Question: why does it seem Simmer is lazy or has he given up? Or is he worn out or hurt? All the above?
Probably a variety of things.
One observation. To me, Simmonds seems like someone who knows he's on the way out, and whether consciously or subconsciously, already has one foot out the door. You can see it in the lockeroom interviews, and in some of the other off-the ice videos. The time he was awarded the POG helmet, and didn't really show all that much interest in wearing it or taking part in that, and basically threw it off his head immediately, for example. It's kind of a self-defense mechanism, to avoid continuing to build a bond that clearly won't be there past February.
Obviously he has incentive to play well, because it's a contract year, but he just doesn't seem to be showing any passion anymore or willing to get physically engaged- which itself is probably best explained by the off season surgery and physically just not being well right now. Also can't overlook the fact that he's been in his share of fights, a few of which he ended up on the wrong side (never for lack of spirit). That takes a toll on you mentally, and god knows how many times the guy has suffered a head injury. Do hope he's doing well in that regard.
