Gonna start a GM. What team hasn't been done in a while? Does anybody mind me starting at the 2014 draft? I find that really fun for some reason

I haven't seen anyone do St. Louis or New York Isles in a while.
and 2014 draft would be cool! especially if you throw yourself in the draft, to make it more interesting ;)

Isles sound interesting. I think i'll go with them.

I've added Eichel, Hanifin, and Werenski to the game. I'll be starting at the 2014 draft. I was thinking about posting a three times a season with draft/FA, a full regular season report, then the playoff report. Does that sound good with everyone?

2014 Draft recap on the way!

You know, I don't think the RFA's counted towards the yes or no rule but uh, suit yourself

I did it to make it more of a challenge. Its just so easy to sign your good young players in this game longterm at such a discounted price. This way, just like some players in real life, they might not want to stay on.

SportJohnny's GM Mode: Before We Begin...

kekalainen_jarmo640.jpg

Jarmo Kekalainen announced he would step down as general manager and will move to an advisor role yesterday. Executive Sport Johnny takes over the job.

Settings/Rules

GM Firing: On
Trade Difficulty: Hard
Draft Picks: Authentic

-If fired from my team, I must pick a new team to manage.
-Have to do what the owner wants me to do.
-Cannot trade for superstar players or prospects without overpaying. (for example, if trading for the 2015 1st overall pick, a base would have to include Ryan Johansen and my 1st for that year)
-Players who are wavier eligible must be sent down once waviers are on for the season. (sometime during first week of October)
-At the beginning of the season, I will name 2 upcoming UFA's who I will sign without using a yes/no generator. The rest of the UFA's that I want to keep will be determined by using a yes/no generator. If the player says no, they must be released, but I can still go after them in free agency.

Thanks to danielpalfredsson as a base for my rules. :handclap:

2014-2015 Free Agents

Also like danielpalfredsson, I dropped multiple UFA's from other teams who likely will not re-sign with their teams. This allows the team's to have more cap room at the beginning of the season so contracts will not shrink. Towes' and Kane's contracts will be around $10.5 million instead of $7.5-8 million because of this. The players who I dropped are:

-Belesky ANA
-Campbell, Paille, Soderberg, McQuade, Bartkowski BOS
-Vermette, Timonen, Oduya, Richards CHI
-Sekera, Williams, McBain LA
-Stewart MIN
-Gonchar, Weaver MON
-Franson, Ribiero NSH
-St.Louis NYR
-Condra OTT
-Coliacavo, White PHI
-Martin, Erhoff, Winnik PIT
-Niemi, Scott SJ
-Jokinen, Goc, Michalek, Jackman STL
-Morrow TB
-Booth, Orr, Brewer, TOR
-Green, Ward, Gleason WSH
-Pardy, Stafford, Budaj WIN

I edited players from each team to make them better or worse. I changed 2015 draft prospects potential and overall and also added Eichel and Hanifin. I also changed most team's top prospects potential and overall to make them better. Obviously knowing Columbus's prospects better than any other team, I edited most of their prospects. Because of laziness :)sarcasm:) I didn't write down any of the edits I made. I'll make each post one season, starting at the draft/free agency and going all the way to the end of Columbus's season. Hope you guys enjoy my GM mode!

Limping Preds Make Playoffs

Despite multiple injuries to key players for periods of time, and mighty struggles from G Pekka Rinne the Predators have managed to clinch a playoff spot. Riding on the back of G Tim Thomas the Predators astounded many, going from a team barely holding onto the last wildcard spot in December to firmly holding down the 3rd divisional spot in the Central, the Predators have gone on an historic run throughout the months of January to March.

Also at the trade deadline the Preds made 1 trade:
:nashville
D Andrej Meszaros
:sabres
D Mattias Ekholm 78 TWD 3.5 G
and 2 4th round draft picks.

Andrej is also willing to accept a new deal with the club should they want him back.

