It's not even all that I just think this team can legit hang with any team that is full capacity. The difference in "talent" from bottom teams and top teams is in a lot of ways minimal or watered down at this point. They are world class athletes and it's a game of bounces. The difference between bottom teams and top teams is consistency, depth, leadership, and coaching. Even a one trick pony team csn have a few lucky bounces, or a single star player steal a game here and there against a "superior" team. This group of young players and this organization as a whole needs to have the mentality that one way or another we can win tonight. We might not be top to bottom as talented or as sexy on paper but a win is possible. I find no joy in matthews being out a month or boeser out a game. If I'm gonna win I want it to be because we beat the other team with them on the ice. I want to play price and run up 6 goals on him etc. This young team needs those kinds of wins, not we got 2 from an injury depleted squad who thought so little of us they dressed their backup. Losing mentality is contagious and stuff like that works in the minds of players.
So you'd rather get 89 points and miss the playoffs by a point playing teams at their full than have 91 points and make the playoffs by beating Vancouver without Boeser today? I get what you're thinking, but points are what's needed. Not moral victories.
You sound a bit like the players after games the past few years. F that. Give me points and playoffs and big shiny. Do you REALLY think Carolina cares that they barely beat us down 5 defensemen in the conference finals and then went on to win the Cup over the joke of an Edmonton team? I highly doubt it ever crosses THEIR minds. Only ours.
Until the Sabres continue to beat backups with regularity, they will see a lot of them. Once they do, teams will adjust. Schedule also has a part to play in it, but that's out of anyone's control. Price has been refried shit the past year+. Putting 6 on him(in OT) doesn't really say all that much. You kind of contradicted yourself as well. If teams are so even skill wise, then why would it matter if stars are missing from a lineup? You put the onus on coaching, consistency, leadership, and depth. (though depth is a product of skill, and therefore not logical to put on the other side of that ledger) Why would backups matter if you make this claim?
And finally you talk about a losing mentality. Wouldn't winning at all costs against any type of opponent be the most important factor in that? Not supposed "better" victories? It isn't often said that a team has points against xx teams in yy games BUT THOSE TEAMS WEREN'T AT FULL HEALTH! It's just results.
