Thanks for the spade work on this Dax, always appreciated.

Can you imagine getting into the lottery mix this season and adding Byfield. Talk about propelling us right back up to contender level talent. That is the dream scenario for me if we miss the playoffs.

Can you imagine getting into the lottery mix this season and adding Byfield. Talk about propelling us right back up to contender level talent. That is the dream scenario for me if we miss the playoffs.

It would be huge to get lucky with the lottery for us. Based on the top 6 centers available in the top end of the first this is how I see it.

Byfield - Game changing franchise 1C potential. Great skating, size, good shot arsenal, great playmaking. Needs some work on the defensive side of the game but that comes with experience, with his size, speed and anticipation he could really have a great defensive game if coached in that direction. Also really needs to work on his pace of play and endurance. He seems to come out of the gate hard and fade later on in games. No one like him in the NHL currently.

Lundell - Top 6 two-way C potential. Lundell is among the smartest players in his draft class. He has insanely good anticipation to break up and keep plays going. Battles hard along the boards and doesn't give up on plays. Plays in all situations thanks to his great defensive game and seems to get things done in all 3 zones. His lack of flash may make his game seem boring but he is just an effective player who doesn't always wow you but can sometimes pull stuff out of nowhere. Similar style of game to Jonathan Toews, not overly flashy but has the IQ and skills that just work.

Stutzle - Top 6 offensive forward potential. Excellent skater, very crisp edgework, great acceleration and high end top speed might make him the among the best, if not the best skater, in the entire draft. Great stickhandler and a very quick and accurate release along with solid vision make him a complete offensive threat. Can also line up on the RW where he has more freedom to unleash his speed down the wing. Reminds me of Clayton Keller with the speed and skill combo and liklihood of being a winger at the NHL level.

Lappiere - Top 6 playmaking center. Lappiere has very high end vision and passing skills which are the hallmark of his game. In my books he is easily the best pure playmaker in the entire draft. He doesn't have as much to work with in Chicoutimi but when with a skilled shooter like Perfetti, we were able to see what he was capable of. An explosive skater who works hard along the boards and really excels off the rush, could stand to shoot the puck a lot more as he isn't a huge threat there but he does have a good shot. Could be the perfect center for a team of shooters like Laine, Connor and Ehlers. Has an underrated two-way game that seems to be getting better. He is a strong candidate to be available later on as his exposure will be quite limited this year. Plays a similar game to what Barzal did in junior, we'll see if he can become a decent scorer as well to take his game to the next level like Barzal did.

Perfetti - Top 6 goalscoring forward. Pefetti is an interesting case as he plays both C and W in Saginaw but myself and many others think his future in the NHL is a likely winger going forwards. His skating is easily the weakest part of his game but he is an incredibly smart player that excels in all areas of the offensive zone. Equally good at scoring and setting up plays but he has an incredibly powerful and accurate shooting arsenal that he can get off from pretty much anywhere on the ice, easily already an NHL calibre shot. Similar style of game to Jake Guentzel, an opportunistic finisher and playmaker who could really excel with the right center.

Zary - Physical two-way top 9 C. Zary is a monster on the forecheck where he comes in hard and heavy at anyone of any size. Plays a very strong defensive game and is always on the attack, whether he has the puck on his stick and is driving towards the net or battling and cycling along the boards or if he is chasing down players in any zone laying checks and working hard to get the puck back. His high compete level should be enticing for any team looking to make a playoff push. Where he fits in on a team is the hard part because he has the skills and drive to become a very useful top line player but so much depends on how he translates his game to the NHL. Could end up being more of a middle 6 two-way C but either way his floor seems to be that of an NHL center where he fits in will depend on how his game develops. Hard to think of a good comparable.

Pytlik - Top 6 power forward. Pytlik is a monster along the boards, competes hard in all zones and has a strong defensive game. Plays both center and wing. He plays a hard nosed physical puck protection game complemented with great skating and good offensive skills. Very similar style of player to Leon Draisaitl.

