OTTAWA SENATORS VS CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS: REVENGE OF THE ZIBANEJAD
What are the odds that the two teams who participated in one of the biggest trades in modern NHL history would end up meeting in the Stanley Cup final as a result of that trade?

Senators fans were highly critical of GM Danielpalfredsson. With Mika Zibanejad on the tradeblock, there were dreams of the team getting a young high end defender, or maybe a package of high first round draft picks for 23 year old possible first line center.

Instead, Ottawa's GM went the route of a hockey trade. After last year's hopeful playoff run, he wanted a top 2 defender who could help Ottawa win the cup.

The Blackhawks came calling and dangled a player who might be the second best defender in the entire league behind Erik Karlsson, Duncan Keith.

There were other teams with trades on the table, some of these trades consisted of coveted young players. The problem Ottawa had, was the reason they were moving Zibanejad in the first place was they had too many of those types of players already and couldn't give them all adequate ice time to ensure they reached their potential.

Ottawa was stocked full of top 4 defenders, stocked full of second line forwards, the team needed a game changing top 2 defender, which is something no team EVER trades. The only way they were going to get that piece was by taking advantage of the fact that Chicago had Duncan Keith who at the age of 33 was on the final year of his deal, and would be asking for too much money for the Blackhawks to retain.

Senators fans initially hated the trade. It didn't help that Zibanejad began the year strong, putting up career numbers on the Blackhawks second line, and Ottawa fell to the basement early in the year. With the Blackhawks owning the Senators first round pick, the trade was primed to go down as one of the worst trades in hockey history.

With three quarters of the year remaining, despite a multitude of injuries to key players, the Senators rallied back into the playoffs, and clinched a wild card spot.

Zibanejad and Wiercioch both had career years for the Blackhawks. Zibanejad had 20 goals and 60 points in 78 games. Playing on the Blackhawks top pairing, Wiercioch had 59 points in 81 games, but was -10.

Ottawa made this trade with Chicago, because with Chicago being a Western team, the odds of them having to play in the playoffs would be slim to none.....but now with Chicago upsetting the defending two time Stanley Cup champion Minnesota Wild, GM Danielpalfredsson will have to stare the trade he made right in the face.

Can the Senators defeat the Blackhawks to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup? Or will Mika Zibanejad crush the dreams of everyone in Ottawa, and show the team that he was the one they should have kept?

GM Insider
Coming into the organization I see a lot of potential and also quite a few areas for improvement. I’m going to go through and analyze the organization so the fans have an idea of what direction I plan to take this team. The first area I would like to improve upon is the prospect pool. We currently have 4 NHL ready prospects in Burakovsky, Kuznetsov, Wilson, and Orlov. If you exclude those guys the prospect pool becomes quite shallow. Leaving Vrana as the only forward prospect while Carrick and Bowey are the only defensive prospects, with NHL potential. That means Hershey is only developing 3 roster players for me this season. That is something I will be looking to rectify in the upcoming drafts.
Another issue I would like to resolve is the excess of redundant role players currently on the roster. At right wing we have Brouwer, Ward, and Fehr. While we have Glencross and Chimera at left wing. At center there are Beagle and Latta. Basically the team is lacking skill players and has an abundance of grinder types, at forward. On the blue line we have Gleason and Orpik. Orpik’s contract is the stuff of general manager nightmares and he will be a permanent resident on the trade block. I will be looking to move at least two or three of these players during the season. I wouldn’t cry if half of them went to other teams.
Our goalie situation is just mediocre and Holtby is the sole reason for that. If it weren’t for him the situation would be considered abysmal. Peters is unnecessary and is actually causing a log jam of sorts. Grubauer and Pasquale are basically at the same point in their development but only one of them can start for Hershey. While Copley and Anderson have zero NHL potential. If Grubauer or Pasquale don’t progress further then the teams goalie situation could get real bad really fast. I’ll definitely be drafting a goalie in the next 2 or 3 drafts to help alleviate the pressure on Holtby.
That takes care of some of the main issues I currently have with the organization. There are still 2 more specific problems I would like to address. There is no first line right wing. Marcus Johansson is close but I don’t expect him to develop into one. The team is also lacking a second line center. Rookie Evgeny Kuznetsov will have to suffice but I have a problem with his lack luster face off skills. I’ve picked the team apart pretty good and in spite of all that I still feel we can compete in the playoffs. My goals this season are to make the playoffs and acquire one or two extra 2015 draft picks.

