I speak the truth.:) Had black and white TV, one channel, and Hockey Night in Canada. That was all we had and were happy.
Same, except color, and then when I was in University we got the St. John's Maple Leafs. I am happy I grew up long before the internet and social media.

Wednesday games were joined in progress after the local news in the 60's. Our first color TV was in 69.
I remember getting color TV, upgraded to three channels, and seeing "little Joe" Cartwright having a green jacket. The world was a much better place before social media that's for sure. I think the NHL is bigger in Canada than the NFL is in the USA. It was a family event watching HNIC.

OEL SPEAKS:

His comments on that last part irk me a little in this way:

It doesn't matter one little itsy bitsy bit if your group is "tight-knit" if you guys go out there and crap your pants on the ice and embarrass yourselves, the team, the fans, and the whole freaking state. I don't wanna hear about how great the locker room is when that's the result of it. Do freaking better and don't be an embarrassment to hockey.

Obviously, that "playoff" performance still disgusts me. Hopefully things will be better.

Tommy Hunter. Haven't heard that name in years. Man are we old. Can't forget about Bonanza on Sunday night, and the Ed Sullivan show. Heard yesterday that Joey Moss passed away. TGO meet Joey when he was dating his sister Vickey Moss and they became close friends. TGO also got Joey a job with the Oilers that turned into a life long career.

I read many Joey stories yesterday. Really worth googling a few.

OEL needs a strong leadership group to support him. What he has is the Goober Patrol, Bud Light Gang, Hakuna Matata Crew.

Numminen took over for Tkachuk who was a push you up against a wall and choke you leader. He had Doan for support along with Langkow and seasoned vets like Lemieux, Buchburger, and Brad May among others. It was a pretty grizzled team for Numminen’s tenure as Captain.

OEL has had the country club. Tocchet giving Phil a pass, and Goligoski going on Chiclets to talk about how Stepan taught him about Chillaxing and taking it easy with the six pack of Bud Lights every night. Demers who talks about training camp as a waste of time and wishing there were no pre-season. And Keller and Schmaltz afraid of their own shadows.

I think OEL can be a fine centerpiece for the team. And a passable captain. But Bill Armstrong has to get rid of these coaches and bring in some bonafide leaders to help him.

Because I have young kids and Disney has poisoned my mind, and this is just the season my life is in right now, I’m really obsessing with the Lion King analogy for OEL.

Haha. Doan is Muffassa, Chayka is Scar, and Stepan/Goligoski/Kessel/Demers are Timon and Pumba. Chayka killed Doan and left our Prince Simba to be raised by soft bitches who taught him to chill and take it easy and forget about being a Lion.

This is one hell of an “off-season” take. Lol. Season ain’t starting until February and I’m already making Coyotes vs Lion King analogies. It’s going to be an ugly few months boys. Apologies in advance.

Definitely. He's not been done any favors by bringing in a bunch of the same type of those guys to be the leadership group with him while simultaneously jettisoning any of the guys who had piss and vinegar for breakfast (or even a small amount of chip on the shoulder). Hammer isn't a bad support member, but when they add all the other crap it just isn't enough.

GMBA did mention at some point in one interview about how the analytics only approach leads to vanilla teams. He takes the locker room and personality into consideration (or so he says). So, I can only hope he sees the issues that appear to be present with this group and actually does something about it. He at least signed some players in FA that don't mind getting physical so maybe that's the slow start in the right direction.

But I think that the biggest thing that still remains to be done (and idk if it is even possible to be done this season or soon) is to cut out the cancers that make up that group (of course Tocchet included).

One or MAYBE 2 of those guys may be ok... but it's killing this team to have them all and to have them be the leadership group. If 1 or 2 were just following the leader and keeping the room loose, then that may work out a lot better.

If you think there will be significant endorsements from a "Meruelo" owned company i think you are delusional. The Cap will not be circumvented that way under Uncle Gary's watch.
Au contraire! Meruelo makes A. Matthews the face of several of his businesses in the guise of marketing hockey in the desert. Matthews - is seen promoting casinos, pizzerias and sushi. The summer Matthews becomes a UFA, the Coyotes offer him a 7 year max money contract. Uncle Gary slaps a damning penalty on the franchise for tampering. They lose the equivalent of a max offer sheet. 4 first round picks. Hocjey the hard way. Coyotes hockey.

Haha its great though. They make OEL lesser than what he COULD be.

He needs someone to tell him "Remember... who you are"

Going back to run the pack and take out the evil lion ain't easy and it's not meant to be. It could kill you, but if you want to realize your potential you have to fight those battles and confront the villains.

Yeah I think every team needs at least one goofball type to keep things light. You can have a couple as long as they’re counterbalanced by serious leadership types. But having your entire leadership group comprised of these guys is a disaster waiting to happen. It’s no wonder they were so “close-knit”, they’re all cut from the same cloth.

Reminds me of a clique in high school. The jokester group that never took anything seriously. It's easier that way when things don't work out for you because you are "too cool" to care about anything. Also makes it easier to make fun of the people who do actually try. Because nothin's better then cutting the tall piece of grass down so it's uniform with all the rest of the short growers.

We also didn't really make the playoffs. We were gifted a play-in round which we won. In any other year, we would have missed the playoffs.

I think we had 3 channels?

Anyway, I was a Habs fan as a wee lad. Became a Jets fan with the origin of the WHA and switched my NHL allegiance to the New York Islanders (my favourite player growing up was Bryan Trottier, though I played a lot more like Clarke Gilles ).:pb:

Once the Jets merged into the NHL I really only cheered for them.

I think one of the Timon and Pumba quartet is definitively Ed, the goofiest of the hyenas.

The Islanders were a hated team in Oiler land back in the day. Loved Clarke Gillis though.