Rossi - Top 9 center with skill. Rossi has game breaking talent and is an equal opportunity scorer and playmaker. Loves to do work along the boards cycling the puck and waiting for his time to strike. Doesn't have ideal size for an NHL center but he is strong down low and works hard every shift. Sometimes pulls some insane skill plays out of nowhere. Also has a well developed two-way game that allows him to play all situations. Plays a similar style of game to Tyler Johnson.

Byfield is exactly what we need. Hopefully if we are out by the TDL we can move a few more pieces to contenders and grab their picks too and grab some lotto luck again

And D available? Looks like THAT is what the Jets need in the worst way :(

If we keep playing the way we are and don’t get any lotto luck we may fall in the Drysdale and Barron area 8-15. Guhle and Schneider are projected in the 20-30 range. All RHD with exception of Guhle. I don’t know much about any D in the US or overseas. Not much access to those games

Great summary. I liked Lapierre a lot better then Byfield at the Hilinka but that is a small sample size.

I probably need to see more of him but it looked like he relied a bit too heavily on his physical ability and I'm always a bit Leary of players who are overly reliant on that trait in junior. But like I said will need to watch him a lot more.

Dax what is your scouting report on Kaiden Guhle from PA who is #18 on your list?

Big physical kid, really strong with incredible four-way mobility which allows him to cover a lot of ice. His first steps and ability to close in on players while also keeping a solid gap make him among the better defensive defencemen in this class IMO. The way he defends is so seriously underrated in this draft and something that isn't always going to show up on the scoresheet. Make no mistake though the kid can play the offensive side of the puck too. Has a great first pass and loves to activate but chooses his opps wisely. His hands aren't amazing but he can skate very well with the puck and generates some solid puck rushing speed when looping around the zone. He is more of a passer than a shooter but his offence is limited by his creativity. He won't wow you in the OZ but he is effective at getting himself and the puck where he wants it to go and holds the line really well. Now that he has a much bigger role in PA it wouldn't surprise me to see him get 50-60 points this year. His physical game can lead him to get into trouble and he's often involved in post whistle activities but he can more than back himself up and will be a physical two-way force in the NHL IMO. There is some upside to be a solid 1st pairing defencemen but I see him filling a 2-4 role as a physical two-way dman. His closest comparable size and style wise is probably Alex Pietrangelo. He's the 3rd defencemen on my list and rising.

It should be noted that Lappiere got to play on the top line with the best players on the team in Perfetti and Sourdif. If Lappiere was with Byfield I have no doubts QB would have put up some insane numbers as well.

His physical ability is definitely a big part of his game but it's the combo of skating with his physical ability that makes him so insanely dangerous. The way he can shield the puck and while skating at top speed is probably something that no one in the NHL can do now, nor could the do in junior. This kid will get stronger as well and be a force in the NHL. Another year of OHL might not be horrible for him but he should be ready for a 3rd line role next year at this rate.

Dax or Joe quick question.

Why did Egor Zamula go un-drafted last year? I must be missing something how can an 18 year old 6'4" (170) D men that put up 56 points in 61 games in the Dub (for the Hitmen) not get picked up?

Based on what I saw he is a black hole in his own zone and I heard he doesnt speak English very well but not entirely sure on that. From what I saw of him the guy just doesnt care about playing defence.

Yea that sounds like Merkley and on top of that he was a complete idiot and he still got drafted. Either way though that does explain things better so thank you.

Yeah Merkley was on a number of do not draft lists. I'm guessing Zamula was on all of them.

In the short term, yes. But there is help on the way for D. Not so much at C.
Some GMs place a big premium on position in the 1st round. Chevy doesn't seem to be in that camp. He'll happily draft a LD or LW (the least valuable positions) if he thinks the talent is there.

I'm ready for the Jets to focus only on C in the 1st round.

I think it depends on where we end up drafting and who is available. I hope we get a C with #1 potential but concentrating on position is what got us Stanley when there were better options available, IMO. If there are several players, or even just 2 players who are close in value, take the C. Otherwise stick to BPA. I just don't trust Chevy to draft for position.

Im not sure I understand. After all, Chevy messed up on the Stanley pick, but, he's generally drafted pretty well. Isn't every pick bpa to that team and hasn't Chevy generally drafted well? I generally trust his drafting with the caveat that everyone messes up occasionally.