Three core players (Couture, Kessel, Stepan) of the Sharks over the years found themselves traded over the summer as the Sharks cleared cap space and moved in a younger direction

-- GM MCG promised that the off-season would be one to remember as the Sharks move towards getting younger and clearing up cap space, which succeeded as they traded Phil Kessel, Logan Couture and Derek Stepan and brought in Seth McNeill, Tyson Montgomery and Rob Staubitz, all NHL-ready talents. They also added Mark Stone, a strong two-way forward for the penalty kill and, an admitted cap dump in Bobby Ryan who will look to regain his game.

I REALLY want to start up myself a new GM mode, but haven't the slightest clue as to who I want to do.
My probable top 3 would have to be(Teams I've NEVER done before):
New York Islanders: Finally improved, legit contenders? Or same ole same ole Isles?
Nashville Predators: What will it take to take them to that next level of being Cup Champs?
St. Louis Blues: Can they FINALLY take that next step and succeed in the playoffs?

I REALLY want to start up myself a new GM mode, but haven't the slightest clue as to who I want to do.
My probable top 3 would have to be(Teams I've NEVER done before):
New York Islanders: Finally improved, legit contenders? Or same ole same ole Isles?
Nashville Predators: What will it take to take them to that next level of being Cup Champs?
St. Louis Blues: Can they FINALLY take that next step and succeed in the playoffs?

Do the Preds, I don't think I have seen anyone post them on here.

Shakedown underway in Nashville

Nashville Predators GM David Poille has decided to step down from the GM position, as he intends on retiring in a few years. It's being reported he'll stay on as President of Hockey Operations and will see that the new GM is well equipped for the job.

New GM hired to take on the job as GM is GAMO1992. He is former GM of the Kitchener Rangers.

Poile: "I felt it was time for me to take a step back and alleviate a lot of the pressures from my back. I hired GAMO because he's just what this organization needs. Fresh blood, youthful enthusiasm. The loyal Predator fans deserve a fresh face.

Rules:
1. I am unable to trade picks away that are more than 3 years away.
2. All difficulties must be on HARD, GM firing ON. Salary cap ON.
3. No trading up for any of the top 3 picks, no trading up if I have the 2nd or 3rd ovr as well.
4. Similar to DanielPalfredsson I will be using the Yes or No random answer generator at the start of each season for pending UFA's.
5. Again similar to DanielPalfredsson, I will be using his rule of giving out my own NMC to top flight players or limited NTC's to top 9 players. I will also try and honor all current NMC's and NTC's as best I can.
6. I must also stay 5% under the salary cap.

Owner wants at least 44 wins this season, and Conference Semi's.

Turmoil In Nashville?

filip_forsberg_nashville_102114.jpg

Part 1: Introduction http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showpost.php?p=104007763&postcount=934

Rumor has it that the recent news about the change in the guard has made some players on the roster sour; most notably is young star winger Filip Forsberg. Soon to be an RFA, he has made it clear he intends on not resigning a contract with the Predators. They hold his rights as an RFA.

Other notable players to refuse any contract extensions are D Cody Franson who has made it perfectly clear he wants to test the Free Agent waters. Mike Ribeiro will also not be returning next season. Matt Cullen has expressed his interest in signing elsewhere as well. Young Winger Gabriel Bourque has expressed a desire to play for different team as well. Young goalie prospect and heir apparent to Pekka Rinne Juuse Saros has told management he wants a fresh start elsewhere.

On the positive side, Colin Wilson, Craig Smith, Mike Santorelli, Mike Fisher, and prospect winger Austin Watson have all shown a willingness to renew their contracts with the club.

How will GM GAMO handle the pressure of the players going to FA, along with the added pressure of being a competitive team this season? Only time will tell.

Big Changes Made. Nashville going for it all?

In a shocking turn of events, the Nashville Predators decided it was time to make some changes. After sporting an 11-11-1 record December 1st, some big moves were made, making it clear that the focus was on winning now.

The first trade sent promising prospect goaltender Juuse Saros, Wing prospect Justin Kirkland, and a 2016 3rd round pick sent to Buffalo for LW Matt Moulson(retained 500K) and G Nathan Lieuwen.

:sabres
G Juuse Saros 73 HYB 4 Gold
LW Justin Kirkland 3.5 Gold
3rd 2016
:nashville
LW Matt Moulson(500K retained) 86 SNP
G Nathan Lieuwen

Matt Moulson does have a Limited NTC, but Sabres were dead last in NHL, and we are quite higher, so I think he'd waive to come to a contender.

