Out of all the potential candidates that will likely be available, Ferland is your “gotta have” guy (and you want to extend him)??

I can think of at least 7/8 players I would rather have.

1) Ferland is a LH LW, the one position the B’s really don’t need to add.

2) He’s in his walk year. Came out like a house on fire with 14 pts in his first 20 games (10g/4a). Last 16 games he has 2g/4a.

3) I think his season last year (21g/20a) is the best you get from him. I like the skill set, but I’m getting a Beleskey-vibe.

Same. Also a Clarkson-type feel.

Trade Watch List: Top 30 — The Fourth Period

2. Jeff Carter – Predators, Bruins, Canadiens and Stars
4. Wayne Simmonds – Stars, Flames, Leafs, Avs, Golden Knights, Oilers, Predators, Bruins and Jets
5. Mats Zuccarello – Golden Knights, Stars, Predators, Avs, Bruins, Leafs, Sabres and Pens
8. Ryan Dzingel – Bruins, Sabres, Penguins, Ducks, Islanders, Sharks, Stars and Avs

9. Alex Edler – Penguins, Maple Leafs, Bruins, Golden Knights and Flames
11. Jake Muzzin – Bruins, Maple Leafs and Jets

13. Tyler Toffoli – Hurricanes and Bruins

Why would the Bruins be looking at Defensemen?

:: Doubletake ::
EDLER?!?!?!
My only thought they'd be looking at defenseman is because they are moving one out to acquire someone else.

One of the proposals someone else made (feel free to take credit for it):
Krug+ for Voracek (or someone of that ilk)
Muzzin for futures

If that were to happen, and we were able to acquire Muzzin, I think we might be a better team overall now and future.

I’ll take credit for it if I see it on Murph’s twitter feed this week.

Chris Kreider would be an awesome addition if there's anyway Sweeney and Gorton could get together on another deal.

Big Dzingel fan, The kid has a lot of skill plays both ends of the ice and comes at abargian for the rest of the year, where you could add him and another piece.

Seen Toffoli a handful of times this year and he just seems disinterested and more than likely would welcome a change of scenery, hopefully that's all it is.

The defenseman are interesting on why they would be on the list, diffidently not a current need at first look but, Perhaps the Bruins could be in talks with someone on packaging a younger d-man or two to help that 2nd line scoring, which in effect would makes sense that they would have interest in experience playoff performers like Muzzin and Martinez.

The one d-man, I'd like to see the Bruins pursue is Klefbom, watched a lot of him and he's a stud, don't now if he would be available but would be a a nice, Chara replacement.

I like Ferland a lot and think he would be a great addition, he is a complimentary player in that he needs to be placed with decent offensive players to produce. He did so with Gaudreau and Monahan last year in Calgary and was doing so this year in Carolina when I was paying attention to them. He is not going to create his own offense but he has a wicked shot and release and is average to a little above in hockey IQ. HE does look to make big hits and take himself out of position with those but I'm ok with that.

The LW left shot is an issue with Marchand and DeBrusk as the top two LW for the foreseeable future, they have tried DeBrusk on RW and I am not a big fan of him playing his off wing. He is physically inconsistent on occasion and not as engaged as I would like all the time (I use the O'Reilly scale though so it really isn't a fair measure) but was a monster a few years ago in the playoffs with Calgary. He can also fight and does so very well.

So what would I do if Donny Danger added him. I would look at it as a step, Schenn needing to be the next. This doesn't fill the 2RW gap but does create three scoring lines.

Heinen (Sorry GD) for Ferland, resign ASAP at 3/4 for 3/4 years. Cap should increase by that amount and so far no one besides Carlo has shown that a huge raise should be awarded to them.

Donato, Nordstrom and Griz for Schenn.

Cherlarik for McQuaid to add D depth.

Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak
DeBrusk-Krejci-Bjork
Ferland-Schenn-Backes
Wagner-Kuraly-Blidh

Not perfect but you might be able to do something in this playoff with that group and if you resign Ferland you build around it next year.

I've done a complete 180 turn on whether or not we should be making a move prior to the deadline. I'm leaning more toward standing pat, or making a small move to solidify a playoff spot. Here's my rationale:

I think the road to the SCF is most likely going through Toronto, Tampa and Washington. I just don't see us getting through all 3 of those teams, even with another Center or top 6 Winger and I don't see us getting equitable long term value by making a deal at the deadline.

