For an 85oa goalie, Hammond is a beast in the playoffs for some reason. After playing a lot of GM mode, I've noticed that some players play above their usual standard in the playoffs, some are normal, and some play well below. In my Colorado GM mode, Varlamov was an elite goalie, but he almost always choked in the playoffs. I've seen certain forwards put up much stronger numbers in the playoffs compared to what they'd put up in the regular season while others disappear.

I've always attributed this to the "poise" stat.

Hello, I started my GM today for Buffalo! Hoping for a cup in the first 6 years
Thanks for reading this, this is my first write up so don't be cruel. If I do something stupid or annoying in anyway feel free to point it out to me and I will fix it. But without and further ado, welcome to my GM mode :)

Zac Dalpe returns to the team that drafts him

753828-lars-eller-connait-depart-canon.jpg

Lars Eller, one of the many new faces of the Buffalo Sabres

We traded Zac to the Canes because of a few reasons. First off he wanted to go back to Carolina and the Canes were happy to accept him. And also because Carolina was whiling to give up their 2nd round pick and the deal seemed even for us! We probably we not going to be able to give Dalpe a roster position so he will be happier on a new team! As for the Montreal trade, I was surprised we negotiated a deal that gives them another defence man for an offence man. The Canadiens have a somewhat struggling offence. We needed a 2nd line center and Lars fit perfectly for us. And finally the trade with Nashville. They have plenty of center men! Mike Fisher, Mike Ribeiro, Paul Gaustad and Craig Smith. So taking a center was not a problem for the Preds. We gave them a couple of picks, and a couple of prospects to boost their future, while getting a good centerman for ourselves!

Projected lines for Buffalo as follows...
Moulson(86)-Santorelli(84)-Ennis(84)
Kane(85)-Eller(84)-Hodgson(81)
Loktionov(80)-Girgensons(83)-Gionta(82)
Foligno(81)-Gregorinko(79)-D'Amigo(78)

WSH Realistic 2014-2015 season

Never done these before and don't like the way I captured the data. Rebooting the BEAGM and posting what I have in a flood.
edit: Nevermind not posting anymore hideous walls of text that no one will read. Just scrapping everything and starting over to work on the presentation as I go along for the new one.

washington-capitals-logo.edit.medium.jpg

WSH Realistic BEAGM
Team: Washington Capitals
Skill Level: Superstar
Period Length: 20 minutes
Penalty time scaling: off
Penalties: 50%
Fighting: 50%
CPU Trades: On
Trade Difficulty: Hard
Waivers: On
Starting Rosters: 4/22/15 roster update
NHL Salary Cap: On
Other rules:
• Not allowed to initiate any trades.
• May not counter CPU trade proposals.
• Can't sign free agents.
• May accept CPU trades.
• May claim players from waivers.
I’ve played way too many GM modes as Washington and it’s just too easy for me now. Since this is my first time posting my BEAGM I wanted it to be one I really cared about and put effort into. So the above rules should make it extra challenging and hopefully interesting. The trade block is actually very useful and it’s a feature I will be heavily relying it. I’ve got 1 absolutely horrendous long term contract with Brooks Orpik to resolve somehow. It should be entertaining to see how that plays out.
Strategies explained: Each strategy slider has 10 settings. I start each slider in the middle. Use the numbers to move the slider that many positions and the letter determines the direction.
Offense = Behind the net – Overload – Crash the net, Carry – Dump, Cycle – Shoot, No Block – Block
Example: Behind 3c 4c 1nb
Defense = Hold – Pinch, Cycle – Shoot
Example: 4h 3c

Pre-season 2014-2015 - The roster has too many grinder type players for my liking. There is no 2C or 1RW on the roster and the defense, while stacked, is just too pricey for my taste. It also doesn’t really leave any roster spots for developing prospects in the coming years. These are the things I will be looking to change through my trade block. Otherwise things are going to be tough for me in 2 or 3 years, contract wise.
Lines – Burakovsky is given the chance to claim the RW on my NHL top line. I hope it works out but have serious doubts. There really isn’t a great candidate for that spot but Johansson will have to suffice if Burakovsky doesn’t pan out there. The rest of the forward lines look pretty good even though I have about 2-3 redundant role players. The defense is stacked and I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up in the top 5 for GAPG. The AHL forward lines are hot garbage but that is mainly because I literally only have prospect with NHL potential down there. Not to say that the lines aren’t “good” but they are not to my liking. I like to use my AHL affiliate as a straight up farm team. The defense looks better and I have 3-4 prospects with NHL potential there.