2014 Draft Recap
18916139099_346dcde385_b.jpg

The Islanders trade up to draft huge power forward Mikael Johansson from Sweden

Trades:

:isles
EDM 1st round pick 2014 (#3)

:edmonton
NYI 1st round pick 2014 (#5)
MTL 2nd round pick 2014 (#57)
NYI 3rd round pick 2016
Cal Clutterbuck (82, GRN, 3.5, 26YO)

"We have our eye on a specific player that won't make it to our pick. Our scouts love the guy. Cal is a great player, but we have some cap issues and Cal's cap hit was too high for our liking."

:isles
DAL 5th round pick 2015 (#135)

:stars
NYI 5th round pick 2016
NYI 7th round pick 2014

"Once again our scouts found a guy they really like. They've got a good feeling about him."

Draft Picks:
18915448740_5381ef139b_c.jpg

The Islanders draft small Finnish winger Alexi Mustonen in the 2nd round

Round | Pick | Player | Overall | Potential | Age | Position | Player Type
1|3|Mikael Johansson|65| 4.5 |19|LW|PWF
2|35|Alexi Mustonen|68| 4 |19|LW|PLY
3|65|Gustav Backstrom|63| 4 |19|D|TWD
3|78|Rene Piegl|60| 3.5 |19|D|TWD
4|108|Andrei Spiller|69| 3.5 |18|LW|SNP
4|118|Viacheslav Samsonov|61| 3.5 |19|LW|PWF
5|135|Henrik Haapala|65| 4 |20|RW|TWF
6|155|Michael Fora|57| 3.5 |18|D|TWD
7|185|Daniel Guntern|68| 3 |19|G|BUT

"We are really excited about Mikael. He's huge at 6'3 and he's a very talented two-way player. He will be a very valuable player for us in the future. After going with size in the first, we took a gamble on Alexi. He's tiny at 5'8, but we don't see that as an issue. If things go right, he can be a top 9 scorer. Andrei is a talented sniper who isn't far away from the NHL. Henrik is a small but feisty two-way winger. we see him as a 3rd line energy type player. We were excited to grab him in the 5th round."

Free Agency:
18917013419_b423cab35a_c.jpg

The Islanders sign Swedish prospect Marcus Pettersson to an ELC

Player | Overall | Potential | Age | Position | Player Type
Marcus Pettersson|59| 3.5 |18|D|TWD
Kevin Gravel|72| 3.5 |22|D|DFD

"Marcus is a project with lots of potential who we will be patient with. Kevin is a mean and tough defensive defenseman that our prospect pool lacks. Both will suit up for Bridgeport this coming season."

Blues fire Doug Armstrong, hire Brett Hull as the new GM.

The lack of playoff success is the most likely reason for Armstrong being fired. In 6 years as GM, the Blues have only made it past the first round once, haven't gotten past the second round, and have missed the playoffs twice. The Blues have never won a Stanley Cup, despite making 3 trips to the Finals in their first 3 seasons.

Oddly enough, this is the second time that Brett Hull is taking Doug Armstrong's job. Brett Hull also took over the job as the Stars GM after Armstrong was fired. Hull spent more than 10 seasons with the Blues as a player in the late 80's and 90's. Hull lead the stars to the Western Conference finals in the 2008 playoffs, but missed the playoffs next season, which lead to his firing.

The Blues have a crowded forward situation, but have a strong Defense, and decent goaltending.

Projected Lines:

Trade Deadline 2015
1280x800_11-12Caneslogo.jpg

The Carolina Hurricanes are expected to be busy at this year's deadline, where it is expected that they will deal goaltender Anton Khudobin.

Eric Staal is another name who could be moved, as the rebuilding Hurricanes would like to gain some asserts.

One GM we spoke to addressed the possible return on Staal: "His contract is going to hurt him, 8.25 is a lot for a guy who puts up around 60 pts. Granted he's on a bad team. I think the ball park for him is a first and a roster player, but if Carolina wants to retain some of his contract, the return will go up." -Rival GM.

