The Florida Marlins averaged 15,000 viewers per game in 2018. The Miami area doesn't watch a lot of sports typically compared to other markets. You would think baseball would do better. You have to take that into consideration for the Panthers. The Bruins and Red Sox might be around 125,000 local viewers each per game in Boston.

These aren't the type of ratings that brings in big money.

TV Ratings have been in decline since 2010 for all teams sports and even the ike UFC & WWE. Also, it was kinda a dumb move not to take a short contract with ESPN after the 04-05 lockout season. NHL really screwed the pooch by giving rights to NBC for basically FREE to NBC before negotiating with ESPN. It was a lot of stupidity on the league's side to think ESPN would renew at the price or more they were paying when they made their package worthless about a year before.

Not being on ESPN was a massive hit when considering casual fans or trying to build a new fanbase. NBC was good but they are not ESPN for sports. NBCSN was a failure they could not lure away any of the other 3 sports from ESPN/TNT/TBS. No wonder they are shutting it down.

Let’s think this through. If being on ESPN was so great for the league, why did their ratings, prestige, and relevance sink to all-time lows during the last ABC/ESPN deal?

The NHL sank so low that they got kicked off ABC entirely, and ESPN made a lowball offer for games to air exclusively on ESPN2. Things got so bad they were willing to torch an entire season because they had nothing to lose.

The mistake was leaving FOX for ESPN in the first place. FOX and NBC are the best US TV partners the NHL has ever had. ABC/ESPN, the worst. For the league’s sake, I hope this time is different.

Ok, a couple things here. First going back to ‘04 the league did not give the rights away to NBC first and then go to ESPN. I believe it was done the opposite way. ESPN had an opt-clause for after 2005 which they exercised.

Second, I also wouldn’t call NBCSN a failure and I wouldn’t say they have failed to lure other major sports properties. I would consider NASCAR a major sports property which they landed a few years ago. Ratings wise NBCSN has finished ahead of both ESPN2 and FS1 in viewers. It is being sunshined because the NHL just sold off a bulk of their spring and weeknight content to someone else making a merger with USA more sensible overall.

yup...

you have to think that way once NASCAR elected to do their contracts separately, not as a bundle.....NBC Sports has had an on and off relationship with NASCAR, AS well as the NHL, just as Disney has since it merged with ABC/ESPN.... posters seem to forget NBC and NBCSN walked away from NASCAR around the last contract renewal process in 2007 (which doesn't expire or come up for renewal until 2024).

this is why Fox has sole control of the Cup/XFINITY broadcasts since they acquired the contract back in 2000, for the 1st half of the NASCAR Season and full control of the Camping World Truck Series, since that tour's inception, no matter whom the 2nd partner was, whether it was the 6 race bridge to Turner, then ABC/ESPN, or NBC/NBCSN.

Indycar, the NHRA, as well as F1 face the same challenges, which led to the decision that there's not a dedicated motorsports Network in North America... which SPEED had filled until the decision by Fox to morph that into a competitor to ESPN...NBCSN claims that they're that "motorsports" hub, but that's gone as soon as the end of this season.

no one knows yet where Indycar/IMSA will land past 2021 once the decision to shutter NBCSN was first rumored, then confirmed....

NHRA was on ESPN, and now is on Fox/FS1.... F1 was shuttled to Disney/ESPN through Sky (FOX UK).

Does it really matter if NBC walked away from Nascar in 2007 if they came right back for the very next contract

Also F1 wasnt shuttled to Disney through Sky. NBC and F1 disagreed on streaming rights, which is why they didnt re-up that contract.

So much misinformation in this thread, love it

wrong:

then why did ESPN walk from NASCAR AFTER NBC did the same thing..... who succeeded ESPN , then if it was mis information.... when NBC returned to the 2nd half of the existing contract

What am I wrong about? F1 has a centrally controlled streaming platform, F1TV. NBC wanted to stream using NBC Gold (which is now peacock) but F1 wouldnt allow it. Which is why NBC didnt reup. ESPN broadcasts F1 and doesnt pay a rights fee to do so, using the world feed, which is produced by Sky Sports

Can you rephrase your question in legible english so I can actually answer?

how do you know what's in the mind of NASCAR, THEN?

Fox UK AKA Sky is the rights holder to F1 ESPN.... that's why Fox let the deal go from FS1 WHILE NBC got the rights to the exclusive Indycar contract.... how exactly do you claim the Indianapolis 500 switches from ABC to NBC

You didnt answer my F1 question, you changed the subject to Indycar and Nascar. What was I wrong about?

what network shares NASCAR/Indycar, nevermind IMSA......NBC/NBCSN

F1 left FOX/FS1 the same way the NHRA left ESPN why is the NHRA contract now being advertised on Fox.

the only motorsport property Disney has is F1

F1 left FOX before Fs1 was even a thing. They signed a contract with NBC in October of 2012 for the 2013 season.

And again, what was I wrong about in my original post?

funny, the league just signed a contract with ESPN for only partial rights worth twice as much as the last contract, which was all inclusive.

And yet, we still have posts like these
In a way, adding Vegas and Seattle should have helped a bit anyway, right? Though Vegas is a very, very small tv market but has nonetheless garnered strong local and usually big event NHL ratings, even if not playing or even before getting a team.

And who knows how much the loss
of Atlanta, years later now, damaged chances for an even better contract? Hmmm...likely little impact, as Atlanta is more important to the other sports.

And would losing Phoenix or adding Houston at this point have really made a difference? Who knows, right?
But after all, Atlanta is a higher tv market than Seattle and way higher than Vegas (but not necessarily would have more eyeballs per capita watching a local team than Seattle and Vegas).

And there's only so much the NHL can command in an American tv contract when it has seven Canadian markets, unlike the other sports with just Toronto or no Canadian NFL teams.
