Damn, you're really high on him what would be your top5/top10 D for the draft?
Well, for me Drysdale is the most offensively gifted defenseman in the draft, the one that should be the most productive offensively since his tools reminds me alot of Quinn Hughes and his shot might be even better... Kid has everthing to become a dominant PP quarterback... But a bit like Hughes, the defensive part of his game needs improvement, not saying he is bad at defending, but sometimes he will rush plays or take questionnable decisions that will cost the team defensively, he doesnt play a mistake free game like Sanderson or Schneider do. So it comes to what your team needs more... If you already have a good PP specialist, it might be smarter to opt for Sanderson, if you have none, I dont think Sanderson or Schneider can provide that type of offense, especially on the PP...
Personally, when it comes to defensemen, I tend to value the defensive part of the game pretty highly since thats your first and most important mission, you can be skilled all you want, if you take bad decisions under pressure, get outmuscled 1 on 1 or dont process the game well enough, you start with 2 strikes against you...
Best example in this draft is Wallinder, kid has great athletic tools, solid offensive potential, but has no clue how to defend... Poor gap control, poor positioning, doesnt read the play well and takes bad decisions, his lack of poise is concerning enough for me to downgrade his ranking signifiantly... Another good example is Jeremy Poirier, on skills alone, he should be a guarentee first rounder, but his IQ is so low that I have no faith he will amount to anything decent at the pro level... Im also biaised against small defensemen, they really need to be special to catch my attention since they concede alot in term of reach and physicality, its one thing to be dominant at the junior level, another to translate it at the Pro...
When you take a look at the NHL D-core structures, you have 1 or 2 under 6 feet defensemen per team max and some teams have none, the reason is simple, you just cant have 2 small defensemen paired togheter since they would be too easy to play against, If you can find me 1 succesful d pairing in the entire NHL that includes 2 guys under 6"0, good luck... To make a long story short, every years in each draft, you have ton of skilled undersized defensemen that never amount to anything since they dont generate enough offensively to make up for their small stature and defensive work... Big mobile defensemen like Sanderson and Schneider for example, will be extremmely hard to play against since they limit time and space to the opposing fowards, they can also move the puck, skate and contribute on transition the same way smaller players would do...
Thats a weak draft for defensemen and there are kids like O'Rourke that I havent see play, so it becomes hard to dress a rational list, but regardless, here are some of my favorites:
1-Sanderson\Drysdale
3-Schneider
4-Guhle
5-Jurmo
6-Seeley
7-Barron