Our insiders believe that veteran D man Scott Hannan could be moved in order to give him a shot at the cup. Hannan is 36 and this could be his final season.

We have just received news of a Canes trade:
khudobinzoom092313.jpg

"Anton Khudobin has been traded to Nashville. Stay tuned for details." -Pierre McGuire

So there you have it, our first Canes move. Mark, you've played for the Canes, and with former Cane Rod Brind'Amour, tell us about the direction you think the team is headed in, what comes next here ?

Mark Recchi: Well I think the first step is to wipe the slate clean. Then you want to acquire some assets, be it draft picks or prospects. They want to go with speed and skill, and they'll look for guys who fit that mould."

Thanks Mark, we've just received word of a another Canes trade.

"Scott Hannan to Boston, also apparently Anaheim has made a big push for Eric Staal. The return on the Khudobin deal is Carter Hutton, 2nd and 3rd round picks in this year's draft."

So a second trade for the Hurricanes today. It's been rumoured that GM Ron Francis is hesitant to move out the Staal's. Mark Recchi joins us today to provide analysis on the Hurricanes deadline deals. Mark, thoughts on the moves today:

Mark Recchi: The return on Khudobin is great, Nashville is a contending team and they aren't sure that Rinne will be healthy in time for the playoffs, Khudobin is an upgrade on Hutton and he can play down the stretch. Canes do a good job-.
AllStarEricStaalImage2.JPG

Pierre: Eric Staal has been traded to Anaheim, also the Hannan deal sees Kevan Miller and a 7th in this year's draft go to Carolina. Eric Staal is going to Anaheim and it's a little tricky. Carolina retains 2M of Staal's 8.25 salary, the return is Patrick Maroon, Anaheims first this year and their first next year. Blockbuster deal.

Wow, that's a massive deal. The rebuild is in full swing, Mark Recchi and Pierre will breakdown the deal, we will try to get a hold of Ron Francis.

Pierre: Canes are done dealing for the day. This is a great move for Anaheim, Staal will really fit in with thier group. He's another big skilled guy, that first line is something else.

Mark: The Canes get a great return, obviously the picks will be late picks, but you're adding a roster player, and 2 good assests for a guy who hasn't lived up to his assets.

We've got word from one GM on the deal: "Anaheim got a hell of a player. Can't say I'd want to face then in the playoffs. The return is a fair price. I think the Ducks win big here because Maroon moving out means they're only taking on 4.25M in cap space. They'll be a force.

Ron Francis joins us.
Ron big day for us:
R.F: Yes, phones were ringing all day. We've made some progress in getting to our ultimate goal.
Ron talk about the Staal trade.
R.F: He's a great player. Lots of interest, wanted to move him out west and to contender. The 2 1sts will help us long term. Pats a fast gritty guy."
Ron do you see yourself moving one of those firsts ?
R.F: You never know but it's unlikely.
Thanks Ron, Ron Francis just joined us to close out of Carolina Hurricanes deadline day coverage.

Thanks for tuning in.

Free Agency and Trades

Free Agents Signed

Player | Position | Contract | Potential | Overall | Age
Andrei Lokitonov | Center | 2 years, $0.775 AAV | 3.5 | 80 | 24
Kevin Gravel | Defenseman | 2 years, $0.800 AAV | 3.5G | 72 | 22

Both of these guys are young and can help us now and in the future. Lokitonov will get a chance to play in NHL with us this season as a depth player. Gravel will get time to season his defensive game in the AHL. We are very high on him.

Trades

:cbj

D Jan Hejda, 83 overall, 36 years old, $3.250 AAV for 1 year

:avs

C Mark Letestu, 82 overall, 29 years old, $1.250 AAV for 1 year
2016 3rd round pick (CBJ)

Our defense was not as deep as we would have liked. Letestu is a great player, but he did not fit into our plans. Hejda will bring veteran leadership for our young guys on defense and is a serviceable top 4 defenseman.

