If the Wings take Perfetti at four (not an unreasonable pick IMO), I think our best option at five is either Raymond or Drysdale. I wouldn't discount Raymond, as he addresses a huge organizational need - our depth on right hand shooting wingers is brutally thin right now.

I definitely do not want Askarov - taking a goalie in the top five is a massive gamble, especially at a time when we have so many other needs. (Oh, and goalies are voodoo, so there's that also.) We can always go get a goalie via trade or free agency if it turns out we need one in a couple of years - right now the first order of business is to find guys who can generate offense. I don't think that DJ Smith and his staff get nearly enough credit for keeping our team competitive most nights this year with a lineup as thin as he had. Take a good hard look at our roster vs. the Red Wings - I'd argue that they had significantly more talent up front. We had the weakest roster in the NHL for scoring, and second place wasn't particularly close. We need offensive skill right now - period, full stop.
This is your best post ever. Mostly because it’s exactly what I think lol

Id say the biggest swing for the fences pick would be Askarov at 5 as he carries by far the most risk. Second would be Perfetti followed by Raymond. Perfetti sure has alot of high end skill but his skating, size and strength is also a concern. I have heard quite a few scouts are worried about Raymonds game translating to North America. If Drysdale is gone at 5 I hope they take him personally but I just get a feeling the sens arent very high on him.

I think the safest picks at 5 in order in my opinion would be Drysdale, Rossi, Quinn, Holtz as options of players in that range.

I honestly dont see Yzerman taking Perfetti, too much Jonathan Drouin in him and im sure passing on Jones for Drouin must be in the back of his mind. I would be suprised if they dont take Drysdale.
If I was picking for Dorion at 5 it would be Raymond and if Detroit took Raymond I would take Drysdale

Jack Quinn as well has a huge Scott Glennie vibe to me. Playing with an elite C (top 5 pick) on a stacked team his scouting report is overrated IMo. I’d avoid picking him just because I think his stats are mad padded by playing on a PP with Rossi and on an elite team.
Mitchell Hoelscher was Quinn’s centre.

@bert you watch a ton of 67s games as well. I though Tolnai finally started to show something late in this season. I wouldn’t mind using a late pick on him based on his last few weeks. What’s your take on him.

Do you mean Rossi? So now he's an elite C when you want to put Quinn down. And it shows how much you clued in on the 67's . Rossi was not Quinn's C. They played on different lines.

So I will just ignore all your Rossi, Quinn comments. Carry on

Who do you take if raymond goes 4th? Drysdale perfetti rossi and even holtz is tough to pick from
It's not that a tough pick for me because I'd jump at the chance to take Drysdale but I wouldn't be all that upset if we were to take anyone of the three other guys you listed and in the same order. I'd want a dman with our third pick if we did that though.

Admittedly I don't watch junior games like i did in the 90s but there's a flip side to that issue....who did the opponent key on to shut down? If that's generally Rossi's line, then Quinn is mostly playing against 2nd pair D, none of whom are that likely to be future NHLers

Isn't Rossi kind of the Bergeron of the draft? Highly competitive, great skill, not flashy, highly intelligent.

Get points( A lot ) while also playing a shutdown role. 1PP, 1st PK. Very good at faceoff.

It's a shame he isn't 2 or 3 inches taller, there would probably be no question.

I think there is merit to what you are saying about Quinn playing against second pairing D as Rossi's line was always the first line.

I can say though I attended a game when London was in town (last season) and Quinn beat Boqvist one on one and scored a really nice goal. I remember asking myself "who is this guy?" and as I attended more games over the last two seasons I always found myself very impressed with Quinn. His rise is well deserved.

My example is anecdotal because it is only one instance, but he sure looked good as seventeen year old beating a Dman that was drafted in the top 10 the year earlier.

Tolnai had a nice push at the end of the year, his teammates and coaches refer to him as 'the professor' good frame and a high hockey IQ. Id use a late pick on him, he is a player that could really break out next year in an elevated role.

I think they actually expected more out of him this season but he did come along late just like you mentioned.

If he hadn't i likely wouldnt have considered it as he didnt show much. He also got Graham Clarke bask from injury on his line and that really helped.

Shockingly Hoelscher wasnt signed by New Jersey id use a late pick on him. It will be interesting to see if either get drafted and who would go first. Belanger and Cranley could also get picked. The 67s could have 5 players drafted this year.

At the start if the year it was Rossi's line in the back half id say it flip flopped. Quinn was unstoppable in the second half, from what I saw towards the end teams would put their more physical players on against Quinns line. Typically the 67's would try and dictate because they had the two first lines. I noticed the Holescher Quinn line would often be put in a power on power matchup vs the other teams top lines. Hoelscher and Quinn were the top PK unit as well.

Lundell is more in the Bergeron mold imo. I kinda like the Marchand comparison without the agitation

Agreed! I actually think Rossi has an edge similar to Marchand. Not to the same level but has some of the same characteristics in competing and a bit of a mean streak. I dont think he has Marchands skating or speed. The best comparable for Rossi I can think of would be Giroux's skillset and skating with Marchands build. Or a smaller Logan Couture. I dont see Bergeron in Rossi, Bergeron has an elite shot and plays a way heavier game.

I also find the Marchand comparison to be quite accurate.

But eh, apparently 5'9 players can't compete against NHL-sized opposition.
I mean as a centerman playing 82 games in the NHL I have my doubts, he has been hurt two seasons in a row for the 67's. To not atleast ask the question about him wearing down would be pretty irresponsible and not doing your due dilligence.

I don’t understand how people are so confident when the evidence shows there are so few success stories of centres his size. He’s a top 10 pick without question but I don’t get the vibes that he’ll become a 1C. I just can’t.

I mean its possible, I think he could have a similar usage as Giroux where he may play the wing as the season goes along to make sure he doesnt wear out come playoff time. It may be a matchup thing for him depending on who they play against. I think he is a top 10 pick too but I am worried he will be able to stay healthy and play and compete the way he does.

There are also very few success stories that are 6'6, but nobody every uses that as evidence that somebody who is 6'6 is unlikely to be effective at the NHL level.

How many guys Rossi's size were ranked in the top 10 of their draft? How many unsucceaful guys put up 120 pts in their draft year?

its true at one point people thought Chara was to tall to be effective and big players had the myth that they couldn’t skate well to be effective - Pronger suffered from this in his draft year.

but smaller players have always done well in the NHL, better then giants have. Fleury, Naslund, Dt Louis, Marchand - even EK was considered small when we took him and he revolutionzed how D are scouted and drafted.

I guess it come down to how you build your team. Some people don’t mind the Montreal Canadiens style of just keep taking small players and going nowhere with them. Others believe the sum of a big hard team is greater then it’s parts and certainly the evidence shows big teams, strong team win Cups (LA, St Louis, Washington, Chicago, Boston). Each of those teams had a Kane, Marchand that was smaller - but their Top centers were all big And could matchup with anyone

Rossi was always a 1 & 5 debate for me, as in Laf + a centre, with the premise that Byfield and Stutzle end up picked 2nd and 3rd.

With one of Byfield and Stutzle set to be the franchise's number 1 centre prospects, at number 5 (in order of preference):

  • Raymond - Best forward available / Elite potential
  • Rossi - Best centre available / 1C potential / Two-way
  • Drysdale - Best defenceman available / Elite potential?

Perfetti, Sanderson, Holtz, Quinn, Lundell, and Askarov are in my remaining top-12. Depending on who is still left at #11 or #12, I can see Dorion making a pitch if NYI 1st is in the mid teens to move up.
