Saw this from Nielsen Sports posted online a few days ago. Thought it was pretty cool looking in showing the biggest markets that might make expansion targets for leagues in the future. SMH Atlanta:shakehead

NHL needs a team in Houston. Unfortunatetly Atlanta is failed twice. Also they could look markets like Kansas city or Portland...

Atlanta is definitely getting another shot in next 20-30 years, it’s too big of a market in the South for the NHL not to go there. Once there is stable ownership with a ironclad arena lease is available they will get a team whether that’s through expansion or relocation.

Is this poor tv viewership for hockey down south something we didn’t all already know? Hockey in the US is like basketball up here; it’s a fringe sport. Or maybe hockey in the US is like soccer? Hockey is king in Canada, and some Euro countries - like Finland.

Agreed...my only gripe because I look at the whole picture is I just wish that the 18-49yr Demos were higher, specifically the 12-34yr old data set. Need younger fans especially teens watching they will be the future and care takers of this league in the long term and not too distant future. Note the demos for live sports with anything over 550k. You should be easily breaking into that .20 range(18-49) Demo.

Note how the NHL even beats the NBA in the 50+ demo. It's just crazy what happened between the last 25+yrs ago with that 50-55yr old guy who was then a young 25-30yr old in the 90s, that grew up being die hard fans. Now look at that same age group and younger now. Those then 25-30 old guys are still watching just as much in there 50s. That difference in youth engagement from 25 yrs ago in the 90's to now is the soft underbelly. That's the battle for the next commish.

LOL... Basketball is definitely not a fringe sport in the Greater Toronto Area... especially with young kids and people 18-34, immigrants etc. Not sure about the rest of Canada but I don't think the sport of Basketball is "Fringe" at all for example in different levels of school it's something Canadians have been playing for generations. You can say that the NBA may be "fringe" which I don't agree with. As for the states? I have lived there for a little while and the NBA is much bigger in Canada than Hockey is down south. You don't even get hockey highlights on ESPN in the states but TSN's sportscentre covers NBA. NHL demographic is defintely aging with the "50 plus crowd." Many make comments like Basketball is fringe... which is definitely out of touch like the NHL's in game entertainment choices (see...Bon Jovi and 80s rock songs).

How could you forget? Toronto is Canada especially for sports considering all anyone has outside of here is the NHL. CFL does not count, neither does lacrosse, curling or whatever fringe sports Canadians think are big time.

Well, i live in MTL and to be honest with u, basketball is so UNPOPULAR here. this is NOT toronto. we dont really care about the raptors at all. The ratings here are so bad. i don't even know anyone that sits and watches raptors game. L'antichambre, a show that has a french panel talking habs is way more popular than a raptors game. That's why Raptors aren't even on RDS. they are on RDS2 and RDS info. the equivalent of ESPN news in the US. We don't care about raptors here. Nothing personal, it's just that MTL is a HORRIBLE basketball town. no one talks basketball ever. i've nevr heard anyone in public talk Raptors. If MTL got an NBA team, they wouldn't last 3 yrs. They'd be playing in front of 6,000 fans at the Bell center each game. and if they're a bad team, it might be 1,200 fans. The Quebecois here HATE basketball for some reason, but they do love their hockey. however Although, they will watch if they get deep in the playoffs, unless there's a habs game on the same time.

Off topic...

I'm not a huge MLB fan, but isn't there rumours swirling about a return of the Expos?
