No offence but you are significantly undervaluing several players here. Johnsson and Kapanen are excellent 2way play driving wingers signed to excellent contracts. Both have value at 5v5, pp, as well as PK. They're strong second line players by any metric.
I am not undervaluing them. They are not as valuable in the trade market as DeAngelo.

They are actually quite heavily over-valued by a lot of Leafs fans on HFB.

xGF%: 47.14%
SCF%: 45.84%
HDCF%: 47.92%
PDO: 1.027
OZone Start %: 57%

He's heavily sheltered, gets outchanced quite heavily when on the ice (as I said so many times, can't play defense), and is also riding an unsustainable PDO. If there was ever the definition of pump-and-dump, this guy would be the guy. Which is why I can't understand how he's worth anything more than a sheltered PP specialist #5 defenseman.

I know it's a small sample size, but after watching tonight's game against the Rangers, it was very apparent how much they need a solid, two way defensive defenseman. (Or even two!) As DeAngelo and Fox are very similar, and play the same side, wouldn't it make sense to move one of them?

Maybe i,m overvaluing Sandin but he is a LHD stud which we need , ADA and a 3rd ( we do not have a 2nd) to Leafs? You have to give to get.

Leafs need a defensive first RHD.

Sandin cannot be traded as the prospect depth is weaker on defense and his ELC years are needed to manage the cap.

Toronto is much stronger at forward position. A team that has a defensive RHD and would like to acquire young cost controlled forwards would be the perfect partner for Toronto.

Toronto and NY are not good trading partners.

I believe DeAngelo was unwilling to sign long term because he wanted to do exactly what hes doing now - proves hes worth more than they were offering. Part of the reason why hes so cheap this year is because he took the long term option off the table.
Interesting. I hadn't heard that. Have you got a source? Just wondering as the topic was discussed heavily on the Rangers board but I don't remember his unwillingness to discuss a long term deal being mentioned.

Maybe, but the Devils 2nd round pick was, I believe 38th overall, only 7 picks behind the 1st round. That might have been appealing, and I thought they kept Namestnikov until they were sure Strome would work on Panarin's line.
July 1st was after that draft... it would have been 2020, and after Devils made a splash in the offseason. Most probably expected the 2nd at the time to be later.

The Leafs wouldn't want someone of DeAngelo's character with the organization. Nevermind the horrible defensive play.

You seem to know the guy, so why don’t you elaborate on his character?

His defense isn’t horrible. You clearly don’t watch him play very much, if you think that.

His relative GF% and xGF% are positive on a bad team though. I've looked at the relationship between offensive zone start % and CF%, SCF%, xGF% and it's pretty weak. I think the Rangers have no reason to trade him and they probably won't get an offer that makes them want to.

I don't see how he prices himself out unless he is asking for somehting even arbitration is going to laugh at. You get rid of krieder and strome long before ADA.

the actual concern is his defense but even then its not terrible enough to make him not a great #3 dman. fox better doeeee. but for example, deangelo profiles similarly (slightly better offensively and slightly worse defensively) to chabot.

With all due respect, how many games have you watched this season? I only see you citing stats to give this opinion that Fox is so much better than DeAngelo.

You know that Dubas, with Keefe as his coach, traded for DeAngelo when his "character issues" were much more recent than they are now?

He is one of the most popular guys in the Rangers' locker room right now and Strome called him "one of the best teammates I've ever had", so whatever issues there might have been they are irrelevant now.

That said, I'm more than happy to not see the Leafs trade for DeAngelo as I would very much like to keep him.

You're right about that. I remembered that they couldn't sign an offer sheet because they didn't have their second rounder, but I forgot it was because their 2020 2nd round pick was gone, not 2019.