Regular season 2014-2015
The pre-season showed that Andre Burakovsky is not ready for top line minutes just yet. While another youngster earned a promotion, Tom Wilson. The NHL forward lines were edited to reflect these changes. Hopefully I can shed some of these redundant players and their piss poor contracts from the bottom 6.
Ovechkin 93 – Backstrom 89 – Johansson 85
Glencross 84 – Kuznetsov 82 – Burakovsky 79
Wilson 81 – Laich 83 –Brouwer 84
Chimera 83 – Beagle 80 – Ward 84

CPU initiated trade – I think Chicago overpaid me here as I would’ve dumped Peters for even less, lol. Chandler Stephenson is a prospect from before my tenure and I didn’t see NHL potential there so I’ll gladly take the 4th round pick. Also these trades freed up 2 roster spots and a little cap. Making it easier for other teams to make deals with me.

All star game 2014-2015 - Mike Green made the team and Washington has played well up to this point. I still feel we have too many grinders and no one has offered anything up for my trade block to address that. I adjusted my trade block anticipating the upcoming trade deadline.

Forgot to record the player stats for the AHL.

Waiver claim – Yay this was superb as the teams depth at C is really really weak. I also want to get rid of Brooks Laich’s contract so this acquisition will help if that comes to fruition.
C C. Jarnkrok 78ovr 23yrs 3.5y $0.900M@1yr

Trade deadline 2014-2015 - Well I got my wish and was able to move 2 of my bad contracts. However the contracts I took on are actually a little worse, lol. These 2 skill players are much more useful for my roster though. Now I actually believe we can win the Stanley Cup. The draft picks are just icing.

New lines – The trades demanded new lines and I really like them. We are now dangerous from all 4 lines.

Marcus Johansson will miss 14-15 games, J. Ward takes his spot at 1RW. While E. Fehr 82ovr takes over at 4RW.

End of season 2014-2015 - Jarnkrok and Wilson have both progressed, 79 and 82 respectively. We won the President’s trophy! The talent in Hershey was just terrible this season and that is something I intend to rectify in the coming drafts.

Playoffs 2014-2015 - I don’t plan on going this in depth in the future and for this year only the (X) is not the playoff seed but where the team placed in the NHL standings.
WSH(1) vs TB(14)
WSH 2-1 Andre Burakovsky nets the first playoff goal of his career.
TB 9-6 no defense from either team WTF.
WSH 7-5 and the offensive battle continues.
WSH 4-3 and TB continues to show their ability to score on one of the top defenses.
TB 4-3 OT WSH fails to close it out in a tight game allowing 2 goals in the 3rd and eventually losing in OT.
WSH 4-2 closing out the series 4-2. Calle Jarnkrok scores 2 goals.

WSH(1) vs NYR(3) battle of some giants in the 2nd round in the East.
WSH 3-1 as Mike Green continues to dominate scoring his 4th of the playoffs.
WSH 3-2 in a tight game.
NYR 4-1 in a defiant win. Ovechkin tallied the only goal for Washington.
NYR 5-4 OT and yet another close game. The series is now tied. Ovechkin is coming alive scoring 2 goals.
WSH 3-2 OT in a thrilling game. Ovechkin scores again making that 7 goals in the playoffs.
WSH 3-2 toppling what could be their toughest opponent of the playoffs.

WSH(1) vs DET(13) will Detroit's surprising playoff run continue?
DET 2-0 as Washington blanks the scoreboard for the first time.
WSH 5-1 and they respond with a dominant win over the lower seed.
WSH 3-1 as they take control of the Eastern Conference finals series. Ovechkin now has 10 goals and is the playoff leader.
WSH 4-3 OT Andre Burakovsky displays his poise as he tallies the OT GWG.
WSH 6-4 and winning the ECF on the back of their 2 rookies, Burakovsky setup Evgeny Kuznetsov for the GWG. Ovechkin notched the empty netter to seal it, he now has 14 goals.