2014-2015 Regular Season

Owner's Expectation

I realize we did not have enough funds to pick up free agents because of some of the contracts we currently have on board. I still think we have a very competitive team that can make a run for a playoff spot. However, we are focused on the long term of our organization, and a playoff spot is something that I'd be happily surprised to get. I'm hoping to get 40 wins this season.

TRADE ALERT

Witha 17-14-4 record, the Blue Jackets were only 4 points of a playoff spot come January. With the bottom pairing being the worst plus/minus (David Savard -10, Kevin Connauton -11) a trade with the Nashville Predators was made.

Anton Volchenkov was acquired to hopefully stabilize a struggling bottom pairing.

:cbj

D Anton Volchenkov 81 overall, 32 years ol, $1 million AAV for one year
2016 3rd round pick (NSH)

:nashville

D Kevin Connauton 80 overall, 24 years old, 3.5 gold stars, $0.650 million AAV for one year

We wanted to bring in a veteran defensive defenseman to this team. Volchenkov is cheap and exactly what we needed. We had to part away with Connauton, but we feel he needed a better opportunity elsewhere.

Trade Deadline

Record:
27-26-9, 63 Points, 8 points out of a playoff spot.

Injuries hit the team hard over the next couple months, injuring Scott Hartnell, Brandon Dubinsky, and Jack Johnson. These loses were big enough to drop Columbus into a deeper hole. The team also heard that upcoming UFA's Jan Hejda and Anton Volchenkov would not re-sign with the team. General Manager Sport Johnny was able to trade Hejda to Stanley Cup contenders in the Pittsburgh Penguins for a draft pick. The team held on to Volchenkov because they wouldn't be able to get a great return on him and needed the depth.

GM Danielpalfredsson has agreed to a 4 year extension with the Ottawa Senators. Winning the cup in his final year as GM made GM Danielpafredsson a hot property around the league. Multiple teams came calling, but it seems as if Danielpalfredsson sees himself as a Senator at heart.

Earlier in the year, Eugene Melnyk (known for his penny pinching ways) was initially offering boxes of old Dany Heatley shirjseys and his least favourite racing horse as a signing bonus if GM Danielpalfredsson agreed to stay on with the Senators.

After seeing his Senators win the cup, Mr.Melnyk's wallet grew three times in size, and he gladly offered GM Danielpalfredsson an extension where he'd be paid in real currency and not former player merchandise.

NHL ENTRY DRAFT: Jared Cowen Crowned King

TRADE WITH LA
Jared Cowen 84oa 4.5R 26yo top 4 D (RFA Rights)
For
The 12th overall selection Bjorn Graps (19yo 3.5G)

Ottawa's internal budget has afforded the LA Kings an easy solution to fixing their top 4 D. Jared Cowen, an RFA asking between 4 and 5 million on a long term deal was dealt to the Kings who are now expected to sign him to an extension.

The King's gave up the 11th overall pick, which the Senators used to select German born defender Bjorn Graps. Graps is a big strong stay at home defender who is seen as a safe pick and a surefire future bottom pairing defender who has a small shot at becoming a top pairing LD to play alongside Karlsson. He is seen as a safe but unspectacular pick.

Cowen should solidify the King's second pairing, and help them get over the hump and back into the Stanley Cup playoffs. For the Kings, Cowen presents a great quick fix to their D problems.

It has been speculated that Ottawa has traded Cowen as a result of their willingness to extend Duncan Keith. The Senators cannot afford to keep both players.

Shortly after the trade took place, it was revealed that LA had extended Cowen to a 3 year 4.8M contract.

