Man it must be your time of the month.

I have a difference of opinion in that after multiple crappy coaches, this team despite having the same captain, seems to have a leadership problem. In the normal world, where we aren't hindered by rose colored glasses for specific athletes, it's a pretty natural concern to have. Ask any boss who they look to next if they fire the leadership and still don't get results.

I’m going to highly disagree, but I’m not going to rip you apart for it. The players are definitely having some confidence issues but I don’t think it’s leadership.

Question: why does it seem Simmer is lazy or has he given up? Or is he worn out or hurt? All the above?

Probably a variety of things.

One observation. To me, Simmonds seems like someone who knows he's on the way out, and whether consciously or subconsciously, already has one foot out the door. You can see it in the lockeroom interviews, and in some of the other off-the ice videos. The time he was awarded the POG helmet, and didn't really show all that much interest in wearing it or taking part in that, and basically threw it off his head immediately, for example. It's kind of a self-defense mechanism, to avoid continuing to build a bond that clearly won't be there past February.
Obviously he has incentive to play well, because it's a contract year, but he just doesn't seem to be showing any passion anymore or willing to get physically engaged- which itself is probably best explained by the off season surgery and physically just not being well right now. Also can't overlook the fact that he's been in his share of fights, a few of which he ended up on the wrong side (never for lack of spirit). That takes a toll on you mentally, and god knows how many times the guy has suffered a head injury. Do hope he's doing well in that regard.

He had core surgery in the offseason and he's not fully recovered from it.

I think you are probably right but other take..

Do you think he’s pissed off about not getting signed last off-season and now Hextall is gone so his job seems more in jeopardy? All while playing his good years on a cheaper contract.

I think Simmonds is overrated by the media, but playing without a center hasn't helped either.
Though he doesn't look as dangerous around the net as in years past.

Re Simmonds:

Whether due to lingering effects of surgery or just the wear and tear of 10 years of pro hockey, he’s clearly lost a step. He’s never had much hockey sense when it comes to making smart plays with the puck on his stick, nor is he even playing with the drive and physical edge he’s shown in years past. At this point, if he’s not scoring on the pp he’s basically Dale Weise.

It’s time to move on. You can’t look at it emotionally or focus on what he’s done in the past. The NHL is a business, and the smart business move is to trade Wayne Simmonds.

I can't imagine he'd play poorly in his contract year because he's upset.