The 2nd and even more surprising trade was the trading of star winger Filip Forsberg.

:bolts
RW Filip Forsberg 86 PWF 4 Gr
LW Gabriel Bourque 81 TWF 3.5 G
2015 3rd round pick
:nashville
RW Nikita Kucherov 86 SNP 4 Gr
LW Brendan Morrow 81 PWF

NikitaKucherov.jpg

This move has sent waves around league, and the fans of the Predators. Excitement has come over the more casual fan as a couple well known names were added to the roster. But to the more hardcore and loyal fan, this has them worried as now Nashville only has 1 pick in the first 90 selections of this draft.

Current record: 11-11-1
sitting 9th in the West.

The team also signed veteran backstop Tim Thomas to a 1 yr contract.

Neal 88 PWF - Ribeiro 85 PLY - Kucherov 86 SNP
Moulson 86 SNP - Smith 85 TWF - Wilson 84 PWF
Santorelli 84 TWF - Fisher 86 TWF - Stalberg 83 PWF
Nystrom 81 GRN - Gaustad 84 GRN - Cullen 82 TWF
x - Morrow

Josi 86 TWD - Weber 95 DFD
Jones 83 TWD - Franson 84 OFD
Volchenkov 81 DFD - Ellis 83 OFD
x - Bartley

Rinne 91 HYB
Thomas 83 STN

Will these moves pay dividends? Or will it blow up in the face of the rookie GM?

Just before the preseason, I had to make some adjustments for the salary cap. And also, think about the future. McDavid, Wilson last year on their contracts. So I decided to trade Niskanen. Bowey is ready for the NHL. Niskanen dropped from 86 to 85. (5.575M$) 31yo 3 years left.

My Toronto Maple Leafs GM

I am currently early in the 2020-2021 season, I have been building through the draft and prospects in my system for the entire time and have failed to have any success. I have only 2 playoff appearances which were the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, but I was bounced first round both times.

Roster:

Nazem Kadri(86 OA, Age:30)- Dylan Strome(83 OA, Age:23)- William Nylander(83 OA, Age:24)

Logan Brown(83 OA, Age:22)- Frederik Gauthier(86 OA, Age:25)- Dimitri Korolev(80 OA, Age:23)

Pavel Zacha(79 OA, Age:23)- Mike Galchenyuk(81 OA, Age:21)- Casey Bailey(83 OA, Age:28)

Noah Rod(81 OA, Age:24)- Travis Barron(79 OA, Age:22)- Tyler Biggs(80 OA, Age:27)

Morgan Rielly(91 OA, Age:26)- Jake Gardiner(86 OA, Age:30)

Matt Finn(86 OA, Age:26)- Nicolas Meloche(85 OA, Age:23)

Dean Mcdonagh(81 OA, Age:23)- Guy Fleury(77 OA, Age:22)

Jonathan Bernier(87 OA, Age:32)- Antoine Bibeau(83 OA, Age:26)

Notable Prospects:

RW Preston Almond(71 OA, Age:19)
LW Wade Adamski(74 OA, Age:20)
LW Tony Benson(78 OA, Age:22)
RW Aaron Roloson(74 OA, Age:20)
RW Mike Demarchi(68 OA, Age:19)
D Rickard Bergenheim(76 OA, Age:21)
D Austin Brodziak(72 OA, Age:20)
LW Teemu Tuppurainen(70 OA, Age:20)
RW Rod Lawrence(69 OA, Age:19)
C Alex DeBrincat(77 OA, Age:22)
C Kailer Yakamoto(76 OA, Age:22)
G Greg Dwyer(61 OA, Age:17)

Update: Leafs finish season with record of 48-29-5 which is their best record since GM DukeChoof took over the job, things may now be headed in the right direction.

Update: Leafs defeated 4-1 by the Panthers in the opening round, veterans will be dealt at draft.

The Leafs have been offered Oscar Dansk (88 OA, Age:27) for Kadri and a 2021 3rd on the draft floor. DONE DEAL, making Bernier expendable

The Leafs have traded Bernier, A.Hendricks, 2022 2nd, 2022 3rd to San Jose for top RHD prospect Adam Sakic (86 OA Age:22)

Somewhere in Quebec.
Winds of change, there's a storm brewing, a new era.
HurricanesLogo-250x250_2013.jpg

Long time GM Jim Rutherford has stepped down, and former Hurricane Ron Francis is tasked with rebuilding the struggling franchise. Cup winners almost 10 years ago, the team has made the playoffs once since, going to the Conference Finals.