WSH(1) vs NSH(17) the Cinderella story that puts every other story to shame. Washington is expected to wipe the floor with them. However it should be noted NSH beat CLG(2) in a tight series 4-3. They then went on to sweep VAN(8) and WPG(16).
WSH 3-2 in a close game but Ovechkin displays his goal scoring ability netting 2 more.
WSH 5-3 and it's looking a little bleak for NSH. As Washington's secondary scoring out paces the Predators.
WSH 4-3 and Ovechkin's talent proves to be too potent for the Predators as he nets a hat trick.
WSH 2-1 and they've repelled the Presidents trophy curse and won the Stanley Cup. Ovechkin lead all scorers with 19g and 29pts.

Awards 2014-2015 – I don’t really care about these so I may miss some from year to year.

Scouted prospects – These are guys I’m targeting but since I can’t initiate trades I just have to hope my picks and their availability line up. The 1st number is where my scout projects them to be taken and the 2nd number is the draft pick I’ve allocated for them. Unfortunately the projected number is wrong pretty often until my scouting level increases.

Ennis at 11 goals, 14 assists for 25 points aswell
As of now we have a decent record, especially considering that our top scorer has only 28 points in 47 games! A notable trade that just aspired was that of Vancouver shipping off star rookie Jake Virtanen to Colorado for forward Alex Tanguay and defenceman Jan Hejda!

Trade deadline

Top scorers:
Evander Kane with 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points
Hodgson 12 goals, 27 assist to get 39 points
Santorelli 7 goals and 29 assists puts him at 36 points
Matt Moulson 13 goals plus 23 assists for 36 points aswell
Lars Eller at 35 points with 15 goals and 20 assists

Trade to Announce!

To :flames
Tyler Ennis, a 2019 2nd round pick and a 2016 + 2019 3rd(Both from MIN)

Finished off 7th in our division, 15th in our conference and 27th in the league

The Draft
We won the lottery!!
1st overall draft pick, McDavid goes to Buffalo!
2nd overall pick in the draft Arizona, who picks Mathew Barzal
3rd Overall pick falls in into the hands of Florida, they pickup Oscar Kylington
Boston holds the 4th overall pick, they are whiling to give it away, and Buffalo seems interested! Buffalo proposes a trade! Boston accepts!
With the 4th overall pick, Buffalo lands left wing Dennis Yan!
And with the 5th overall pick, the Washinton Capitals select defenseman Ryan Pilon
The trade with boston was this:
To :bruins
St.Louis 1st round (2015) NYI 2nd round (2015) BUF 3rd round (2019)

To :sabres
1st round(4th overall) 2015

Re-Sign phase and Free agency
After a very successful draft, we came to the resign phase where we negotiated contracts with the following players:
Girgensons for 3yrs at $2.5m
Gregorinko 3yrs, $2.7m
Larson 1yr $800k
Pysyk for 4yrs at a low $1.35m
D'Amigo took a 4yr $800k contract
Johansson(g) re-signed for 2yrs at $550k
Santorelli is on for 4yrs at $2.9m
Benoit is staying for another 2yrs at $1.75m
and finnally goalie, Hackett re-signed for 3yrs at $1m

Unfortunately we could not agree on a contract with goalie Anders Lindback!

Only 1 free agent pickup this year, and that would be right winger Justin Williams who joined our team with a 4yr $3.5m contract!

Justin Williams accepted a contract to join Buffalo, he will probably play 1st line time

2016 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
With Lehner failing to meet expectations, and Hammond approaching his 30's, the Senators saw this draft as one where they have to take a goalie with potential to become their future starter.

With the 15th overall pick, they planned on taking the top rated goalie in the draft J.Morrisey. Despite being ranked 15, Morrisey was taken earlier in the draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Senators went with their backup plan. They used the 45th overall pick on Ty Edmonds. Edmonds was the second ranked goalie who was expected to go late in the second round.

With their first round pick, the Senators took Julian Gauthier. With no RWers in the vicinity of their pick, the Senators went off the board with Gauthier who was ranked 25. Gauthier is a big playmaker who has second line potential. His size and strength makes him a relatively safe pick as he could find a spot in the bottom 6 if he fails to develop as a scoring threat.

