I find Leason an oddity on the draft boards. We often see guys in their +2 years have huge seasons, many who amount to very little. So what about Leason makes him worthy of a high pick?

And if your going to tell me he is a bad skater? Don't like that profile at all.

He's also 20 years old in the draft. He has made some improvements, but I think there are better fish in the ocean.

Would of been nice if you specified only Russians bud.

Elite Prospects - NHL Draft Center FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS TOP 31

:sarcasm:

What really stands out to me is just the lack of high end Russians overall. Podkolzin at 4, which I think is too high, the next guy at 26 and that is in the top 31.

I did that to show you how many there are among all of the NA skaters. There is a plethora. This draft could end up being Russian dominated a few years down the line.

I guess, but right now they are flying under the radar. I'm not seeing many impressive resumes on that list.

For sure they are just sleepers for now. If Afansyev is on the board at 34, we should take him. Other than that, I'm not going to go out of my way to grab one.

I doubt he will be the sexiest pick at #34, but it is worth noting that Leason is close to NHL-ready and a right-shooting winger in a draft which is extremely thin at that position. So, some team will certainly value him. I think he goes in the late first round and the Devils don't need to worry about it.

Just following the Russian path here.

But how bout Yegor Sokolov? Played for Cape Breton in the Q. In his +1 year, but he just turned 19, so he was a young kid in last years draft. Huge, at 6'4" 230. Right handed RW. 30-27-57 in 68 games. 2nd most goals on his team, 3rd most points. Last year, his first in NA he put up a respectable 21-21-42 in 64. Was a monster in the Russian U-17's the year before that.

Doesn't appear to be currently ranked by any of the major outlets. Have to assume he has cement in his skates.

Curious who in 2019 still doesnt carry NHL Network? Comcast, TimeWarner, DirecTV, FIOS I know all do.

I have Comcast but the TV package I'm signed up for does not include NHL Network.

And they don't allow you to subscribe right off the TV like Fios does. You have to actually CALL to make ANY changes.

Afanaseyev would certainly be a good pick at #34 in my estimation. His shot has elite potential, and his puck-possession skills are high-end -- when he's bulling down low with his 6'3-210 frame, he's truly a force to be reckoned with. He has good-but-not-great skating and vision. What Afanaseyev needs to work on is his defensive game, which can be described as flat-out bad. His play without the puck anywhere but in the offensive zone has called his hockey sense into question, which is why he will likely be available in the second round despite a tantalizing skill-set and frame.

The key with Afanaseyev is that he's projectable. He has grown two inches in the past year, and perhaps when he fills into form and gets a bit stronger he can gain a gear in his skating. During his development, if he rounds out his 200-foot game and plays with a bit more intensity -- well, combined with an uptick in skating, we're talking about a potential home run pick here. If Afanaseyev puts it all together, he certainly carries the upside of a top-line, goal-scoring stud. It is equally important to note, however, that he also carries some risk.

If he wasn't slightly risky, he would be in the top 15 easily. I agree, he could very well be a homerun at 34 if someone doesnt take him late in the first.

Sokolov is very strong on the puck and has a very good shot. His vision and puck skills are also plus tools. His skating is not awful, I'd say it's about average. What's below average is his hockey sense and 200-foot game -- he often looks lost without the puck, falling behind the play and then struggling to catch up with it.

I'd say Sokolov would be an interesting flyer to take in the 6th/7th rounds, but he does not seem like the type of player whom Ray Shero and Paul Castron have targeted in the past.

He carried that St. John's team. If he's around in the 3rd, he would be a very solid choice.
Heck, given how bad that team was I could certainly see even his best rankings underselling him a bit. I wouldn't use the high 2nd on him, but either of the other 2 I'd be OK with. If we could nab him in the 3rd I'd be pretty happy with that.

Thank you to those for sharing their respective takes on on Hoglander. My initial thought was solidified by the responses. We already have some skilled undersized LWs in Bratt and Boqvist which renders the player a bit redundant. My preference continues to be a D-man at 34 but if not, I hope the Devils select a forward who fits a different kind of profile than Hoglander.

McKenzie had him ranked at 90 lol. I hope thats the case because we should take him with a 3rd than lol.

I'd really like to nab Maxim Cajkovic.

I've been a big fan of Maxim Cajkovic for some time now -- I wrote him up awhile ago. He finished at #58 in my final rankings, but I may be underselling him due to the fact that he was often guilty of trying to do too much for a woeful Saint John squad in the QMJHL.

The right-shooting Slovakian winger is oozing with offensive tools -- he's a terrific skater with top-end straightaway speed, he has magic hands in tight and features an arsenal of shots. He has decent size at 5'11-185 and likes to lay out big hits on opposing defenders. His effort level is high, which is a positive, but may have led to his downfall down the draft ranks for a curious reason.

His team was so bad this year that Cajkovic was often guilty of trying to do too much himself and underutilizing his teammates. Is this a problem with his hockey sense, or is it a problem which could be alleviated by playing alongside greater talent? If you believe the latter, we're talking about a top-6 winger with big-time offensive upside in the NHL.

I'm going to go on the record as saying, despite my personal reservations, I would not take Cajkovic with the Devils #34 pick. However, were he available in the late 2nd/3rd rounds, he would certainly be a terrific pick for the Devils with any of their #55/60/70/80 picks. I'm a big fan of the kid, his talent and compete levels are just undeniable to me.

Only OK #'s, but the best offensive producer on what looks like a terrible Saint John's team.

I'm seeing him ranked anywhere between 48 and 113. Was a ppg for Slovakia at this years U-18's. But was 2 ppg at last years U-18.

5'11", 185. A right handed RW.

I'm intrigued.

I just wrote him up in the post above. I wrote him up months ago as well, I've been closely tracking Cajkovic all season long.

Tanner Pearson is probably the most recent comparable. Non-factor his first two draft years and then comes out of nowhere and ends up sneaking into the first round in 2012. Some teams might value the fact the Leason can turn pro right away, so he might be able to contribute later this season.

I'm pretty sure I wrote up Cajkovic for you guys too, so we may be missing a couple. Let me know if you want me to discuss any other prospects before the draft, I'd be happy to if I can find the time.

Any chance Bjornfot falls to NJ at an appropriate spot? I’ve been sitting on “does Bjorn fot in the woods?” for a while now and really want to roll that out.

Some guy on NHL Network last night who is supposedly a scout or reporter who follows draft prospects - he said some Swedish forward to be taken early 2nd round is the best skater in the draft

How does someone so dumb end up in such a position?

Pearson was interesting for a couple reasons.

1)An August b-day, so a very young for draft year kid.

but more importantly

2)Was playing in something called the GOJHL in his draft year. Did not arrive in the OHL until his +1 year, and had pretty solid stats (15-27-42 in 66 gp's) given it was his first year in the league. Then a very big year in his +2 going 37-54-91 in 60.

Leason is a late April b-day, so youngish for his draft class, but not that young. He was in the WHL for his draft season and put up a measly 8-10-18 in 68 for Tri City. It get's interesting the next season as he put up just 1 point in 12 games for Tri City before being traded to Prince Albert, where in 54 games he put up a 15-17-32 stat line. So a change of scenery, and most likely a change of oppurtunity, helped his game start to get going.