-Pageau 81oa 4th Line C 3 year 1.2M
-Prince 83oa 3rd Line LW SNP 2 year 1.9
-Duncan Keith 88oa top 2 LTWD 1 year 6.6 Full NTC
-Lehner 84oa backup goalie 4 years 1.8M
______________________________

HERE AND THERE
-Karlsson wins the Norris trophy for the third season in a row.
-Andrew Hammond and Duncan Keith will test the market next year. Cizikas is open to an extension.
______________________________

KYLE TURRIS TO RETIRE A SENATOR?
The Senators have inked their franchise forward and first line center Kyle Turris to a massive 7 year extension. This extension will see Turris who is 28 years old remain with the Senators until the age of 35. Turris is seen as a consistent 20 goal 60 point number 1 center who exhibits great two way play.

With players often regressing in their early to mid 30's, this extension could prove risky for the Senators. As a first liner, Turris gets a full no trade clause, so if his level of play plummets, the Senators will have no way to get out of his 5.3M cap hit.

The team could have signed Turris to a shorter deal, but it would have cost them significantly more money per year, and with an internal budget set 10 percent below the cap and a desire to repeat as Stanley Cup champion, the Senators felt the best course of action was to take a risk that might not hurt them until 5 years down the road.

TRADING PRIVATE RYAN?
There has been some chatter coming out of Ottawa that Bobby Ryan might be traded next season.

Word is that the team would like to take one last shot at winning the cup with their current core, but they are aware that they will have to go through a short re-tooling period as a result of both budget concerns, and older players regressing.

Next year, Travis Konecny comes off of his ELC deal and will likely be in a position to command somewhere between 5-7 million dollars on a long term extension. The Senators know that they cannot keep Duncan Keith after this season and stay within their budget, hence why he was signed to only a one year extension.

Bobby Ryan will be 31 next season and will still have 4 years left on a 7.2M per contract. If the Senators wish to trade Ryan, as per his modified NTC, Ryan can provide a list of 10 teams that he wishes to be traded to.

**If I trade Ryan, because he has a real life NTC, I'll use a randomizer to get the 10 teams he'd like to go to and try and trade him to one of those teams.

OFF SEASON TRADES
PRINCE SENT TO DALLAS-OTTAWA ACQUIRES COVETED THIRD LINE POWER FORWARD
The Senators swapped Shane Prince and a third round pick with the Dallas Stars for Brett Ritchie. Ritchie is a big physical power forward. Ritchie is great offensively, but his lack of speed has prevented him from becoming a top 6 mainstay in the NHL. Ottawa will likely expect him to play on the Cizikas line and provide a physical edge for the team. Prince is a forward with top 6 potential, but his time is running out, and he wasn't likely to leapfrog over Hoffman and Puempel in Ottawa.
______________________________
EDMONDS WINS BINGHAMTON STARTER SPOT-DREIDGER SENT TO ST.LOUIS
With Ty Edmonds performing well at training camp and set to take over as Binghamton's starter, the Senators made an AHL trade. Former third round draft pick G Chris Dreidger was sent to the St.Louis Blues for former 2017 81st overall pick Braden Purtill 71oa 3.5* 21yo and a St.Louis 4th rounder.

Purtill is seen as a long shot of ever making the NHL. There was very little market for Dreidger as most teams have goalies of similar talent in the pipeline.
______________________________
EDMONTON OILERS FINALLY GET A STARTING GOALIE
After refusing an extension, Andrew Hammond 85oa starting goalie was traded to the Oilers for a 2nd and a 4th round pick in the upcoming draft. With plenty of cap space, and no starting goalie, the Oilers have a great chance of retaining Hammond as a long term solution to their long standing goalie issues.

Despite winning a cup with Hammond, the view within the team was that aside from the first round, Hammond had an awful inconsistent post season, and had they not pulled him in the Toronto series, they would have lost the cup. The feeling is that they won the cup in spite of Hammond, and not because of him, and that if Lehner preforms poorly during the season, they can address their need for a goalie come the deadline.

