Only if you build them up to be smarter than everyone else. There's definitely been some fart huffing, as I believe someone put it the other day, on this board. GMs/management groups are going to make some moves that work out, some that don't, and a lot of whatever in between. Their batting average has been fine.
So im not supposed to believe this FO is perfect and the best in the business? Seems unrealistic

Do they have the room in their budget to make a move like that?

Once they trade Konecny to the Canes for a handful of futures and buyout Ghost they may have the space.

They would just need to find a way to slip Slavin in Hamilton's back pocket so he can maintain those defensive metrics that Hedman generates while dragging around guys like Jan Rutta, Erik Cernak, and Kevin Shattenkirk (his 3 most common partners over the past 2 years).

You can certainly make the argument that, in the context of our team, Hamilton adds as much value to our defensive group as Hedman does for Tampa. You can't say, however, that the two players are the same in any way. Hamilton works with one of the better
defensive defensemen in the NHL in Slavin, which allows him to wreak the kind of havoc that he does offensively. Hedman, OTOH, can drag a bottom-pairing partner while still putting up elite two-way metrics. Put even a semi-competent top-4 guy like Shattenkirk next to him and the guy's numbers spike to Best D in the League rates.

He is actually arguably slightly more physical too. (hits 65% more, takes more penalties, not as good on boards.)

hits 65% more: I don’t know where this comes from. Dougie has 39 hits this year and Hedman has 42. Hedman has a slightly lower hits/60 at 2.30 compared to 2.44

takes more penalties: since when do high sticking, hooking and tripping count to make a player more physical?

not as good on boards: agree

With all the Dougie talk, I thought I'd post my thoughts on next season's roster w/some assumptions of re-signings built in:

Svechnikov ($6,500,00) - Aho ($8,454,000) - Teravainen ($5,400,000)
Niederreiter ($5,250,000) - Trocheck ($4,750,000) - Necas ($864,000)
McGinn ($2,500,000) - Staal ($6,000,000) - Fast ($2,000,000)
UFA - $1,000,000) - Lorentz ($725,000) - Geekie ($764,000)
Cotton ($858,750)

Slavin ($5,300,000) - Hamilton ($7,750,000)
Skjei ($5,250,000) - Pesce ($4,025,000)
Hakanpaa ($1,500,000) - Gardiner ($4,050,000)
Bean/UFA ($1,000,000)

Mrazek ($4,500,000)
Nedeljkovic ($2,250,000)

Team salary cap hit: about $80,778,000 ($722,000 cap remaining)

Before I go any further, let me say that I hope and wish that Gardiner gets moved. I also hope/believe that Hamilton will re-sign and Svech will be bridged. If I were GMBC, I'd offer up Foegele, a 2nd round pick in 2021, and a 6th round pick in 2022 for Francis to take Gardiner (probably won't happen, but it is a strategy, given we won't be able to afford both he and McGinn.

Personally, I believe that the front office will not expose Brady Skjei after seeing what he can do this year. If Seattle doesn't bite on the Foegele/Gardiner deal, then I'd leave Jake Bean exposed.

As you can also see, I've bought into the thought that we can only keep 1 of Paquette, Foegele, McGinn, and Martinook. My guess is Rod would choose McGinn and he's likely the most offensively talented of that group.

I can't see Gardiner on the roster next year. If they can't move him some other way, a buyout will add an additional $2.76m in cap space (less his replacement, of course).

I see him on the roster if Skjei is taken by Seattle. Maybe they do a contract-for-contract swap (Okposo + small pick, perhaps?), but if not that, then run some combo of Bean/Gardiner/Lajoie/Sellgren below Slavin until the trade deadline.

I could possibly see that if not for Gardiner's health. I don't see the Canes going into next season depending on Gardiner; way too risky, imo.