SIGNIFICANT EXTENSIONS
-RFA Cody Ceci 3 year 2.5 (ending as RFA)
-RFA Matt Puempel 3 year 2.5 (ending as RFA)
-RFA Patrick Wiercioch 4 year 4M limited NTC (Ending as UFA)
______________________________

HERE AND THERE
-Zack Smith 83oa 3rd line GRN traded to Carolina for a 2017 2nd Round Pick. (With Lazar possibly graduating to the NHL, the Senators have too many centres. Carolina needed a 3C)
-Ottawa signs UFAs Jordie Benn and Cory Conacher both 80oa to 1 year deals. They will serve as healthy scratches/depth players.

Well, McDavid was a good choice :handclap:
McDavid, Visentin (arizona, goalie), Boucher (NJ), Grimaldi (FLA), Gostisbehere (PHI), Mantha (DET), Pastrnak (BOS) and Domi (ARI). Those guys will fight for the Calder trophy.

He start his career with a double against TB. (1 in second and the GWG in OT). The next game, it's another OT win for McDavid.
After 20GP, a total of 5 GWGs (4 in OT :amazed: )

Burakovsky gets his 100th point against Carolina.

But it was a difficult start for the Capitals. 4-4-0. My contract year, a moment of panic, and a trade, I even don't know why I've done this one. But why not, who knows.

To :caps
1st round pick 2017 (ARI)

4th round pick 2017 (BOS)

Before this trade I had 10 draft picks in 2017. (two 3rd, 6th and 7th). I don't even want to do this but Boston is the title holder and after 10 games, they were in the TOP 5 of the league. Arizona were 25th, now they are 27th. So yes, I lost the 2nd and 4th pick, but if I can get a better 1st rounder, is more important.

After the 20th game, I also trade Lindback, he's too bad.

BLOCKBUSTER TRADE
Yesterday morning the Ottawa Sun reported that upcoming UFA Kyle Turris had agreed in principal to remain with the Senators. Turris has one year left on his deal, and would have been able to test the market as a UFA.

With Turris agreeing in principal to an extension, Ottawa was put in a tough spot. Konecny had shown some amazing strides in his development over the off season, and looked like a lock for the second line centre position. With neither Konecny or Zibanejad ready to take over the first line centre role, the Senators weren't in a position to move Turris. With three top 6 centers, Ottawa had to move either Konecny or Zibanejad, or risk one of them failing to meet their potential as a result of being stuck with third line ice time.

The former near dynasty Chicago Blackhawks were shopping around 33 year old top 2 defender Duncan Keith. With only one year left on his deal prior to becoming a UFA, Keith was a prime trade chip for the Blackhawks. If they chose to hold on to him, the Blackhawks would most likely have immense trouble extending the 33 year old Keith.

Without a 2nd line centre to play behind Toews, the 23 year old Zibanejad was a perfect fit for the Blackhawks. A former 6th overall pick Zibanejad 85oa might flourish into a top centre on the Blackhawks, but the Senators felt that it'd be a waste of his potential and value to keep him stuck third on the depth chart behind Konecny and Turris.

Ottawa insisted on elite third line two way centre Casey Cizikas coming back with Keith. Cizikas is well regarded around the league for his great gritty two way play. The 84oa TWF had 27 points and was a +11 in 81 gameas last season with the Blackhawks. Cizikas who is currently signed for 2.9M will be a UFA in two seasons. Cizikas is considered to be one of the best, if not the best player in the league at his specific role on the third line.

As a result of having to move a near equal amount of salary in the transaction, and Chicago requesting another piece be added in order to convince them to part with Cizikas, Ottawa had to move top 4 defender Patrick Wiercioch to the Blackhawks.

Ottawa also had to include two draft picks to get the deal done. Their upcoming 1st round pick, and the 2nd round pick obtained from Carolina in the Zack Smith trade.
______________________________

“We paid a lot, but after last year's playoffs, we're confident in our team and feel if we are ever going to go for it now would be the time. It is always hard to give up a 1st, but our prospect pool is stocked and we can afford to do it. Keith and Karlsson might be the best pairing the league has seen in a long long time. It was very hard to part with Wiercioch, but we got back players that make our team better right now, and with Turris and Konecny both in our long term plans, it would have been impossible to give Zibanejad a fair shot. Cizikas is really really good in his role, and we think fans are going to be happy with this trade as the season goes on.”-GM Danielpalfredsson when asked about the trade.