Make no mistake. This team needs to make moves to fill some holes, especially on the front end. I just think that doing it over the summer, along with free agency is the better route to take. Not at the deadline. I'd rather ride the squad we have, and take our chances in the playoffs because I don't see a move out there that improves us to the point where we are a legit SCF contender this season. I'm willing to take a longer term view towards 2020-2021, than try to force the issue this season.

I don't know if they'd have the ammo to get both Schenn and Kreider but this forward group can hang with anyone

That's just it...What are you willing to give up to make that move. And please don't tell me that NY or STL would go for a bunch of 3-4th depth players, AHL youth and mid round picks......

How different is signing Ferland to a big money/big term extension than signing Beleskey?

Because I see a lot of similarities.

As a rental, I have no issue with Ferland.

But no way would I extend him to the money and term some foolish GM will toss his way this summer.

It's not!

But the problem is, as a rental, I bet the price is going to be pretty steep.

I'm really bad at player valuations so I won't attempt to put together a proposal. I think they could put together a deal for one of those guys, but I suspect after completing one, the price of the second would be tough for Sweeney to stomach

I agree. And would 1 of those moves suddenly put us on par with Tampa or Washington?

If not, I say wait til summer.

If Sweeney can pull this off, I'll be the President of his fan-club. He would essentially be killing two birds with-one(Mark:crossfing)stone. Adding size and experience to the left-side on the defense and a scoring winger.

I think adding Kreider wouldn't necessarily put them on par with Tampa, but their D is strong enough that I think they could compete with them. I don't know what it would take to match Washington. It feels like it's mental at this point. The B's heavily outplayed them last night and still couldn't get it done. Maybe they need to sacrifice an animal next time :dunno:

btw, if Panarin is available the Bruins should be all over it. I think he would be the perfect fit for Krejci and Debrusk. Panarin is an amazing passer and Debrusk is shoot first, look for the net kind of guy.

And Kreider is another one. If he is available Don needs to pound on that.

Yup, but that's an issue with any significant rental player whose contract is up and is a UFA.

The price Boston paid last year for Nash was impacted by theirs and other teams interest in re-signing him. If Boston knew with 100% certainty that Nash was one-and-done here and they had zero interest in extending him, I don't think they pay that price and some other team who would have some interest in extending him would beat their offer.

It's funny, back in the day (pre-cap) I would be upset at the Bruins for letting good UFAs walk.

Now in a salary cap system, I see letting good UFAs go as the nature of the beast. Even if those good UFAs were acquired at the deadline for a significant price.

I don't think Kreider alone gets us close enough. Especially if Tampa, Toronto or Washington makes a deadline deal of their own.

I'm intrigued with the progression of our 3rd line with Heinen-JFK-Donato, but keeping that line together for the playoffs this year is a recipe for disaster. Part of me wants to let them take their lumps and grow from the experience, but that's not going to end well if a Cup Run in 2019 is the goal.

Agreed, which is why I don't think the Bruins should be pursuing a rental. It's a waste of assets for an org that's not quite there yet and has some really tough competition to contend with.

And yes, pre-cap, you extend everyone you can afford to and let the owner worry about paying for declining guys. I feel like fans still operate on the pre-cap mentality of player acquisition and retention so it leads to these really insane proposals like acquiring and extending Wayne Simmonds or trading for Lucic.

That's it. As there appears likely that there will be more sellers than usual, but other than Toronto I don't see Tampa or Washington making any significant adds. The Leafs know they need to shore up that defense, so i could see them adding a nice piece.
If the bruins were ever able to add a Kreider, I'd like their chances, but I also wouldn't mind them getting a little more size and nastiness on the defensive left-side.

Yup, you can't keep them all. Heck if you draft and develop really well, you can't even keep all your RFAs let alone UFAs.

I'll say this, this year's deadline is shaping up to be quite interesting. So many team look to be out of it already, almost the polar opposite of last year. Will the supply being up lower prices on rentals?

Personally I think the Bruins have the assets to take a solid stab at a rental player, but if they can't find the right guy for the right deal, I'm also cool with running with what they have. Because even though it's a flawed forward group, ever team near the top of the standings (save Tampa) I see a flaw that may impact their chances of success.

Bruins seem too be having a lot of interest in the Kings players:

Could Sweeney be talking to them on a Multi-player deal? I'm not a big fan on acquiring Carter (age and length of contract) but a package which included Toffoli and Muzzin, I would be on board with.

I don`t want Carter, now Toffoli and Muzzin would be interesting