The outlook for this season is bleak, the roster is bare, and it lacks depth. There's big time fire power upfront in the likes of Skinner and Staal, but no supporting cast. On the back, Justin Faulk is alone to log big minutes and shutdown the opposition. In goal, an aging Cam Ward is left to face many shots, with little support most nights. That's how we see things. Thankfully, Ron Francis is the man with a plan.

"I won't lie. Our fans aren't stupid. Right now we suck,we have to be honest. We cannot win a cup with our current roster, and few people on this team can succeed in this environment. We need to rebuild, yes it's going to be long and painful, but it's a must. I beleive that we can build around certain players on this team. We're going to have a new identity. We want speed and skill through our roster. We will be a puck possession team. We're going to be hard working and hard to play against. I want all the GM's to know that I'm open for business, we have some untouchables, after that everyone is available. We'll listen on everyone. If you're not listening you aren't doing your job." -Ron Francis, Hurricanes GM

It is believed that Jeff Skinner and Justin Faulk are the Canes untouchables, both are great skaters and highly skilled, they are of embodiment of what the Canes wish to be.

GM Francis was busy on his first day in office, he made a quartet of moves, in a effort to bolster the roster.

Trades:
To San Jose
F Zach Boychuck 78ovr
F Phil DiGiuseppe 60ovr
To Carolina
D Scott Hannan
013113_boychuk.jpg

"Zach is a guy who needs a fresh start, he's not a fit here. Scott is a veteran leader who will help our young players through tough times, and he will make Cam's nights easier as he is a big shot blocker."
To Carolina
D Keith Aulie 78 ovr
To Edmonton
D Brett Bellemore 76ovr
D Michael Jordan 74ovr
D Dwyane Robertson 72ovr
"Keith is a young physical defenceman who can play on the PK and who likes to block shots, he adds some grit at the back, which we lack."

"Our trades today were about shuffling the deck, we wanted to open some space on the roster in Charlotte and we wanted to add a couple of D who can contribute this year."

Signings
C Dave Steckel 78ovr 1yr 800k
D Kevin Gravel 72 ovr 3yr 850k
220px-Dave_Steckel.jpg

"Dave is an experienced center who is very skilled at face offs, he will be able to mentor our young centers in that department while being able to win key draws for us. Kevin's a young D who just left Havard, he wanted to turn pro and he chose to sign here. He's a physical defensive defenceman who skates well, he's a few years away from the roster but we beleive he will play in the NHL some day for us."

[June 5, 2017]
After battling serious health problems, Chuck Fletcher officially resigns as Wild GM. At a press conference, an emotional Fletcher announces he will be resigning as the GM of the 2016 Stanley Cup winning Minnesota team, two years after being diagnosed with cancer.
"I'm thankful of the Wild organization for supporting me through this difficult time over the past two years," said Fletcher. "I'm resigning as GM because I want to spend as much time as I can with my family, as I don't know if or when the cancer will return. I'm proud of what I've accomplished in my time, especially winning the Stanley Cup, as the GM of this remarkable team. Thank you."

The new GM will be a familiar face. Immediately after the resignation of Fletcher, the Wild announced that John Smith [clever, aren't I?] will be the next GM. Smith served as an assistant to Fletcher the past three years, and was instrumental in a couple monumental decisions in that time. Smith convinced Fletcher to draft the 74th ranked Meier 64th overall in the 2015 draft, and the high risk high reward move of trading several picks, that were acquired after the Dubnyk and Pominville deals, to trade up for the 10th pick [2016] to draft Vancouver Giants star forward Tyler Benson. Smith also acted as GM during the 2016-2017 trade deadline when Fletcher was in the hospital for treatment. Smith traded a 2018 first, 2017 second (from Chicago), struggling forward Coyle, and 3.5* prospect Mills to Dallas in exchange for superstar Jamie Benn and a fourth in 2017.

"I would like to thank the Wild organization for naming me as GM. I will try my best to uphold the winning culture that this team has created over the last few years," said Smith. "More importantly, I want to thank my good friend Chuck for what he has taught me, and I hope he will have a long life ahead of him despite the health concerns. He's a good father, husband, GM, and someone I'm proud to call my friend."

Smith signed a 3-year deal with the Wild, and will make his debut as GM at the upcoming draft [2017].