______________________________
What The Hockey Analysts Are Saying
This trade was a blessing for the Hawks who despite losing major pieces as a result of ongoing cap problems are still a strong playoff team. Cizikas is highly valued around the league, and Duncan Keith is a top 5 defender in the entire league. But Keith is also 33 and a UFA. The odds of the Blackhawks being able to retain Keith would be very low.

Wiercioch is signed at 4M over the next 4 years, and as a result of Kane and Toews mammoth contracts, the Hawks have very little cap space to work with. Keith may ask for as much as 7M in the summer, and then they would have had to let him walk for nothing.

From Ottawa's perspective, Zibanejad had to be moved. Zibanejad was going to be stuck on Ottawa's third line with very little chance at powerplay or PK time. Cizikas doesn't have the pedigree of Zibanejad, and nobody will ever mistake him for a future 1st line center, but in the third line role, he's elite and he'll be better for Ottawa than Zibanejad was. Zibanejad will get a prime opportunity as the Blackhawks number two guy on a line with Teravainen and Hossa.

When you consider the picks they added, Ottawa overpaid to get this trade done. Zibanejad and Wiercioch for Keith as a rental and Cizikas would have bordered on fair value and would be a trade that makes both teams better this upcoming season. Ottawa's GM is on the final year of his contract, and maybe there was some worry about not making a big enough impact to get an extension, and that is why he threw in the picks instead of spending the season haggling. This is a much safer trade for the Blackhawks than it is for the Senators. If a few things go wrong for the Senators over the next season or two, this could be the trade that ultimately ends up crippling the team.

______________________________

In his final year on his current GM contract, did Ottawa's GM make far too desperate of a trade? Will the addition of Keith allow Ottawa to build on their impressive playoff run last year, or will the team fail to make an impact, and see Keith who is on the final year of his contract and will be a UFA walk for nothing in the summer?

______________________________
The Duncan Keith trade has divided the Senators fan base. Most fans feel it was a desperation move by a GM trying to ensure he'd get extended, and that the team should have taken the long term approach by moving UFA Kyle Turris to a contender in exchange for picks. Zibanejad was a fan favourite with first line potential, which has resulted in this trade sending shock waves of negativity throughout the Senators fan base.

The minority of fans are excited about acquiring a multi-cup winning defenseman and building on the past season's playoff run.

FORWARD PREVIEW
Up until now, Ottawa has taken a patient approach to developing their team. With an internal budget, they have been unable to take advantage of most of the big name free agents, and their line up has almost exclusively been built using players drafted by the organization.

The team hasn't been shy about picking up big name rentals at the deadline when they only have to be on the hook for an acquisitions remaining salary. But these are players who have played a few months with the team and then retired.

This is the first year where we've seen some changes to the line up. With Curtis Lazar ready to step into the NHL, fourth line center Zach Smith was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes for a second round pick.

GM Danielpalfredsson made his first major trade when he sent Mika Zibanejad and Patrick Wiercioch to the Chicago Blackhawks for Casey Cizikas and an ageing Duncan Keith. The Senators seem very enthusiastic about the kind of gritty two way play Cizikas will bring to their third line. Cizikas is likely to be paired with Mark Stone and Shane Prince.

Shane Prince's name has been a mainstay in the Senators rumour mill. With Mike Hoffman and Matt Puempel both ahead of Prince in the line up, and all three seen as similar types of players, don't be surprised if Prince ends up being moved by the end of the season. The rumour is, although the Senators are happy with Prince's development, they don't think a sniper fits the image of their third line, and would instead like to flip him for a young two way power forward type with some scoring upside.

Cory Conacher, better known as the punch line to the trivia question “Who did Tampa Bay trade for Ben Bishop” returns to the Senators. Conacher signed a 1 year deal to be a cheap depth forward for the Senators.

