Wow, those temperatures from last night are crazy. I didn’t go out so I didn’t realize how cold it actually was but just from looking out the window and seeing what the air was doing to chimney smoke I knew it was bad.

Frozen pipes suck.

I remember visiting Alberta as a kid in the summer. I LOVED that the water out of the tap was like ice water. Here we need to put water in the fridge if we want cold water except in the coldest parts of the "winter". Where would you be trying to heat the pipes? In the basement? Outside? I have heard that they bury the pipes deep there to try and prevent them from freezing.

The first couple feet or so of pipe that comes out from the floor in the basement. I think the actual freeze is in the concrete or ground though.

Ya below the "frost-line" and you're supposed to be protected.

Ya below the "frost-line" and you're supposed to be protected.

This doesn't help you at all now, but in such temps you want to keep the taps dripping overnight, or really when its this cold all day, all the time. That cures a lot of pipe freezing until somebody in the family comes along and tightens the tap...

We have a kitchen sink that is incorrectly installed. Pipes run right over the edge of concrete poured basement. The concrete of course not helping at all. Tried heating wire, heating tape, insulation, everything. Its also located under a bay window so the fix is hard, and involves quite a lot that I don't really want to have to do.

A few nights a year we end up having to use a hair dryer to thaw the pipes. At least that always works and I don't have to use heat guns, yikes.

Fortunately the pipe has never burst. Just freezes slightly. When we're on vacay in winter we have to turn the water off and drain lines. Bit of a headache.

The worst though is having the drain frozen solid...gotta say.
