grit and speed and scorers we need elite creative players.

I agree. Hypothetically (or maybe not, Ottawa has been kicking tires on Nylander from what I've heard) what kind of package could we offer the Leafs? They'd probably ask for Chabot which is a non starter.

ya they need a D and thats a nonstarter from us no matter who they ask for. our only hope would be 3 way deal but doubt we'd come close to getting Nylander even tho I think we can sign him for 7 mil and he'd be a steal for every season of his next contract.

I'm pretty sure that we're playing with the cap floor right now.

I can't imagine Melnyk would add salary.

Let's say Ottawa signed Nylander to an $8 million/year offer sheet (which won't happen because Melnyk but whatever). Could they use the 1st and 2nd round picks acquired in the Karlsson trade, plus their own 2019 third rounder, as part of the compensation for Toronto? If so, Nylander becomes that grade A top 6 blue chip young player that everyone thought we should've got back for Karlsson.

Nope. They would need to use their own picks.
