Really? I worry about his skating at Center since it's just fine & he's not exactly a speed demon; and have similar concerns about the greater responsibilities against the puck at Center taking away from his creativity with it. I'd want him to have the puck on his stick a lot despite playing on the wing, a la Mikko, Tanguay or Jost; but I have more concerns about him being allowed to just go out there & create if he's developed as a center.

Or do you think that playing off the boards rather than through the middle would take away too much ice for him to bring all of his offensive potential to bare from the wing?

Yeah... I think the skating is plenty fine to play center and he’s shown the defensive ability at lower levels (he’s actually played games at the junior level on defense and done quite well... I’ve seen one we’re he double shifted between forward and defense). But the puck on the stick part is where I really stick to it. He needs to be the guy with the puck on his line. In NA that is mostly the center and limiting that would be bad for his style of play. Even Rants isn’t the guy on his line and never will be... Shvy should be developed at center first and foremost.

This has been a great start to the offseason!

I haven't seen him play personally, but based on his numbers and what has been said here he has a decent talent level.

So what are we expecting here? AHL only since he wasn't drafted by a CHL team?

His numbers are just absurd. He had one of the greatest MHL seasons of all time the year we drafted him & was a big game or two away from PPG in his original draft year...~PPG being the range where first-round Russian prospects land in their draft years.

He said in that eurolanche interview that he'd go to the CHL, but I think he's ready for Loveland and a scoring role for that team makes the most sense as a starting point...and his play there will determine how high on the call-up list he lands whenever injuries start to hit us.

Do we know why he only had 1 goal and 0 assist in 32 game in the KHL last year?

I know there are some games he didn't play much.

I wonder when @cgf will come?

Phrasing?

I was reading his prospect thread on here and someone mentioned he only played 3 minutes a game. Assuming that’s true that would make sense.

Oh, I like his defensive game, kid's smart & his nasty hands work on both ends of the ice; I just would rather let him focus on what he can do with the puck than burden him with excess responsibility against it. We have enough other players that are good against the puck but can't do what he can with it, ya know?

I agree he needs to be the guy on his line who dominates the puck, but I guess I just don't understand the nuances of hockey tactics enough to see why Shvyryov couldn't do that while having the lighter defensive responsibilities of a wing...a la Duchene when he played with ROR, or MacKinnon a good chunk of the time this year. Now I realize both of those avs that filled the kind of role I'm describing where centers, either completely or nominally, but they're recent avs examples of players having that split between winger-duties defensively & center-duties offensively; around the league we've got similar dynamics at play with guys officially labelled wingers with the likes of Hall, Gaudreau, Kucherov out there weaving magic for their linemates.

As for Mikko, he dominated the puck for his line in NA with the Rampage & had the puck on his stick a lot as a rookie...things changed after MacK went super-saiyan, but before that we were all excited for having Mikko pulling the strings for his line the way Voracek does when not playing with Giroux.

I guess I'm not really opposed to letting Shvyry stay at center in the AHL, especially if it helps ease the transition for him; but I still think that he's a safer bet to become a difference maker in the NHL as a puck-dominant winger than a true center :dunno:
Mironov isn't really a bust, he just didn't want to spend the time to adjust to the NA style of game.

I dunno man, I had hoped that maybe there was something in his skating that could be tweaked to make him more fluid, but he just looked stiffer than any av I've seen in years. Unless that was why he was so worried by our Masseur situation, I just don't think that even getting a better sense for timing & angles on the smaller ice would've made him a success.

Pretty much what you just said, was relegated to a 4th line role/nacho eater that maybe saw 5 minutes a game. It was stupid, I can see why he was interested in moving to the US.

Their loss, our gain, I guess. Very interested in what this guy can bring. He has 1st round draft pick skills, can it translate to the NHL, thats tough to say. But as a 5th round pick, anything we get from him is just a bonus.

Very happy about this signing.

Most of those games he only took a handful of shifts, as the KHL lets you dress more than 18 skaters...spots often used on kids that aren't quite ready, or PP-/PK-specialists.

E: and I see this has already been answered extensively

Should we just call this thread "cgf's baby" or should we save that for the thread dedicated to french-Nic's NHL debut?

Definitely want to see him in the AHL. He's played against men already in the KHL, so he knows what to expect physically. And it will be a good place to showcase his skills and grow that side of his game with heavy minutes.

Unexpected and exciting. I really hope that he's willing to stick it out in the AHL until he's ready for the big leagues and that he doesn't get pissy like Mironov did.

I guess it comes down to whether or not a 70 y/o male masseuse is a deal breaker.

I think the biggest difference here is that he wasn’t getting minutes there.

Here, he’s going to get to play.

He did an interview with Eurolanche and seemed more than willing to play wherever to be able to get to the NHL.