Shortly after trading Hammond, it was announce that the Senators had signed veteran backup Jonas Gustavvson 82oa to a one year 1.3M contract. Gustavsson was demoted to the AHL last year, but had a great AHL season putting up a .926 save percentage over 26 games and a .935 save percentage over 7 playoff games.
______________________________

BUDGET TROUBLES AHEAD? WILL OTTAWA HAVE TO ABANDON THIS LINE UP AND RE-TOOL?
11 members of Ottawa's 23 player NHL roster are on the final year of their contract. Of those 11, almost half are coming off of cheap bridge or ELC contracts. Konecny, Karlsson, Gravel, Ritchie, Cizikas, and Lazar are all likely to command raises.

Other than Nick Paul (22yo C) and Andreas Englund (21yo LD) the Senators prospect pool features very few players who could conceivably make the jump to the NHL next year.

With an internal budget set at 10 percent below the NHL max salary cap, will the Senators chances at winning with this core be over as soon as next year? Will they have to sell off expensive talent for picks and prospects with the hope that they can re-tool and be ready to compete a few seasons down the road?

FORWARD PREVIEW
Very little has changed for Ottawa's forward lineup.

The line up is exactly the same, minus one trade. With the Dallas Stars seeking a sniper to play alongside Spezza, Prince was swapped for the bigger right handed power forward Brett Ritchie. Ritchie is touted as one of the most offensively intelligent power forward in the NHL, but his lack of speed has prevented him from cracking Dallas' top 6. He's often criticized for his poor defensive play. He is a very strong and physical player, which is what Ottawa felt was missing from their bottom 6.

The major story of Ottawa's offensive core is that Konency is in the final year of his ELC deal and will be looking to improve on his 57 points he put up last year. The Senators will have to decide between offering Konecny a bridge deal in an attempt to keep their budget in check, or exploring the possibility of signing Konecny to a long term deal. Konecny still pencils in as the number 2 center behind Kyle Turris.
______________________________

DEFENSE PREVIEW
Despite budget issues, the Senators were able to put together a defensive core that is on par with the one that won them the cup last year. With raises to many key players, the team was unable to keep Jared Cowen and remain within their budget. Cowen's RFA rights were traded to the LA Kings at the draft in exchange for the 12th overall pick.

The Senators hardly feel that the loss of Cowen will hurt their D core this year. Despite his age, Methot is still going strong. Kevin Gravel also made immense strides during the summer and came to camp looking like he was ready to step up and play top 4 minutes.

Gravel will likely be stuck on Ottawa's bottom shutdown pairing this season, but with LD Duncan Keith potentially in his final year as a Senator, and :LD Marc Methot hitting 33 years of age next off season, don't be surprised to see Gravel extended long term and leap frog on to Ottawa's top pairing beside Karlsson.

GOALIE PREVIEW
Hammond being moved was shocking, the Senators just won a cup with him as their starter. The reality is, had Lehner not been injured against Toronto, he would have been given the chance to start for game 7 of that series and beyond. Hammond was benched after allowing 10 goals in the first two games of the Toronto series. After Lehner was injured, Hammond came up strong in game 7 against Toronto which bought him some goodwill, but most of that goodwill was evaporated as Ottawa was forced to win the cup in spite of Hammonds inconsistent play throughout the ECF and SCF.

Lehner isn't seen as a huge upgrade, but with Hammond refusing an extension, the Senators feel they have nothing to lose by riding Lehner into at least the trade deadline. If needed, the team is open to acquiring a rental in net, but the feeling is if they won with Hammond last year, they can win with Lehner this year.

The Senators are very enthused by Ty Edmonds (80oa 4*) progression. Edmonds accomplished a .917 save percentage over 19 games as the Binghamton Senators backup last year. At the age of 21, Edmonds looks to take over as Binghamton's starter.

Don't expect to see Ottawa look for a long term solution in net via trade as the Senators see Edmonds as their goalie of the future, and think he could win an NHL job in training camp as soon as next season.
