Toronto
Well, i live in MTL and to be honest with u, basketball is so UNPOPULAR here. this is NOT toronto. we dont really care about the raptors at all. The ratings here are so bad. i don't even know anyone that sits and watches raptors game. L'antichambre, a show that has a french panel talking habs is way more popular than a raptors game. That's why Raptors aren't even on RDS. they are on RDS2 and RDS info. the equivalent of ESPN news in the US. We don't care about raptors here. Nothing personal, it's just that MTL is a HORRIBLE basketball town. no one talks basketball ever. i've nevr heard anyone in public talk Raptors. If MTL got an NBA team, they wouldn't last 3 yrs. They'd be playing in front of 6,000 fans at the Bell center each game. and if they're a bad team, it might be 1,200 fans. The Quebecois here HATE basketball for some reason, but they do love their hockey. however Although, they will watch if they get deep in the playoffs, unless there's a habs game on the same time.

To be honest if Montreal ever got a basketball team it would last just because the NBA is a juggernaut when it comes to apparal and TV money. Even if 5000 people showed up. Also, my cousin in montreal said it was nuts there when the Raptors were in the finals viewing parties everywhere. Montreal really isn't a sports town not progressive in this aspect at all .. still can't believe they let the expos go for absolotely nothing.

Also Raptors are in the top 10 of most valuable NBA teams.

NBA Team Values 2021: Knicks Keep Top Spot At $5 Billion, While Warriors Seize No. 2 From Lakers

A lot of hockey fans do not want to credit the inroads that the NBA has made in Canada. As generations grow, especially in the GTA, it will only get bigger. I Am seeing it right now kids are playing basketball everywhere. I don't see immigrants gravitating towards hockey like a few decades ago when Basketball is just easier to consume and play. Especially since the NBA is a real global powerhouse already.

Am I reading that right that NC State-Duke basketball had less than half the viewers of Washington-Pittsburgh played Saturday afternoon?

I'd love to believe that's true but I'm skeptical.

Not too hard to believe the NHL game was on OTA the College Basketball game was on cable. I understand skepticism, but believe it or not College Basketball more and more draws smaller numbers on cable more and more as the years go by. The bigger numbers come from the regular season OTA games on CBS and FOX and of course the March Madness tournament but the numbers aren't what they used to be at all.

The Bruins Flyers game feels like a miss for the league. That was to be a ratings winner for the league and NBC. 1 million viewers on NBCSN is very good. However NBC generally attracts about 3 times the viewership then NBCSN. That would put the game at 3 million plus on network television. I know things happen and you can't control the weather. It is too bad there wasn't an existing backup plan to move the game to NBC Sunday night. A few years ago the Winter Classic for the Penguins/Capitals was moved from the afternoon to Prime Time on NBC because of the weather and they had 4.5 million viewers.

I think Sunday night is much more coveted to a network than a Saturday night. Saturdays are usually the least watched? Thus no willingness to accommodate the NHL.

Isn't Sunday usually the most- viewed night traditionally for networks' regular fare?

Seems NBC didn't think/trust hockey to top their regular slate of shows that night?

These outdoor games should always be prime time, I get NHL loving the scenic view of the afternoon, but the potential bigger audience as well as no sun is a no brainer imo.

Thanks. I do realize that. I am sure they did the best they could. I think the League and NBC has done a good job overall. My point is it is to bad the main event of the regular season was not on network TV. Even if the Flyers Bruins game was scheduled on a Saturday so it could be moved to NBC at night if need be if Sunday was more difficult. The NHL and NBC has done that before by moving the time.