Hoffman 85 SNP-Turris 88 PLY-Ryan 89 SNP
Puempel 85 SNP-Konecny 86 PLY-MacArthur 85 TWF (*LW)
Prince 83 SNP-Cizikas 84 TWF-Stone 85 PLY

DEFENSE PREVIEW
The Senators might have the best top pairing in the league after acquiring 90oa Duncan Keith to play alongside 92oa Erik Karlsson. There's a possibility that Keith and Karlsson might be split up in order to make the team harder to play against, but for now, they'll be tested as a top pairing.

Marc Methot who has 3 years left on a 4.9M deal is beginning to decline and show his age. At 85oa (down from 87oa) he is still a strong second pairing defender, and will be paired with Cody Ceci.

With Wiercioch traded, Cowen and Borowiecki make up the bottom shutdown pairing. Cowen who the Senators thought might one day develop into a strong top 4 defender is looking more and more like he'll fail to meet his potential. The 83oa defender may have an opportunity to overtake Methot on the second pairing as the season goes on.

Keith 90 TWD-Karlsson 93 OFD
Methot 85 DFD-Ceci 85 TWD
Cowen 83 DFD-Borowiecki 80 DFD(*LD)

GOALIE PREVIEW
There was a very strong possibility that Andrew Hammond would be traded this off season, that was until he posted a .950 save percentage over two rounds of playoff hockey and helped the Senators come within a game of making the Conference Final.

The Senators seem like they are preparing for a future without Lehner. There was heavy indication that they would take a goalie with their first round pick at the draft, but top rated Jake Morrissey was taken one pick ahead of them by the Flyers. The Senators drafted Ty Edmonds in the second round, and seem to be high on him as a possible goalie of the future.

This is the final opportunity that the Senators will have to trade Lehner and get any significant value back. His contract ends at this season. He is an RFA, but if the Senators extend him, his next contract will end in UFA status. The Senators could potentially use Lehner to add draft picks back to their pot after moving their 1st in the Keith trade.

Hammond 85 HYB Starter 2.5White
Lehner 84 HYB Backup 4.5Red

12-Season 3 Preview

______________________________

After making some major changes in the off season, the Senators are having trouble finding a winning chemistry. In what can be classified as a disaster, roughly a quarter ways through the season, the team sits near the basement of the Atlantic division and the entire league. With their first round lottery pick belonging to the Chicago Blackhawks, along with Mika Zibanejad and Patrick Wiercioch, unless the Senators can turn things around sooner rather than later, playoffs look to be out of the question, and GM Danielpalfredsson may not only be out of the job, but he may also be the answer to the punchline of who made the worst trade in Senators history....oh about the Blackhawks, they are doing great.

A #HOCKEYTRADE, OTTAWA ACQUIRES KEVIN GRAVEL AND PATRICK EAVES FROM BUFFALO
Unhappy with the performance of Mark Borowiecki on their bottom pairing D line, Ottawa went out and looked for a trade with the intention of improving their bottom pairing.

In a change of scenery move, Ottawa swapped Alex Chiasson, a prospect, and a 3rd round pick with the Buffalo Sabres for Kevin Gravel and veteran 4th liner Patrick Eaves.

Chiasson was originally acquired in the Spezza trade with the Dallas Stars. After failing to materialize as a top 6 forward, Chiasson became a mainstay on Ottawa's 4th line. After a disappointing year, and with only two years left before becoming a UFA, Ottawa felt it was time to cut ties with Chiasson.

Gravel, a former highly touted college free agent never found his groove with the Sabres. With the Sabres overflowing defensive core, Gravel found himself stuck in the AHL. Despite being signed two years ago, he has yet to play an NHL game with the Sabres. Gravel still has a tremendous upside, but was a victim of a clogged Sabres defence line up.

As a result of the trade, the Senators had to place off season depth defence acquisition Jordie Benn on waivers. Benn was signed to act as Ottawa's 8th defender, and was a healthy scratch for the majority of the season. The Senators were happy to see Benn claimed by another team.

This trade is the definition of change of scenery. Chiasson should get a greater chance to make an impact as Buffalo is thin at RW. He may very well end up playing in their top 6. Gravel will get a chance to play every night alongside Cowen on Ottawa's bottom pairing.
