Not sure about the other cities, but I suspect this also to be true all across North America:

The early ratings boost is a really good sign for the league.

And this is with a 5:30 EST start

I know that networks love 8 or 830 starts (see: NFL) because it can bring in all the timezones. I'm curious if this year will prove that it's best to increase your Eastern audience with earlier start times which would essentially replace the PST/MST zones. I never would've watching the PHI/PITT game if it was at 8.

Not sure how much the NHL is going to get in their next US TV deal definitely more than their previous but I am thinking the closest benchmark would be the WWE TV deals. However, their rating are generally higher.

Not sure how you can use WWE as a comparable. It comparing apples to oranges.

WWE is produces all of its programming itself and covers the costs. It doesn’t operate like a traditional operation (because it isn’t).

WAS/PITT had 1,7M viewers. Do we know why did game earn so many viewers?
Sunday game vs normal Saturday game had to help. As well as the opener on NBC tends have the highest viewed game of the year of the non stadium series or Winter Classic games.

I think what happened last season was that it happened during Covid and in an election year, which is why majority of the cable news stations were reporting increased levels of over a million. Since Covid is becoming part of normal life and the election is finally ending I wonder if those people who jumped to the news are getting bored and coming back to sports?

The 1.7 million viewers for the Washington/Pittsburgh game beat all 25 NBA and college basketball televised games in viewership for the week. Only 2 college games were on network television and the rest on cable. Still a very strong start for the NHL.

That's great but to be fair there were no OTA NBA games to make a apples to apples comparison comparing a NHL game on NBC that got 1.7 mil vs NBA games on ESPN and TNT getting 1.3-1.5mil isn't the same as comparing NHL on NBC vs NBA on ABC. That said the opening night game matched pretty well on cable vs NBA on cable. Hopefully we see that trend continue as the season goes on. That 1.7m number is winter classic type.

That said I fully expect this year to be a ratings average high past what we've seen the past four or five years because of the reduced schedule of 54 vs 81 games. mathematically will boost the average and the ratings getting off to a good start this season will only boost that.

Oh we might have got ahead of ourselves with the numbers surging I know I did. Surprised at the Vegas number and the Red Wings number it was a Holiday most folks were off. Maybe when you add the local ratings for the lower rated two, that would've added another 60k to viewership to both games.

NBC has told distributors and some sports leagues that it plans to shut down its NBCSN sports channel by the end of the year. NBC’s most recent affiliate deals with Charter and Dish Network do not include carriage for NBCSN beyond this year, sources said. Plus, sports leagues that have deals with NBC were being told of the changes this week.
